This was our first visit and so we parked in the lot that gps took us to and then followed the signs for the hiking trail. We were impressed with the number of hikers and mountain bikers out and about. What I really enjoyed about this park is that the trails are all easy to follow and loop around so that you can choose any direction to walk. We started with the shorter hike and walked to the overlook which was so pretty! We spent some time just watching the river and then decided to try another trail for a bit. Honestly, it was really nice to be outside. Baxter was so happy to be able to play in the leaves and we all got really excited because we saw a bunch of deer while we were out walking! Of course, when we saw them, we all stopped and just let the deer have their space to get where they were going. The loop that we completed was about 3 miles and I really appreciated how easy it was to navigate the park. We did not get over to the cave during this visit, but will plan to visit again on another warm-ish day so that we can explore the other trails.

Fir those who want more of a "nature" feel there are some hiking and biking trails tucked away near the walking trails, which in my opinion, could use better trail markers. The hiking trails are still close to the border if the walking trails, so you don't go far into the wooded areas. My favorite part of the park were the caves, as soon as you enter the bottom of the trail where the caves are you can feel the cool air from the caves. It was great to check out and I wish the trails offered more scenic views in addition to this.

Of all the area of the United States, Cahokia Mounds, the past area of the Mississippi people's of the past is the largest. It's the most influential pre Columbian that we have yet to know of in the Americas. Now they believe that early settlers started here in 6th century AD. Early indigenous peoples were burying their dead and they have found personal effects with the ancient burials. The French in the 17th century arrived and found an early settlement of Illinois inhabitants. These are not the first! No written language exists. Just the mounds. It's been preserved for us all to see. It's an hour from Springfield to Colinsville, Illinois. This is one of the top 25 things to see and do in Illinois. You can walk on the actual mounds . Then she proceeded to give a history lesson on the Cahokia Mounds. I learned a lot. The staff were excellent. There was a huge canoe that was hollowed out from a huge tree. There were many artifacts. I went an one of the trails and discovered many things in the process. If you haven't been you must go. It's a great experience.

We went specifically to see the Flags of Valor. This was the first time we had seen them. We ended up going on the last day and there were a lot of people there. We finally found a place to park and walked back to the flags It was extremely moving and impressive. It was explained to me that the flags are there every five years. It's not always the same display - different groups from September 11 are featured so there are a different number of flags. There are dog tags and photos on the flag poles. There are notes people have written. This year there were 7,650 flags. They're all in perfect lines. The flags this year honored every life lost in the War on Terror - the victims, the first responders of 9/11, and those that who have since succumbed to related illnesses or PTSD. I'm so glad I heard about it and that we were able to go.

It is so comparative to Central Park in Manhattan in terms of grandeur and liveliness. I don't know if you could walk Forest Park in a day and feel like you saw everything because it winds around and there are smaller trailers that pop in and out of nowhere. Surprisingly, I do not think the city takes care of the park, but an established group called Forest Park Forever, whose history starts back in the 60s, or 80s? They are a group of volunteers who tend to the park - every part of it, in every season, and really beautify it! There is security on patrol often enough so it's not too isolating and scary. There are parking lots closer to the main attractions. There is also street parking here, which adds to it being active but a park you can drive through, bike, and walk.

There's a "lake' with a fountain that is peaceful and there are plenty of spots to park and sit it take a walk and rejuvenate yourself. But the crown jewel is the YMCA right inside the park. It has exercise machines, 2 aquatic centers (the outdoor one is quite spectacular in the summertime), but the best is that I'd had comfortable places to lounge, work on your laptop, get free coffees and tea (like Parisian Blackberry) or hang out with people in the Senior Hub.

Then the streets around the park were full causing the streets capable of only allowing for a single lane of traffic. Even with a clear flow and literally no room for cars traveling in opposite directions... some attempted to push in, causing longer stand stills. It's like trying to go to the zoo/forest park on the weekends. But the park itself is fun!!! I do wish there was more shaded areas within the park itself. Parking needs to be fixed... there is no way an emergency vehicle could have gotten in to help if help was needed. That is a big concern.
