Wow took a long time to write this review but I've been going to Sargent Cleaners for over a decade. They've done incredible work on my wedding gown--it fit perfectly after their alterations. They've also done my husband's suits and they always come back looking sharp. They've also handled our seasonal blankets and take care of all my nicest clothes, like delicate dresses and blouses, with such attention to detail. I've had bad experiences with other cleaners before, but I never had to worry here. They always deliver high-quality and attention to detail, and I know my clothes are in good hands. No wonder they've been around so long--it's clear why so many locals trust them. I would never trust anyone else even if they're cheaper. The people on here comparing with the other cleaners, are obviously cheap and don't have nice clothes. I would never risk my clothes and items just because it's cheaper. I've come here for a couple dry cleaning drops as well as repairing a nasty rip in one of my casual blazers. And for a cleaner that's literally walking distance, I have no major complaints. Stuff I ask to be cleaned has been. For a very obvious rip to be patched together near seamless, also what the doctor ordered. I will say it's a little expensive: there's a cleaner not even a block away that's cheaper per item. However, for the in house cleaning and the lack of any flaws outside of price, I'll stick to Sargent for the family business if I need something in a pinch. read more

Crazy expensive. Dropped off a work dress with spots - was charged $20. Dropped off a tank top with spots, $12. Was told "extra spot charge". $35 with tax total for a simple sheath work dress and white tank top. Have taken things here before and it took two times to clean to get rid of spots, so hopefully my $35 is worth it. read more

I still come here on a weekly basis for basic dry cleaning, and all is still so, so great, particularly because they really pulled through on my wedding dress alterations. After having a negative experience at a local dress atelier, I thought I might not be able to get my dress altered (in 2 months time) without completely breaking the bank. I brought my dress here, on the verge of tears, thinking I would wear a baggy wedding dress. The owner said not to worry, she could get my alterations done in less than 2 weeks. She pinned the dress herself, taking note of everything that I wanted, and thoroughly discussing every option. She assured me my dress would be perfect, and 10 days later, right she was! My dress fit exactly how I wanted it to, and there was no need for further fittings or alterations. The price was not cheap, but much, much more palatable than most places. This was a no frills experience; no champagne or water, no pedestal with flattering lighting, no 3-way mirror, and no room to bring your wedding party, as their dressing room is tiny. If you're okay with skipping amenities and just getting every little thing that you asked for done correctly, then this should be your spot. The owner pinned my gown herself while also helping other customers pick up and drop off their dry cleaning. She was warm, enthusiastic, and even offered me her sweater when I got a chill from the door opening. They also altered my fiancé's tuxedo to perfection. Very reliable and friendly service. I brought in a bridesmaids dress to get tailored (it was quite a bit too big for me). Being last minute, as I usually am, I had to rush the tailoring...the first place I called acted like one week was ridiculous to request alterations. When I called Sargent Cleaners, she said, "no problem," and actually finished the dress before I even needed it just in case we needed to make any finishing touches. We didn't! It fit great and she did a really clean job taking the dress in. My only minor complaint would be that she stabbed me a little with a pin while she was initially fitting me. Ouch! She apologized profusely and said it doesn't happen often at all! The total cost of alterations on the dress was $83. I'm satisfied! read more

I had this place do plenty of alterations for me previously (hemming trousers, taking in the waist, etc.) so I felt comfortable asking if they could add a simple button-hole to the lapel of my suit, so I could wear it with a flower. They gladly said yes to the job. What I got was the most butchered alteration job I've ever seen in my life. The button hole I got... 1) was HALF the size as the rest of the suit button-holes (even through I specifically asked for the new hole to match the rest) 2) was not even aligned with the rest of the button-holes 3) was not even close to the same color (they used a grey thread when the suit and other button-holes were all navy) 4) looked half completed, with lose threads everywhere. And for a button-hole that looked like a just drew a knife into my suit, they charged me $25. I'm sure that they dry clean fine, but if you need an alteration on a garment that is any more difficult than hemming a pair of trousers, please look elsewhere. read more

I went to Sargent Cleaners to have a dress altered prior to a big event. The woman who pinned it as I explained what I wanted couldn't have cared less what I was asking for, and instead said that the tailor would take care of it. This gave me pause as I thought she was the person doing the work, and I should've followed my instincts to take it somewhere else. Fast forward a week, I didn't receive a call when the dress was ready, I had to call them. I couldn't make it in the day before my event to pick it up, so I had to get it the day of. Big mistake. I tried it on and it was lopsided and the fabric pulled in so tightly I could barely bend over. Folds of fabric were left and bunched oddly off of my thighs so it looked like i had wings. The clerk heard my audible gasp and asked if everything was alright. I said no, and stepped outside to show her how it was wrong, not just wrong but practically ruined. She said she'd call the tailor to come and fix it before my event, but she wouldn't be there until 4, so I'd have to come in for a remeasure when she arrived. As if that wasn't bad enough, she opened the curtain on the dressing room as I was changing to tell me this. No jeans on and no knocking, she just whipped the curtain open and started talking to me and into the phone at the same time. I was so embarrassed. I said not good enough and left with the dress to take it to another tailor to see if they could salvage it. The other tailor worked a miracle and let out the fabric in the bodice, and undid the shoddy work. I wore the dress to the event, but the other tailor pointed out that evidence of the stitching work previously done at Sergant's still showed through. Would not go back there. read more

I started using Sargent years ago when I lived in Glover Park. I have since moved across town and have tried tons of other dry cleaners and alteration services and all have been awful compared to Sargent. Although it requires a drive, I still use them. Unfortunately, I think I'm going to be breaking up with Sargent Cleaners for the following reasons: 1. The prices are exorbitant (especially for alterations), and the recent renovation makes it pretty evident that this is not a "lean" business. I have a lot of respect for small businesses (I work for one, myself) but the extra dough should go to operating costs and employee pay, not hardwood floors. Maybe I'm being unfair, but if my boss didn't help me with my dry cleaning, I'd be bankrupt. 2. On my last visit here, I was trying on a too-big skirt in the dressing room (waiting to be pinned) and another customer came in to pick up her cleaning. One of her favorite blouses had been misplaced. The manager offered to offset to costs of replacing it, but the customer pointed out that it was one-of-a-kind. I know that mistakes happen, but I have a lot of handmade and vintage clothing that is truly irreplaceable. I don't want to risk it being lost. 3. I feel like the pricing scale is not always done honestly. When they give you your ticket (when you drop off your clothes), they fold it up so that you cannot see the price until you've walked away. If you ask for the total before they print out the ticket, you get the "run-around" and they avoid spilling the number. More importantly, however, the tried to overcharge me by about $25 last time I picked up. (My pick-up ticket read $135; the final cost came to $160. I talked them back down to $135, but it's hard for me to trust a company that engages in such dishonest practices.) Have they ever ruined an article of my clothing? No, but on a couple of occasions they have failed to remove small stains from my clothing. Have they ever altered an article of my clothing incorrectly? Yes. Are they still worth the extra money? I used SC exclusively for regular laundry in Glover Park for the past 1.5 years. I've gotten consistently good results. I use them even though they are slightly more expensive for laundry than Georgetown Valet. But, I don't like how they advertise themselves as "organic", so I don't ever use them for dry cleaning. Favorite dry cleaner in the DMV area. I used to live nearby but have since moved to Arlington. Sargent Cleaners is worth the commute. They always do a great job, and all cleaning is done on the premises. I took all my dry-cleaning here for a few months and they did an average job and were convenient. On the last trip, one of my returned shirts pretty much had every front button missing when I took out of the plastic. I took the shirt back to sergeants, explained what happened and asked them to repair it for free. The man behind the counter started yelling right away, denying that buttons would ever fall off a shirt from being laundered, and refused to fix them. I just got back from being yelled at for thirty minutes by the owner of the store for pointing out that the tailoring job on the $300 dress I dropped off was fine, but that they'd put three stains mysterious black stains down the front of the bridesmaids dress I'm supposed to wear in two days. That's right. Yelled at. Not offered a discount, an apology or dry-cleaning. Screamed at for thirty minutes. Now, I am a generally nice person. I did not come out of the room and freak out at him. I said, "Hey, the tailoring is good, but there are some spots on the dress that weren't there before... do you know what that is?". His response? Yelling and calling me an idiot and saying that it was impossible that it happened there because the dress never touched any surfaces at the tailor shop (not sure how that is possible, but sure!) and then threatened to take the dress away when I pointed out that it had actually never been anywhere else where it could get stained. So I guess go there if you want to be treated like shit? I'm going to choose somewhere (anywhere) else, especially for an only mediocre tailoring job. If I could give zero stars, I would. read more

Their price points are not clear, so when you return to pick up your items be prepared for a higher "future price" and when you ask for clarification be prepared to hear "What is your point?". I totally got "taken to the cleaners" today on a pair of shoes I asked to have resoled. Yes- the whole thing. I understand what it means to get my shoes resoled. However, I don't expect to be charged $100. I usually get my shoes resoled for $50-$60. The person who took my shoes after I explained what I wanted done said it would be about $80 which was really pushing it but I accepted for convenience sake. It ended up being $95 and the person who rung me up didn't care if I was quoted $80 or if it maybe mattered that they were charging an exorbitant price on a Vibram resole. Maybe not listening to your customers and sticking to your guns on exorbitant prices are amusing to certain people. I don't find it amusing because I work hard for $100, especially on my feet, and will take my business elsewhere. read more

While i am fine with 2 day service occasionally i've needed next day and even same day cleaning and if you can get there before 10am they can usually make it happen. I had been a loyal customer of Sargent Cleaners for more than 20 years, and their prices weren't a factor when I had a job. Unfortunately, I lost my job three years ago, and have to watch my pennies carefully. Not too long ago, I had two shirts (cotton, long-sleeved) cleaned at Sargent, and the price was $15.00+ (and this included a so-called 15% discount for living in a nearby apartment building). Today, I decided to take the same two shirts to Georgetown Cleaners to see what they would charge. When they told me $9.93, I knew that I would never go to Sargent's again; the price discrepancy was just too great. So, as good as Sargent's is, it is simply over-priced. read more

Very friendly, terrific customer service, and great alterations! Not cheap, but neither are their results. Any dry cleaning I have that is important, stained, or complicated I bring to Sargent. I was in line behind a very demanding customer the other day, and the owner met each of her demands with a smile and an accommodation. It was exemplary customer service. They recently altered my son's ski jacket, did a beautiful job, and were careful to leave extra material available to let the sleeves back out when he grows. read more

THERE ARE SEVERAL ALTERATIONISTS ON WISCONSIN - PLEASE USE SOMEONE ELSE. Deeply disappointing service. I had the sleeves removed from a blouse and the tailor completely botched the job - cutting too far into the body of the shirt and making the shirt irreparable. I brought an example tank-top style blouse in with the original garment and the woman at the counter, to my knowledge, fully understood what I needed. Then, upon pick up, the man behind the counter (presumed owner) was lecturing me about how the two garments were different - obviously. After showing this man how my brazier is fully on display when wearing the altered garment - he still would not back down on the price. I decided to try this place out for the first time, and I will never be going back. The people inside were friendly and the prices for laundering were decent. Once I got home and inspected my clothes, I noticed that the ironing was completely atrocious. It was such a poor job that I (a male college freshman) could have done a better job. The made disgusting little fold marks all over my collars and on other parts of the shirt, and there was zero attention paid to detail. It was a rushed job, and not even a good one at that. I am furious that on my college budget I threw away money on such an awful service. If this place can't even iron, how can you expect them to take care of anything else properly? Avoid this business. I took laundry there after I gave up on Georgetown Valet. I guess they are about the same quality, which is not great. I had them dry clean a jacket and tighten the buttons. It was too expensive and I am almost positive that they didn't actually tighten the buttons. I asked about the buttons but really they weren't very helpful. I didn't give them too much of a chance after that. I went back to Georgetown Valet, and I am still lokking for a place to take my clothes and not fear that they will be ruined. read more

stopped in today to ask how much it would approximately cost to fix a certain shoe of mine (i went through detailed lengths to explain my shoe and it's problem as well as size of do-dad that had fallen off, material, etc.)...so one lady who has no clue as to what i was saying passes me to another. meanwhile a guy comes and asks me what i would like, and i explain. he says that he would need to "see the shoe." BUT then, when i said it was a very simple issue and that i needed an estimate before carting my shoes around town, he says that he HAS NO IDEA about prices because the shoe repair person (they send their shoes out) prices the whatever-was-fixed AFTER the fact and he said this in a manner like, "yeah, are YOU retarded, don't we all pay for services rendered with a mysterious price tag to be announced after the fact..." i mean what a DOUCHE. i would not waste my time or money here...these people are OBVIOUSLY out to rip you off. i wish they had no business and would give it to the people up the street--at least they don't throw attitude around as if customers didn't matter. oh, and i don't think they'll steal your money either. The owner of this place is very rude and he tried to deceive me and charge me more money for having my jeans shortened. I took a pair of dark blue jeans with hems in yellow thread and I asked him to use the same colour thread when making a new hem. Instead of charging me $16, which is a price for having jeans cut, he wanted to charge me $25 for asking for the same colour thread. 9$ more for yellow thread? Is it made of gold? When I asked him about it, he claimed that I had asked for the original hem. I had never heard of this before, I don't know what it is and I do not care what my jeans look like on the inside. So he basically translated "same colour thread" into "original hem" because that suited him. After I explained this to him, he offered to give me "$5 discount," which is not a discount at all, but rather giving me back the money he tried to steal. I'm very disappointed with such dishonesty.
