I got an estimate for the tear-off and replacement of the composition roof on our 2000sf house. It included the replacement of the plywood on the 2' overhang and the fascia. I received bids for the roof as is. I decided to extend the roof over the 14' X 20' deck. I sent Riley an email saying that I would be making some changes and I'd like him to come back to rebid. There would be more roof, fascia and now valleys. He came back to look at the proposed changes but I never received a revised estimate. It took some time to get the roof structure complete (retired-guy schedule) and then some time before Riley made it down. Along with making allowances for myself for any delay, I was fine with making the same allowances for roofing contractors dealing with customers and the weather. Riley was not there for the work but was in close touch via phone. English was barely a second language for the crew of 4. Carpentry is not their strong suit. I was unhappy that the fascia was butted and not spliced with 45. It didn't occur to me at first that by using the nail gun for the fascia, they were not using galvanized nails. Most of these were behind the gutter and they switched to galvanized nails for the exposed boards. There were some other issues that I decided I could live with. Riley was very responsive when I needed to talk to him (sometimes translating was needed between me and his lead guy). Once he had been gone an hour after looking at something with me when another issue came up and he turned around and came back. I am satisfied with the work done by Savage Roofing and I would use them again. Riley was easy to work with and was agreeable to the changes I made along the way. In the end, it was a good job for the price paid (it was the low bid). And although I had added an additional section of roof, the estimate was the final cost with no changes. This company's work is horrible! They replaced 2 roofs on my property & after the 1st day I showed the lead a bowl full of nails & staples, shattered pieces of plastic from my gutters that were torn off. I took a walk around video after the main roof replace the 2nd day & there were nails, staples & trash 30' away from the house. We have stepped on 2 nails since then (it's been about 3 weeks) today I looked at the rear tire on my riding mower & see it is flat with 2 nails showing, maybe more on the bottom. Savage Roofing is run by bad people. Sometimes it is that simple. Do not waste your time and money with this operation. In late 2021, I purchased a home in Anacortes from an elderly couple to house my sick, disabled father. The 95 year old seller's family provided a photo of the warranty for the roof installed by Savage in 2016, which I figured should be sufficient in a civilized town such as Anacortes. Subsequently, my home inspector noted numerous sloppy installations and omissions in the roof work that could cause problems in the near term, though nothing worthy of holding up closing. Shortly after closing, I called Savage and reached Nicole, who is tasked with stonewalling any warranty or repair requests until former customers give up. After nearly 7 months of persistence, business owner Brandon finally deigned to show up at my house. After a brief inspection, Brandon casually conceded numerous issues that should be repaired. Then Brandon went radio silent despite regular follow up. Discussions with my home inspector revealed Brandon has a poor reputation with fellow contractors. The Anacortes Department of Buildings volunteered Savage Roofing is notorious for failing to file for permits. For a time I did give up because I live 2300 miles away, am busy running a real estate development firm, and have to pull my weight at home with two babies. My sick father is now dealing with leaks. Savage will not return emails or calls. I have given Savage every opportunity to do the right thing. Over 18 months of correspondence, Savage never claimed they didn't perform the 2016 roof replacement or that the work wasn't under warranty. Savage is simply a dishonorable organization, an embarrassment to their hometown. I will submit formal complaints to the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries, Anacortes DOB, Skagit / Island Counties Builders Association, Better Business Bureau, and all other applicable agencies. Next, I will hire an attorney to pursue reimbursement if I need to use another contractor to repair anything under warranty. Anyone else abused by Savage should do the same. While Yelp whining may save a few others from hiring this shady contractor, organizations with no shame only respond to legal or regulatory force. read more

Independent contractors showed up to do the job, something that is not uncommon, but hadn't been made clear to us when job was bid. Those workers turned out to be disrespectful slobs who were repeatedly asked to employ consideration for our concerns, yet turned a deaf ear to us, leaving in a rush the last day...throwing trash out their truck windows into our yard which pretty much underscores my point and the quality of their character. read more

Following a windstorm in our area, we found our home missing a few tabs of roofing. We made a call to Savage Roofing and an assessor showed up soon after to see what repairs needed done. While keeping a focus on customers in much worse shape than we were in, Savage had a couple of folks show up within a few days and professionally and competently repaired our roof. I highly recommend the people at Savage Roofing for any work you need done to keep you securely under cover. I know that we will use them in the future as the need arises. read more

Savage put a new roof and gutters on our small cabin on Whidbey. they were very easy to work with, receptive and accommodating to our somewhat finicky requests even though this was a small job. All work was done within the budget and even ahead of schedule. Additionally, they were the lowest of four quotes we received. The site was cleaned up well. Possibly some of the older review were before some personnel changes. Definitely recommend them. read more

This company is a family company and they seem to be allowing family members with drug addiction to work on roofs and run crews. There is a guy name Brian, nice guy, but should never be on a roofing job. He showed up high out of his mind!!! Could barely talk. found out from another friend that he has a history of driving the Savage trucks, quoting jobs, and then stealing the deposits. Family just covers it up, and keeps hiring him. All the one star reviews make sense. DO NOT use this company. Called around the valley and apparently they have a pretty bad reputation. Found out it used to be owned by Gary, Brians dad. Now is owned by other family members. Don't know how to warn other people and don't like to talk bad about local businesses but this just seems like a recipe for disaster and someone needs to get control of the business. read more

Poor Customer Service. Savage Roofing repaired a 5' x 5' wind damaged section of a single family home in Anacortes. Response to my initial call was prompt and a roofer came to the house expeditiously. We discussed a cost and he estimated one hour of labor and total charges under $100. The roofer repaired the roof in 1 hour with three-tab singles I provided. ----- I received a invoice in the mail for 1.5 hours of labor and miscellaneous expenses (to include gas to my Anacortes house). Total charges, $136.60 with $28 Misc, 1.5 hr at $65 and tax. I called Savage roofing twice to inquire about 1.5 hours labor vice one hour, left messages and received a response several days later. The supervisor (I think) informed me he would look into it. He did quickly and notified me I was already receiving a discounted hourly rate due to the economy (maybe he thought he was doing me a favor by charging me a price the market would support), and the 0.5 extra labor charge over the 1 hour worked performed was for travel time. I was not informed of any travel charge when I set up the appointment, in the estimate, or prior to the bill. ----- I will not be using Savage Roofing again due to poor customer service. ----- PS. I used another roofer I Googled in Anacortes for the similar wind damage two weeks later, $75 and he provided the singles. read more

If Yelp had a "negative star" system I would give this company a -5 star. The salesman (owner Gary) was wonderful - friendly, considerate, etc, but he had no concept of how to run a quality roofing crew, or what installing a quality roof meant. He was a good salesman however - and I fell for it. Let the buyer beware! His flakey crew was like the blind leading the blind, once they got going on my roof. I bought an expensive (maybe overpriced?) 40 year roof, about 7 years ago. The last roof I would ever need in my lifetime... It is now leaking like a sponge and has done all sorts of damage inside my house. The factory shingles are still in great shape - hence their 40 year warranty would still be good - but not good for shoddy workmanship! The factory warranty is for product that is installed correctly - only. If it leaks from shoddy workmanship, like Savage Roofing provided me, the factory will not stand behind their warranty. (Catch 22) When the Savage crew worked on my house, I had so many problems with their flaky roofers I can't type them all. Suffice it to say, there were a lot of problems - and now, 7 years later, they are haunting me! I have leaks everywhere. They didn't nail down plywood - right on the very edge/corner of my roof - and tried telling me that it "was ok"; they hammered roofing nails into gaps between the 1x6 sheathing on my roof, when they should have known to cover that sheathing with 3/4" plywood; they used too short of nails; they hammered nails crooked & below the shingle line; they tried to overlap the tar paper only 1" instead of 18"; they did not layout the shingles correctly; they did not layout the hip caps correctly and left nails exposed, and on & on... When a consumer hires a roofer, he does not expect that 1.) he will have to supervise the job; 2.) he will have leaks 7 years out on a 40 year roof! Since I have had this latest problem, I have called around to a number of roofing companies and I have heard nothing but bad stories about Savage Roofing! Everybody knew about Savage's poor reputation but me. Savage advertises that they've been around since the 1940's - and they have - just not with this current owner. The current owner Gary, was a salesman for the original company and now owns it. Good salesman - lousy businessman. I contacted Savage twice, with this leak problem, and have never had so much as a return call from them. Their customer service is terrible. Buyer beware - the 40 year guarantee, that Savage promotes is a materials warranty, from the shingle factory, and it is worthless if the installers botched the job. Take my advice and stay away from Savage Roofing. There was no Yelp back when I hired Savage to do my roof... I hope ANYBODY considering hiring Savage Roofing reads this post! read more

Savage Roofing Company has a very attractive and informative website. Don't fall for it. After a recent windstorm tore the roof off a rental property I own, I called Savage to do emergency repairs until an insurance claim could be processed. Someone showed after another roofer had done a very temporary repair to keep the rain out. When I explained to the Savage representative that this had been done and I would like them to do a more extensive temporary repair, I got a rude reply and he drove off. Later I included Savage Roofing in a request for bids broadcast e-mail for permanent repairs. Savage responded and set an appointment time and day. The representative -- the same one as before -- showed up 45 minutes late without explanation or apology. Instead of getting out and greeting me, he rolled down his truck window, made disparaging and very rude remarks referencing his earlier visit, then sped off. With him went a $10,000.00 job and my ill will. Unless you're someone who likes being denigrated and abused while trying to spend money with a local business, avoid Savage Roofing Company like the plague read more

We originally chose this roofer (after contacting about 3 others) because they were the most responsive and, even though ALL contractors are very busy right now, made us feel as if they actually valued our business. They also had a very fair bid. They showed up about a week earlier than expected (yea!) and worked their butts off! They were friendly, respectful and most importantly, did a good, quality job. Brian was extremely professional and had rare follow through. The foreman on the job, Adam, was a delight and again, respectful, hardworking and dependable. I strongly recommend against hiring Savage Roofing. In the fall of 2007, Savage Roofing installed a new roof on our home; the work included a warranty. That first winter, water leaked into one of the rooms whenever there was a rainstorm. Savage Roofing made some small repairs, which helped initially, but the leaking continued. In 2014, Savage determined that the problem was with two of the skylights in that room and replaced them. But the leaking continued. As time went on, and water continued to penetrate the room, Savage determined that the third and last skylight needed to be replaced, which they did. Although the roof was under warranty, the skylights were not, so we paid for the installation of all three skylights. But rain continued to come in with each storm; during a big storm in July2020, we were emptying buckets at a time. We called Savage again, but this time received no response. Our repeated calls were ignored; and when we requested documentation of their visits and work done, first our requests were ignored; eventually they were refused. Because of the warranty from Savage Roofing, no other company would agree to do the work necessary to repair the roof. Finally, in 2020, a representative from Savage Roofing (who by that time had become an owner) came and looked the roof over; he told us, again, that the roof was under warranty. But neither he nor anyone else from Savage would return to complete the repairs; once more, they stopped returning our calls. We finally had a legal demand letter sent; they replied that they no longer work in Bellingham and that the company that had issued the warranty had closed. Our research confirmed the website for the original company was still up and the new company's name and new website parallels the old one. Finally, we were able to have another company, Western Roofing, install a new roof. During installation they discovered improperly installed flashing and skylights, and that staples from the old roof that had not been removed--the resulting water penetration had caused the entire roof and sub-roof to become "squishy." Throughout the room where water penetration had been evident, there was extensive water staining and rot throughout; this required custom manufacture of replacement beams and more. The water damage was extensive. My error in failing to seek a legal solution sooner resulted in high out-of-pocket costs to our family. Though a few employees were really nice, their niceness does not make up for Savage's improper roof removal, and improper skylight flashing, and nonresponsiveness that resulted in terrible damage to our home and extremely expensive repairs. I cannot recommend using Savage Roofing, or any company related to it. read more

To date, metal panels make a warping sound during wind storms and taped garbage bags under my skylights keep the breeze out, plus many other problems. The rudest and most un-professional people I have met on the Island. "Too Busy" was his 'excuse' for not calling to say he wouldn't be showing up for an appointment??? And attitude! I had a few roofers come take a look and they pointed out the many things that Savage did not do correct. Savage has neglected to return any of my calls. WORST experience with a roofing company. We are weeks behind, thanks to them. Awful, awful customer "service". We finally just fired them and are moving on to another roofing company. They have an F rating with the better business bureau, I wish we had done better research before we went with them. They installed the underlayment - after multiple calls - incorrectly, it leaks like a sieve. They use a sub contractor to install the roofing and blame them for issues. The crew was on time, considerate of property, quiet, very professional. They were hard workers - coming early and staying until it was finished. No Customer Service. Savage Roofing cleaned our roof and gutters, but did not clear the downspout specifically pointed out during the estimate and again when the crew started work. We soon found out that they had also plugged our drain field, damaging the lawn. Repeated calls garnered promises of follow-up, but after long waits and re-arranging our schedules, Savage never showed up or called. Email, USPS mail and compliants to the Better Business Bureau were all ignored. Sometimes the high-priced (and 'most experienced') bid is not the way to go.
