The street parking nearby is free, and there are bike racks for anyone that needs them. The neighbors in that area were always very kind to me, but it's also important to be aware of their families and privacy. It's not a place for large group gatherings or non-residents to host events. There are water fountains, waste disposal, and lots of seating, but there are not picnic tables or public restrooms. It's a beautiful park and I always make it a stop on my walks!

This is a lovely park! There's two parking lots with adequate parking. As you enter the playground,…read morethere's a Mr. Potato Head ready to greet you. The rides are broken down by age, so you know which ones you can direct your kid to. There's a walk climbing wall, a bouncy car, a cute train, slides all over the place and swings! There are even swings for toddlers! I've never seen one before. And a tire swing for the riskier kids. I saw a pool, which would be great in the summer. I totally loved this park, and will definitely come back again. We just moved from Hawaii, so this is a step up from what we are used to. I'm going to love living here!

It's a big playground setting with different things. I did like the rubberized ground under the playground. One slide had a big crack in it with sharp plastic. Nothing was gold plated or diamond encrusted. Very disappointing.

Blue heron right after you enter from the south terminus. Lots of turtles basking. Eagles (adult and 2 juvies) visible in their nest, with another adult high above about 50 yds north. Another uge (we don't pronounce the "h" where I'm from) blue heron about 7/10ths of a mile from the start. Ducks, geese, hawk. Haven't seen a rabbit yet this year. My theory is that overcutting on the bank of the canal-side has caused rabbits to change their habits (seriously). No place to hide from predators. Everyone friendly...strollers, fishermen, bicyclists.... I tried to make a video of the song, "I was strolling thru the park one day, in the very merry month of May...". Lucky for the reader / listener that my phone was having memory issues. Always a 5 star!

Awesome park…read more Great playground for both smaller and older kids. Basketball court, 4 tennis courts, multiple baseball and softball fields, plus a hidden soccer field (way down on the right). Gazebo with picnic tables (can also be reserved through the town for special occasions). Bathroom and a few different water fountains. You can bring a dog, leashed (and if you pick up after them). Often thinking, this Historic Mill Pond and upstream stretch of the Scantic River must be tackled. That day finally arrived. A later Monday afternoon in July. Should be quiet. Wrong, the Park was bustling. Busy with Park goers: Nature people by the pond, one person enjoying their laptop on a shaded picnic table, kids on the playscape, other kids fishing with a parent and some with a grandparent, and then there were the kayakers loading and others unloading bound for and some returning from the same adventure. A great Small Town feeling. I unloaded and hiked my kayak & gear down to the boat ramp. Chatted with a few, the usual, the great weather, did you fish, how far did you go or plan to go. Public Safety Notice: 1. The upper side of the Mill Dam is dangerous and boaters are warned to stay clear. 2. If you're a first timer like I was, bring a GPS to track your route out and back. There are many dead-end coves and depending on the water level numerous ways to lose the River. There are Orange markers/blazes to follow the River Trail. 3. Wear your Personal Flotation Device (PFD). The Pond, in July was weedy and there was a great deal of surface algae in sections of still water. The main flow of the Scantic was fairly clear and on this trip the water level allowed easier passage across sunken or semi-sunken obstacles. Yes, bugs abound, but so do fish for anglers and foul for watchers.

As you ascend, there are a number of switch backs which aid in the steep ascent, you should be in fairly good shape before you attempt this particular climb. Once at the top, there is a beautiful view of the pioneer valley and the towns of Hampden, East Longmeadow, Longmeadow ,Springfield and parts of CT. The best time of the year to climb the mountain is in the Fall when the foliage is at its peak, it can breathe taking in its beauty.

But if you look very carefully, you may do a double take at the apparent sight of a very short fireman all decked out in a yellow and orange suit, carrying an axe in both hands. It's not an optical illusion. What you saw was a diminutive full color statue of a uniformed firefighter standing on a stone base. It's a monument donated by the Women's Auxiliary of the Somers Volunteer Fire Department in 1988. The fireman stands on vigil guarding the station, he is located in a grassy patch between the front doors of the building and the huge overhead doors of the garage where the fire trucks are parked. He'll sure grab your attention as you drive by.......
