This was a fun way to start the weekend! Family was in town for the weekend and we decided to come to Satchel's on Friday night. I loved the vibe and the pizza was good! They serve a pan pizza and NY style pizzas. You can customize the toppings. We ordered a pan pizza for four adults and two NY cheese slices for the kids. The pan pizza was the perfect size and the crust was cooked well! The dough was okay and a bit airy for pizza. The NY pizza was okay. Not the best I had but not the worst I had. For a starter we ordered the satch salad and it was great! It was a big portion and hit the spot! We did not order dessert but it looked yummy! They present you with a view did we to look through the options. The decor is great and eclectic so be sure to take everything in as you look around! We will be back when in Gainesville! While visiting University of Florida, had to stop and get pizza at a local pizza joint Satchel's Pizza. Pretty cool story how the owner started this restaurant. Pretty cool interior and exterior. We started with salad- pretty big for 4 people. We ordered a pizza and calzone. Both were pretty good and tasted good- nothing extraordinary. Overall: This is one of the local spots that you need to go to if you're ever in Gainesville. They have great eclectic decor with great pizza. Ambience: There is parking outside but the main can be a little tight. There is an additional parking lot just a few feet down that is less tight to park and back out of than the main area. There are plenty of places to sit. To sit in the "van," you have to see the hostess and check availability. They have a bar area that is opening seating and has little knick knacks like a mini-lite brite and other toys for kids who grew up in the 90s. I like sitting in the bar area when watching Gator games or if there is live music. You can also sit outside surrounded by plants and check out a cool airplane. They added a playground of sorts for kids. Over the years, the back area has been made kid friendly. Inside the main sitting area has such a modge podge of decor. You could play eye-spy and every table has a different "top." Food: The pizza is great and why most people come to Satchel's, but do not sleep on the salad! And the portion sizes are pretty decent! I would honestly just come to eat their salad. They have local beers and some crafts sodas. To see the dessert menu, they bring out a ViewMaster (another 90s kid toy). Service: Is pretty good! We're in town to visit family and they all wanted to go to Satchel's. This is a really cool spot to grab some pizza. It's very eclectic, for lack of a better word. They have a gift shop in the back with all these old school board games, harmonicas and stuff I remember from when I was a kid. Remember those peg boards, "Light Bright"? Yea. They have those for sale. As for the food, it was decent. The Satchels Salad was really good with their special dressing. The pizza is hand tossed and has a crispy undercarriage and crispy crust. If you're a cheese person you definitely want to order extra cheese because that as well as the other toppings are minimal. I like toppings and this didn't fit the bill in that category. The service also left something to be desired. We would have to say excuse me, excuse me, excuse me to get our waitress to stop and get refills or anything else we needed. I do recommend it for the experience of it but I'm sure you could find better pizza somewhere in Gainesville and you could definitely find better service. read more

We got the soda flight which seem to vary day by day since they make it themselves. They could have been more carbonated. We also got the Major pizza and added hot honey. It was very tasty and a typical college pizza. The environment is really what you're paying for. The place is super cool and can keep you exploring for hours. Second time here, and both have been great. Had a pie the first time and we did a calzone this visit. The pies and calzone are both big enough to give leftovers for lunch the next day, and all taste very good. Ours was pepperoni, ham and mushrooms and service was pretty fast. OMG Satchel's. In a world of minimalism and farmhouse chic, Satchel's is an exercise in brilliant maximalism and I am here for it. I found this pizza place online, while looking for a restaurant near UF. We have some dietary restrictions in my house, and this checked a lot of boxes. I wanted to sit outside in the fun garden/patio, but it was still a little warm, so we opted for the dining room. Satchel's makes all their own soft drinks, so I asked for their version of a diet cola. The server asked me if had tried it before, and if she could bring me a sample first. I'm glad she did. It was good, but I preferred an unsweet tea as the flavor was just a bit too strong in comparison. We went back and forth on the menu until I advised my husband to order a pizza customized to his needs and we could take the rest home. He went for a pesto base with feta and some veggies. I wanted to try their regular pizza, so I ordered a slice of cheese with their house salad to split. Honestly, next time, I wouldn't share. It was delicious with all sorts of "stuff" and a yummy vinaigrette. That being said, the small did easily serve the both of us with some extra, so great value. Service was great. Vibe was immaculate. What a fun spot! I've been here twice and still feel like I'm missing things that I should look at! Upon entry, you see the van parked in the front yard, and as you pass it - the doors are open and people are sitting inside eating pizza. It's super cool! But, that means your eyes are up and not looking down at the entry sidewalk - it's paved in Pennie's and occasional keys - another fun find! We had the Satch salad and added feta and ham. Food was delivered promptly and three of us split the salad with some leftover. It's huge and their dressing isn't overwhelming - the perfect amount. If you love it like me, you can buy it afterwards. This time we ordered a deep dish with mushrooms, artichokes and extra cheese - I love me some cheesy za! It was heavenly - and again, the three of us split it and had 3 slices leftover! Two were so full after 1 piece that they split the other. I'm not saying who ate two whole pieces...Leslie. ;-D If you are here, the visit isn't complete without going to the back bldg and seeing all the fun things they sell. I bought 5-6 Christmas gifts and it's months away! There is also a full bar back there with live music - and even further back is a plant shopping area! Does Satchel's have really good pizza? Yes. You would be hard-pressed to find anyone who would disagree with that. Although, it's not my favorite pizza in Gainesville, not by a long shot. As great as it tastes, it's over priced: paying $2.50 per topping for the pizza is a little outrageous. I got the medium sized Mama, which comes with four toppings and is enough for two people (or one if you're really hungry). What you really come to Satchel's for is the setting: the wild and eccentric art and designs all over the walls, the intentionally mismatched plates, the back yard with metal structures that is a cross between new wave art pieces and scrapyard dumpster pile. Make sure to check out their bar and store located next to the restaurant for all the little knickknacks and Satchel's merchandise. If you have yet to go, I would suggest you get the Satchel's experience pronto. read more

One of my favorite places to go to when visiting Gainesville! The whole place is made of recycled items / super cool decor hanging from everywhere (mobiles, plant holders, art and more). It's funky and fun! The pan pizza is a personal favorite and I had to get it again this visit. We started with their homemade sodas - root beer and lemon lime. Then we got the satchel salad to share. And then we ordered the pan pizza with ricotta, onion, pepperoni and tempeh sausage. The pan pizza takes a while so the salad helped fend off our hunger but the wait is soooo worth it. Tried for the first time on a weekend trip to the area. Got a couple pizzas to go. It was a Friday at about 5 pm. Called to order and not bad, about 45 minutes. When we got there, the place was absolutely packed and a lot of people waiting to be seated. Was glad we ordered to go. The pizza had a good crisp crust and was cooked well done just like we asked. They could've been a little more generous with the pepperoni and cheese, but overall it was a very good pizza. No wonder there was a wait. The inside and decor were hipster/hippyish. People seem to go back and forth on the Satchel salad. We always have to stop here when we are in Gainesville. The pizza is awesome and the salads are the best ever!!!! We always eat in the bar area out back. This way service is much quicker and you don't have to wait for a table. In the evenings they usually have a live band. The place is decorated with all the things from your past. They have toys from years ago. They have outside seating too. It's far from fancy but look at the pictures I posted and you will get a feel for the atmosphere.
