This is quite the quirky little place! First of all, who is buying these shoes?! Someone must be, because they have sooooo many! Apparently they are all cobbled by shoe elves, on site, and you can even book factory tours. The place looks like an Old Timey Costco-esque General Store. It's quite large! They offer other items besides shoes here as well. Toys, clothing, candles, jams, jellies, syrups and snacks. They have little baskets filled with different candy, that you can then fill up a bucket with, for a set price. There are employees walking around, waiting to assist you. They also have a collection of vintage automobiles scattered about the property that you can admire. My favorite part was the .25 cent fountain Coke, and the .5 cent bag of popcorn, which is seasoned to perfection. It seems a lot of people come for that experience alone. That was my reason for coming, thanks to the countless videos I have seen on TikTok and IG. Overall, this is a pretty cool place to come and experience firsthand. It's definitely a destination place though, because it is a little off the beaten path. We actually drove about 25 minutes from where we live. But, it was a fun experience. I forgot to mention that they also have an ice cream counter inside, but it was closed the day we went. Went on Memorial Day for a fun stop while on the road after seeing videos and photos online. Was disappointed compared to what everyone was saying. The old cars were cool and fun for the kids but there was nothing else outside of that and shoes. Though we did stop for a new pair for myself, the kiddos were hyped up for the popcorn, icecream, and penny candy.... Only thing that was open was the candy everything else was shut off. Let the kiddos fill a small red pail for $5 full of candy.... Don't even get to keep the pail... huge disappointment. read more

Ok, so, this was one of most unique places we have been to in a while. It had a lot of interesting stuff as well as a factory tour. We didn't take the tour, but we had the chance to wonder around. We didn't purchase shoes but they had buckets of old time penny candies which we bought. The whole place was a combo of store and antiques. I highly recommend this spot. We only stopped in for the general store. The store makes you feel like you're in the older days. Being able to get a popcorn and coke for $0.30 was a great deal. They also have a little ice cream parlor near the back of the store. We did look around at the shoes and they are over my budget however they are all locally made. We did go by the clearance section and they did have a good selection of shoes for reasonable prices half of the staff was friendly the other stuff we're not very personable. read more

Going to SAS was a wonderful experience. The ambience is that of the late 1800s. I went to the store with my Family to pick out some shoes for the year. We were looking for quality and comfort and we found it here. The customer service was awesome and we were grateful to get some shoes. SAS is a Family owned and operated shoe store that has been open since the late 1970s. The experience is quite remarkable. They sell old fashioned candy, popcorn and Coca Cola, they also have a small ice cream store within this huge Factory shoe store. There are also demonstration to shoe making that I saw as I visited the Clearance section. I was happy to see so many people working and courteous and attentive. A woman of 95 needed help trying on her shoes and a lady helped her measure her foot and try on shoes. So you can take your Grandparents here for a nice pair of shoes that will truly last with great quality. In each shoe is the detail and craftsmanship of those who through the generations have mastered the art of shoe making. It was a wonderful delight to spend a morning just trying on shoes and having fun with my Family. Take your Family! Take your friends! Take your Beloved! You will be pleasantly surprised! P.S. I was really looking forward to seeing this place as I've been wanting some shoes. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed in my experience. The men's shoe department is very disorganized. I wear a 13 wide, and to find all of my options would literally take an hour to find them all. In the women's department the shoes are organized in such a way that it would only take about 2 minutes to find all your shoe size options. Why the difference in organization? The men's section is organized by style. The women's shoes are organized by size. It's ridiculous how the men's shoes are organized. As a matter of fact, I came across another guy who was having the same problem. That said, it just isn't me who feels the men's shoe department needs a reorganization. Anyway, my time there was so annoying I left without purchasing any shoes.....as did the other guy I was talking to. If you go to this store and you're a man, I hope you have better luck finding your shoe size options than I did. read more

1. One day shipping is not that IF you meet their cut off time of 2pm Central; and it's not on a Friday. I ordered mine on Thursday at 3pm Eastern, paid $85 for one day shipping and got them Monday late afternoon! I didn't see ANYTHING that warned me of this! 2. I didn't see ANYTHING that told me of a $10 RESTOCKING FEE if I just returned versus exchanged. 3. The first pair I received, a 10 Wide, were so tight, I had to doublecheck they were actually 10 WIDE! These are NOT made for normal feet! I love visiting SAS headquarters. I first went with my mom just to accompany her to buy her favorite chanclas. I then found that they not only made those unattractive white nurse shoes, but also cute sandals! I was sold. I bought black and gold strappy sandals and they were amazing for working and standing on my feet for hours. I wore those pairs out and replaced them. They are now wearing and I need to take another trip. I also got a pair for my daughter and she wore those out! She now has another set. They measure your foot for a precise fit. I have wide feet and my kid keeps growing so this service is crucial. The store itself is charming! There's an ice cream shop and you can buy popcorn and soda for ten and fifty cents. You can also fill a bag of old-fashioned candy and taffy for $2. This is great to take to the office candy jar. Outside is an array of vintage cars and pumps. You can spend a good hour here and come out with great items from the general store including hand-made soaps, candles, gift cards, and other old-fashioned goodies. I also want to mention that growing-up, we knew several senior ladies that worked there. SAS hired many moms and grandmothers to work their craftsmanship so owning a pair of SAS shoes is extra special to me. I'm ready for new pairs of sandals but since they range from $70-$100+, I need to save up. I totally missed the expiration date of their last coupon. :( read more

I have been a customer since the 1980s. My feet love their shoes and I seldom wear any other ones. They are a great value since they last and last and keep their look. I also have a favorite shoulder purse that is 30 plus years old and was relined at the factory to increase its life. I have been wearing SAS shoes for more years than I can remember but I had never visited the General Store in south San Antonio. So after shopping with a friend earlier in the day, we made our way there. In a way, it reminds me of the Vermont Country Store--rural decor but in this case, definitely Texan. Besides shoes you'll find candy barrels, souvenirs, ice cream, popcorn and fountain Coke that actually has flavor; these last two are priced at five and ten cents, respectively. But we were here for shoes; my friend loves to shop so I left her browsing the aisles while I made my way to the men's department. I knew what I wanted and I was fortunate to have Jessie wait on me. It was obvious that he was proud of the product and of the quality of service he provided. It has been my experience that SAS employees want to insure that your shoes fit properly and Jessie was no exception. Few nowadays actually measure both feet for length and width but Jessie did just that. I remember when buying a pair of shoes meant a break-in period and the pain associated with it. But when I slipped on my new pair of Ambassadors, it was as if I was putting on a comfortable pair of house shoes, so perfect was the fit. My Ambassadors in hand, I found my friend being helped by Rita. She was a joy and a better representative of SAS would be hard to find. Many folks go into "sticker shock" at the prices; it's very easy to spend over $200 for a pair of shoes. But the SAS shoes I have on while writing this have lasted me over seven years of daily use and are still going strong, such is their quality. And at the General Store, something is always on sale. I saved $73 on my shoes, more than worth the gas spent coming from Kerrville. If you haven't visited them, do come and bring the kids--they'll love the place. And if you're interested in a free tour of the factory, these are held during the week; just give them a call to find out times--I'm definitely coming back for that! read more

I had family visiting and looking for San Antonio specific things to do - my mom had heard of factory tours at SAS so we decided to drive over. The tour is very informative, I think we all enjoyed it. Lots to see in their plant and I dare say this is a museum in waiting as there are so few manufactures like it. I was taken aback by the prices, I guess you can't operate in a major US city and be profitable if your prices are competitive. We bought some small items in the gift store but no one felt the shoes were priced to sell and we left without a new pair of shoes. It's a one and done sort of experience, all enjoyed but no one is putting it on the list of things to do during the next visit. read more

They have a cute little ice cream shop in the store, which has very good ice cream. I love how there are many relics from around the 30s to 70s, especially the cars. I have came here since I was a little girl and have always enjoyed visiting this place. Today while leaving the security had locked us and a few other people in and we weren't able to leave till a nice Lady went to open the gate for us to leave. Today's I was kind of disappointed with my visit and I hope it will not happen again. Was I the only person who never realized that SAS stood for San Antonio Shoemakers? Or that SAS actually makes some surprisingly stylish, stupidly comfortable sandals that fly in the face of their orthopedic granny shoe reputation (admittedly, you have to overlook the straight-to-the-convent look of some of their offerings)? Or that said granny shoes are wildly expensive? Our visit to the SAS headquarters was eye-opening for all of these reasons and more. Turns out it is not just a shoe store. There's popcorn, ice cream, and soda with 1950s pricing; loads of gift items; so much penny candy that your teeth will start aching immediately; a giant collection of vintage cars you can check out; a made-on-the-spot kids' shoe section; old-school salespeople who take their time to fit your foot just so; and scads of heavily discounted shoes that make the SAS price point a lot easier to swallow. Oh, and if you want to channel your inner third grader, you can even go on a field trip, I mean factory tour, to see how the shoes are made. This was the most randomly enjoyable stop while we were in San Antonio for the weekend. Overpriced shoes! We bought a pair of shoes for my wife. The lady measured my wife`s foot, assured us they would fit. One pair did, the other slips out at the heel. My wife wore it half a day, removed them and set them aside. We went back, they didn't want to hear it or work with us at all. My sister had recently been here said it had improved by alot from the last time and that they had a big lollipop. So I took baby and headed out there. I went into SAS shoe company trying to buy some shoes for my grandma we walked into the store around 4:50 knowing that we had about an hour to shop for shoes. Celia greets us and is showing us shoes, but she keeps making comments to her coworkers about closing time. My grandma felt rushed and she ended up buying shoes she did not like. They charged my credit card on December 31st, 2021 for shoes I sent them for resoling earlier in the month. When I called customer service as to where my shoes were on February 4th, they informed me that it would be another 10 days before they would ship. I inquired as to why they charged my card and they informed me that they had people that sent them shoes that they didn't pay for the work, this after I had already given them my card number and authorization! I bought a pair of $140.00 dress shoes for a new job. At my new job, I stand on my feet for my entire shift. I bought the shoes at the Houston location. I grew up with my parents wearing SAS shoes. They would travel frequently, and swore by them. My mother-in-law has the same addiction. I have always thought that they were meant for the people that had crossed over from the Fashion First/Comfort Second side of footware to Comfort First/Fashion Second side. I remember them being the shoes of choice of all of the nuns in my Catholic grade school. Recently, my children have become fans of the show "How It's Made" on the Discovery Channel. We've watched factories turn out everything from jelly beans to hockey sticks to contact lenses. As I am always looking for a great new field trip for us, I thought a factory tour would be an interesting one. I knew that SAS (standing for San Antonio Shoes) had a factory here, so I looked up times and booked a tour. Although there are stores scattered around San Antonio, the factory is located on the south side of town, near I10 and Division. It is at the cross section of Zarzamora and New Laredo Highway. As you drive into the parking lot, it feels like stepping into another world. A train station platform greets you as you park your car and walk toward the old-town-looking building. Inside, you are met by a world from another time. My children love reading the "Little House on the Prairie" series, and it reminded me of that. It had a general store type of feeling, and sold everything from toffee candy to gardening books. Cat food dishes and keychains. An old fashioned ice cream parlor offered free soft serve to children and in another area, they were able to get popcorn for 5 cents. They marveled at the classic car in the middle of the floor, sitting right next to the giant stuffed bull that was next to the outhouse. If you think that it all sounds thrown together, than I'm not adequately communicating that all of this works like a tapestry of the past put together for your enjoyment. And, among all of the many old fashioned delights, they sell......oh, yes, shoes! One section has men's shoes. As my husband browsed, he was greeted by an employee who ushered him over to a seat. The seat was the seat of a horse-and-buggy carriage. She measured him, pulled out her shoehorn, and put on the dressy loafers that he had been looking at. He really liked them, and bought them at $30 off the regular price. You see, the factory store here sells the "seconds", although honestly, I have yet to find a flaw. Next to the men's, they sell children's shoes, and they make them on the spot. My kids enjoyed watching them sew the shoes together, and were disappointed that they didn't come in their size. They only go to size 10. Then, we ventured to the women's side, which was sorted by size. There was also a world of purses and belts and accessories. The girls ate popcorn while I tried on some shoes. I was surprised that either the styles had been updated or that I'm venturing into that Comfort First side. I don't think so, though. The three-inch Mia sandals sitting in my closet don't exactly scream of coziness. After selecting two pairs of sandals, we headed over to take our factory tour. We had pre-arranged this, although if you call the store (924-6562), they can tell you what their regular tour times are. There is no charge for the tour. We boarded a shuttle bus, and were taken into what seemed like a real-life version of the "How It's Made" show. Everything was buzzing - people, sewing machines, racks of shoes being walked around the building. Every station was different. At one station, someone would be stretching the leather. At another, someone was cutting it. At another, someone was sewing it. Near the end, someone would be attaching it to the sole. At the end, the sharp-eyed quality control staff would check for the slightest imperfection. I imagined that this is what the elves from the "Elves and the Shoemaker" story would look like as they cranked that footware out in the middle of the night. What was pleasant to discover was that people seemed happy to be working there. There were signs filled with positive affirmations all around, and I never go the "sweat shop" feel that I would have expected from a factory. I also liked that they said that everything is made in one of their four USA factories. The tour lasted about 45 minutes, a perfect time for children's short attention spans. I had once arranged a field trip for our homeschool group here, but my kids were sick on the scheduled day, so we missed it. The parents all said that they had a great time, though, and now I was able to see why. So don't miss this hidden treasure in San Antonio! read more

I don't understand why no one has reviewed the SAS Shoe Factory and General Store in San Antonio before. We randomly were looking to buy some SAS shoes to take back to Cali while we were visiting San Antonio, and this location came up in our gps search. Little did we know that this was the official headquarter store! We sure did luck out because the variety of SAS shoes here is a bit overwhelming with the amount of options available. Luckily they have knowledgeable and friendly sales associates who know their SAS shoes like the back of their hand. We met several sales associates who have been there for over 10-11 years. I picked up a pair of Maria shoes and being a factory store, it was about 20-30% cheaper than SAS shoes you would buy at the mall or other retail shoe stores. They even have shoe tours during specific times of the day; unfortunately we arrived too late in the day and missed out. We heard it's better to come on the weekdays because that is when you can view the people actually making the shoes in the factory so you get a full SAS experience. The General Store portion offers .05 popcorn and .10 Coca Cola!!! How can you beat that?!? I didn't get to go to any other SAS stores in Texas but if you have to go to just one location, this one off of New Laredo Highway seems like a great choice. read more
