I have been a patient of Dr. Kaur since I was 19, so about 6 years now. To her credit, she has been good at diagnosing my medical problems and has always cured my conditions, so I'll give her that. However, and *most* importantly, I feel that a doctor should give you the confidence to want to see them and discuss any and all concerns that you, as the paying patient, should have.
Over the years I have noticed Dr. Kaur has gone from just strict/stern to just flat out rude and disrespectful. Here are some examples:
1. I have OCD and at one point my then-psychiatrist was leaving his practice and recommended that I see my PCP for my refills, as I was doing "so well" (this was about 2-3 years ago). I was actually getting my Rx's from Dr. Kaur until at one point she stated that "People your age do not take this medications," suggesting that I should just see a counselor instead. I did actually get a great psychologist and was able to go down on my medications, but I switched to a psychiatrist for my refills instead as I feel I did not have her support. Afterwards, once she saw that my mood would fluctuate and the medications were a good idea she stated, (after I suggested tapering off of them) "No please don't, you definitely need them." To say I was perplexed was an understatement, but I digress.
2. I am about 15-20lbs overweight. I'm not on the obese scale by any means, but I'm definitely not slim like I used to be. I acknowledge that and my lack of motivation to change that. However *every* single time that she has brought up my weight she has not done so in a polite manner. I have always felt embarrassed and at a loss for words. One time I told her I was seeing a chiropractor for my back and neck-aches as well as a masseuse to which she quipped "You have time to go to the chiropractor 2x a week and a masseuse, but you don't have time to exercise?!" Yikes..
3. Today was the last straw and last time I will be seeing Dr. Kaur; I took my mom with me because we were going to run errands together afterwards, and because I thought Dr. Kaur would go easier on me if she was there. Nope. I waited one HOUR to see her (my appointment was at 2:00pm, I showed up at 1:45pm, she didn't walk in until 2:45pm) and when she did finally walk in she dryly asked "How can I help you." Which seemed more of a statement than an actual question. I tried to keep it short and stated that I had been seen at the walk-in clinic last week for urinating blood, and wanted to check up on the results as I was still peeing dark yellow. I stated that I was pushing a child I was nannying (last week) uphill to the park when I start noticing the pain. She said "Those things have *nothing* to do with one another" and made me feel like an idiot for even bringing it up. Additionally, I had just had surgery in March of this year where I required a blood transfusion at UCSF; she had access to that information and said she wanted to see me in July/Aug for a follow-up. To my misfortune I misunderstood (because it wasn't explained to me) that I was supposed to get bloodwork before I saw her today, not afterwards (makes sense now). She then asked "Are you taking Iron tablets?" To which I replied "No..." and she asked "Well why aren't you taking them?" At this point I'm thinking "Are. You. Serious. You didn't *prescribe* me iron at my last visit!" My mom spoke for me at this point and asked how much would I supposedly have to take if it was not told to us last time to which she quipped "I don't know, I don't have the blood results." She circled the date of when she ordered it and stated "That's why you're getting the notification on your MyChart, because the order is about to expire. Go downstairs to get it done; I will be back Tuesday after the holiday weekend and someone will call you if the results show anything abnormal." And that was it.
To say I'm incredibly hurt and embarrassed, would be a massive understatement. I have been a patient of Dr. Kaur for 6years and even if I wasn't, any of these instances would be no way to treat a patient. I have avoided her many times, oftentimes going to the Sutter walk-in clinic in Dublin or going to the downstairs Urgent Care to avoid her as much as possible. I then realized that I, as a paying patient, should be able to see my PCP with the confidence that they will take me seriously and treat me with the respect that any person should be given. Dr. Kaur may be good at diagnosing and treating illness, but that does not make her an overall good doctor. Take my advice: see someone else. read more
