This place is so underrated and good for EVERYONE! Such a cool assortment of rescue birds. As someone coming from out of town, it was wonderful to see how much care and effort is put into caring for the birds and trying to share that passion with others. It does get hot/sunny, so be prepared, but it's not super big so it's manageable. I do wish they had some more guidance or signage to share more about the birds, or their rescue stories, and directions for going around the place. Again, it's not super big but would be a nice addition. read more

A great place to spend an hour before or after your boat tour! Lots of birds to see, all protected and cared for (rescues). Stay for the noon pelican feeding! Ask how much that big white pelican weighs. You'll be amazed. read more

Loved getting to visit this location that is doing such amazing work of helping and rescuing so many birds! It is free to do a self guided walking tour and they are open 10:00AM-4:00PM daily. My husband and I really enjoyed learning about different birds that are currently there and also talking with one of the employees about a few of the specific birds. They also have a pelican feeding that is at noon every day. Though it's a free experience they do encourage donations and we were happy to donate to such an amazing effort and cause. They care for over 1,000 birds annually and work to rehab them and get them back to the wild. read more

We stopped here to visit the Mote but it wasn't available so we walked over to the Seabird building next door. A lot (if not all) of the birds have been injured and would not have survived in nature. There is a wide variety including an egret, birds of prey, pelicans and some common starlings and gulls. Allow about an hour to tour the facility which is outdoors. Admission is free and parking is in the large lot adjacent to the facility. Very enjoyable as the weather was perfect and most of the birds were active. read more

It's free and fascinating! There's just something about the birds that captures my heart. Save Our Seabirds' mission is to "Rescue, Rehabilitate, Release." Their site includes a dedicated avian hospital (behind the scenes) that cares for sick and injured birds--many harmed by human activity. Along the "birdwalk" (which is open to the public) are large enclosures for about 100 birds who are unable to be released due to a variety of isssues. Staff are friendly and can tell you about the resident birds, such as Fish, the double-crested cormorant who was fed human food as a chick and now lives with rickets that affect his wings and feet. Make sure to visit the exotic birds, such as Gabby, the umbrella cockatoo, who likes to sing "Happy Birthday" and play peek-a-boo. Outside the office, there is a gift shop with lots of fun, bird-centered items. read more

Donations encouraged: There are several birds that are in cages that cannot be released on the wild. It's staffed by volunteers that give you information about the birds. This is a bird sanctuary and hospital which we have visited every time we come to Sarasota .They are a not-for-profit that cares about all kinds of birds. This is a great place to take the kids and talk about how to care for wildlife. The staff is friendly and willing to answer all kinds of questions. They have an amazing mission based around not only rehabbing birds in need but also educating about the many species they see and teaching about the effects humans are often causing these injuries (entanglements, encounters with cars, etc.). This place could obviously use some love and money poured into it but it has an amazing mission and provides a close up opportunity to see many of Florida's native birds. At this time there is no cost to enter this place and while this is a great opportunity for people who need low cost activities, I would definitely suggest donating at much as you can so this sanctuary can not only provide for their current resident animals but can also improve their enclosures (especially those damaged by hurricane Ian). read more

This is a very special place where so many different birds are rehabbed and released if possible, kept safe and cared for if not releasable.. the birds are soo engageable.. we whistled and clicked and cooed and chatted w Rocky, an adorable cockatoo and also specially enjoyed another wonderfully sweet white cockatiel who clearly trusted and enjoyed human company... says much about the care these avians are getting.. also watched the barn owls, screech owls, barred owls, and great horned owls.. donations appreciated.. no admission fee..i think this place is awesome and i will support their wonderful work...completely non commercial.. bravo!! read more

Do not miss! Went in because my daughter volunteers there, and was just blown away by the level of care and number and variety of birds. Reading the birds' backstories heightened the experience of being so close to them. The barn owls are amazing, the tiny screech owls glower from their bower, the Sandhill Crane with the prosthetic leg still manages to saunter with dignity around his well-appropriated home. Wild-living wood storks and ibises- sensing the safety and free meals?- fly in to mooch and walk along near visitors on the paths around the property- a marvel in itself. You can spend as little as 45 minutes up to probably 3 hours if you like to just observe (I could watch the vultures for an hour easily). Go- pay the full price (it's a non-profit, help feed the birds)- and leave a donation so they can make the upgrades they need to and remain a fixture here for many years to come. read more

This place was a wonderful surprise to find across the parking lot from the Mote Aquarium. I have a special love for birds, and so do the folks at SOS. They have nice habitats put together for a variety of species and a care clinic for the birds on site. While heartbreaking to read the stories of how the birds came to SOS, it was good to see that they had comfortable homes where many could still live in flocks. Visiting this rescue is a great opportunity to see the beautiful birds of Florida up close and personal. Admission is very reasonable and you can even get a discount if you visit the Mote aquarium too. It's good to know that your money goes to help the rescued birds too. Wow! This place was great! We had initially come to the aquarium and when we were done we stumbled upon this place! They have a really great offer where you get a discount (it was only a few bucks each for admission) if you have purchased aquarium tickets, since they benefit from the location (they are directly between the two Mote buildings). First off, the volunteers were amazing! They were extremely friendly and knowledgeable! We got there at 4:30pm and were the only people in the sanctuary, so two of the volunteers gave us a private tour and taught us about some of their favorite birds. They have so many birds! If you like birds you will love this place! They have a wonderful mission, rescue, rehabilitate and release. So, when you arrive they give you a sheet that has each bird, its injury and its rehabilitation journey. It was so cool to read about each bird and how they are helping them. We saw owls. hawks, osprey, ducks, sandhill cranes, swans, gulls, emus, and parrots! It was such a blast! Definitely come here!! read more

I used to come here when it was the Pelican Man! Since they have become "Save Our Seabirds" it is much better organized and cleaner than I had remembered. They had predatory birds to sea birds, even parrots. I have never seen so many birds in one location, I think they have over 30 different species. I donated a few bucks to the cause, because it really is a great one: - Rescue injured birds - Rehabilitate native and migratory seabirds until independent of care - Release back into the wild We saw many hurt birds, some with one foot, and others with braces or casts. Being new to Florida I've developed a fascination with the local wildlife and this was a great place to see so many birds up close. They share a parking lot with the Mote so its easy to find. I believe admission was $5 per person, but when they asked my wife and I if it was our first time visiting and we admitted yes it somehow dropped to $4 for the two of us total for a first time visit. Score! They give you a brochure with information on each bird exhibit and why that bird is there. I can't even count how many species we got to observe up close including owls, shorebirds, hawks, parrots, etc. My favorite of course was the 30+ pelicans all living together. It's a little sad to see so many injured animals, but its comforting knowing they wouldn't last a day in the wild and instead have a safe home and are well cared for. I never thought I'd see a bird wearing a prosthesis leg. The only downside might be for kids that you don't actually get to feed any of the animals, unlike the flamingos at the Sarasota Jungle Garden. Interaction is limited to simply watching the animals, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. read more

They have lots of birds who've all been rescued and rehabbed but won't ever be independent enough to be release and they also do lots of successful rehab work where the birds are released back into the wild. It looks like a collector got lucky in getting 501c3 status. There are swans, ratty looking exotic parrots - including a sad, mutilating, cockatoo- and a coop of pigeons. The cranes looked like they were cared for but there were other birds that seemed like they should be elsewhere. What is this place? A rescue? An attraction? I wanted to ask someone but the gift store was closed and the people in the cages were in street clothes (like they live on the street) and looked like they didn't want to be bothered. This is a wonderful organization and they are doing such good work. You can see the birds very close up but they are in beautiful natural habitats and were not stressed by us being there. My grandmother was a bird lover and I donated in her honor. She used to give Brown Pelican talks at the elementary schools in Clearwater. read more

I don't even think this place was open anymore. There were hardly any birds there and it was so smelly. I understand they are birds but they didn't even have water or anything. Terrible experience. I only saw two volunteers and they didn't even say Hi. Weird. read more
