Kobe Japanese Steakhouse is nestled in a prime location next to the Meuse River and The Crown Plaza…read moreHotel. The ambiance is slightly upscale and reservations are required. Location and ambiance, however, do not make up for the lack of zest in the food and lukewarm attitude of the wait staff. Annoyance number one: you must walk over a very large grated vent in order to ascend the stairs leading into the restaurant. No big deal if this was a causal restaurant, but seeing as this is a slightly upscale establishment, I dolled myself up a bit and wore a modest heel. Hours later as I teetered over a grated vent, I regretted my wardrobe selection. Annoyance number two: mediocre house wine. My love and I knew going into our outing, that we were going to fork over a pretty penny in order to dine. No problem. In our naiveté we assumed that you get what you pay for. Not in this case. I ordered the house white to pair with our unmemorable appetizer. Didn't even finish my wine. It tasted like it came out of a box. The hibachi was ok. Nothing spectacular. I had shrimp and chicken. The meal lacked depth. I watched the chef cook, and noticed him seasoning the food, but did not taste anything but soy sauce and butter once it was served on my plate. Not to be discouraged, I set my hibachi aside and ordered from the sushi bar. Fish was fresh. Salmon and Tuna were particularly good, and wasabi was not overpowering. Service was average. Hostess's and waiters' attitudes were pretentious. Then again, TEFAF was being held in town that week which can attribute to airs being particularly high. Not great enough to rave, but not bad enough to delete from my restaurant dossier.

We have been regular customers at Tokyoto in Maastricht for a long time, always enjoying the food…read moreand service. However, after our most recent experience, we will not be returning. On this occasion, I called at 5:00 PM to reserve a table for four and was told there was no availability before 8:00 PM. An hour later,my friend called from a different number, requesting a table for five, and was told we could be accommodated at 6:30 PM, provided we finished by 8:30 PM. We accepted, and her name was noted down for the reservation. When I arrived along side 2 of my friends at the restaurant at 6:30 PM, the staff at the entrance could not find our reservation. The man who had taken my booking over the phone, an older gentleman behind the counter (allegedly the owner) came over and immediately dismissed our claim, insisting that no such reservation had been made. When we attempted to show him the call on the phone as proof, he refused to look and rudely waved his hand, calling us liars in front of a fully seated restaurant. (Saying I have no time for Liars waving his hand and asking his employee to get rid of us) We were stunned. After a moment, our other friends arrived, and we went back inside to clarify the situation. Suddenly, his attitude shifted when he realized we were indeed a party of five. Without any acknowledgment of his previous behavior, he simply stated that he had not seen all of us and then offered us a table. By then, the damage had been done, he had humiliated us publicly, all because of his own mistake. While he did eventually offer a half-hearted apology, it felt forced and insincere. When we expressed how unacceptable it was to accuse loyal customers of lying, his response was dismissive: "I apologized. If you don't want to stay, you can leave." The only reason we remained was that we had invited friends and did not want to disrupt the evening further. However, this experience has left a lasting negative impression. Being falsely accused of lying, treated with blatant disrespect, and then given an insincere apology is not something any paying customer should tolerate. We have always enjoyed Tokyoto in Maastricht, but after this incident, we will no longer be returning. This is not how loyal customers (or any one for that matter) should be treated, and no amount of good food can make up for such appalling service.

If you actually enjoy sushi, avoid this place completely, the rolls were extremely dissapointing…read more Me and my girlfriend came to this place on the recommendation of friends for all you can eat sushi. In my experience, this is one of the first sushi places I have been to that completely compromises quality for the sake of the all you can eat dining style. Not to mention the laundry list of conditions that accompanied the all you can eat meal! Some of the rolls were okay (the one with crab and salmon roe is the only one that currently comes to mind), but I still wholeheartedly believe this place should be avoided if you actually enjoy quality sushi. In addition, the service was completely deplorable. At one point, we waited roughly 45 minutes sitting at our table ready to order another round of food with the staff blatantly ignoring every attempt to get their attention. I am not exaggerating when I say the staff would briskly walk past us and intentionally avoid eye contact. Normally, this type of behaviour is something I can tolerate, but it was just us and two other couples in the restaurant at the time, the staff effectively outnumbered the customers. Seriously cannot stress this enough. There are good sushi places in Maastricht but this is certainly not one of them.

As a person who always order ramen, Ramen here is quite disappointing. They use white thick udon in…read morethe ramen which is not traditional at all. The sliced pork is also not well prepared. Usually in Japanese ramen, the sliced meat has both lean meat and a bit fatty part and the meat is slow stewed for hours that the fatty part is not tasted oily anymore. Here the meat is dry and seems to quick cook. The bowel seems to be thrown together quickly without any heart went into it when preparing. My friend ordered sushi which is also average. Not that fresh or special tasty The 2 Stars give to the lunch special options(12-5pm Monday-Saturday) so you save a few euro. Otherwise I would just give 1 star if pay 11 Euro for a bad ramen. I noticed most high rating happened in 2015 or before and the waiter also mentioned they changed to use udon in ramen from usual ramen 2 years ago. Maybe the restaurant is taken over by new owner or had a new chef since then and the quality has gone down. We initially planned to go to another sushi restaurant next to it but because they were fully booked, we went to this one. It probably has the reason why this restaurant still had so many empty spots while another one next to it was completely full. Last but not least please any people who run a restaurant, put your heart in when preparing for your food. Such a shame.
