Don't hesitate! Alex is a mechanic you can count on. He's honest, punctual, and does what he says he's going to do. We have hired him for two repairs so far. The first was to troubleshoot and fix our boat's steering mechanism that a previous mechanic failed to be able to do. And most recently (June 2, 2022) he did a full service on our Yamaha 225 (4 stroke) outboard engine. He did an oil & filter change, replaced our fuel/water separator & spark plugs. He also noticed that our starter was dragging, which had caused our batteries to fail while out on the water the week before. He called the supply house (on speaker phone) so we could hear the full conversation about the cost of the part. He does not "up-charge" for parts! He picked up the parts the next morning and completed the repair as he said he would. Alex recently worked on my Cobalt 302 - twin engine Penta V8s. He diagnosed the engine problem, ordered the parts, picked them up (together with a special tool required) and did the installation efficiently. He was very reliable - he arrived exactly when he said he would every time. The job could have been difficult but was quick and easy as he has years of experience. I should have trusted my instincts and not used him when he told me on the phone he primarily works for wealthy boat owners in Coral Gables. I guess those folks are less concerned about the cost of things. I am not going to offer a comment about Alejandro's ability as a mechanic, as my boat's engine's problem was simple: the battery to ignition cable was disconnected. Surprisingly, it took him 45 minutes to diagnose the problem. I think (but I might be wrong), a more astute mechanic would have first checked out the battery connections and would not have had to unnecessarily spend 45 minutes testing out the fuses. To his credit, he did spend an additional 15 minutes trouble shooting an electrical problem with the electronics panel which he was not able to resolve. He also spent an another 30 minutes ascertaining my engine was not overheating. My essential issue with him is that he never warned me the$200 he quoted me on the phone was just to diagnose the engine starting problem. So I was shocked by the additional $300 charge to resolve a loose battery cable issue. If in fact his intention was to just diagnose the problem for $200 and then charge me an additional $300 to fix it, he should have warned me. In addition, he did mot even affix the battery switch after dismounting it from the bulkhead and dropped the protective back cover into the bilge. Sloppy and unprofessional. First time Ive ever run into this kind of situation. And in addition, I had to suffer a lecture as to why I had no business changing the batteries in my boat as this is something best left to an experienced mechanic. Admittedly, I am not as sharp as I once was and failed to thoroughly check the battery connections before calling him. But evidently, neither is he. Nevertheless, the lecture was not only uncalled for but disrespectful. If you choose to hire him be sure to fully address what he will do for you for the price he's quoting you. That's my story. Alex of Santana Marine has successfully worked on two boat engines for me in the last two years. One boat was an outboard (115 HP) and the other is an inboard/outboard MerCruiser. He was able to diagnose the problems and make repairs that other mechanics could not. His prices are very reasonable and his obvious knowledge and skills is outstanding. Alex is also a very personable guy and speaks fluent Spanish and English. I originally found him via craigslist. I've only lived in south Florida for 5 years but it's been long enough to know that there are few service workers in any field that can do what they say. Alex does. I would not recommend this mechanic to anyone. He is unprofessional, abrasive, confrontational, and treats his customers poorly. Not only did he leave all of his trash and materials at the work site, but he also insisted that someone help clean it up for him. He also insisted that someone help him in trying to do the repairs. His work was observed to be sloppy, and I watched him try to cut corners. I would be very cautious when calling him for repairs, as he claims to be very knowledgeable about Mercury outboard motors, when he actually caused more damage to what was already done. And took no ownership. He offered no re assurance that he could finish the repairs himself. So-we had to find another mechanic that could actually get the job done, with a more positive attitude. read more
