Have you ever had a hard-boiled egg coated with minced lamb, served in a delicious tomatoey sauce?…read more- No, well then it's about time to vist the Indian Ocean on Holloway Road... In fact, I am much obliged to Patrick R. , who has written the first Yelp review about the Indian Ocean and who - with his wonderfully enticing writing - had made me want to come check out this place asap. And finally, last night I managed to come here with a bunch of friends to put his whooping recommendation to the test: yes, yes, and yes! It is as good as he says! These are the dishes that I would heartily recommend you to try: the chicken dish with dried apricots and cashew nuts; the above-mentioned hard-boiled egg coated in minced lamb; as well as a very simple, but well-spiced dal side dish (the slight hint of cinnamon went very well with the autumny weather). I am so glad I found this place, as I no longer have to venture all the way to Whitechapel's Tayyabs for a really good Indian meal!!!

Now the following…read morestatement may spark some controversy, but there is a contingent of us that believe this to be the best Indian in London. That's right, you can forget Brick Lane, and head straight to The Ocean. Situated in between Camden Road and Parkhurst Road, it's pleasant exterior columns give it a bit of class juxtaposed against its surroundings. The atmosphere inside is pleasant, and refined, and the staff are always at hand with a smile. They've recently remodelled, which you will notice from the clean and simple interior decoration. They have a full bar, and serve favourite beers like Cobra and King Fisher. Personally I'd go for a mango lassi, which doesn't have any alcohol, but is so good you'll hardly miss it. Now for the food, which is spectacular. All the sauces are made from scratch by the resident chef. (He's actually taken a friend back into the kitchen and showed him the ins and outs of his cooking, and with great pride the fact that all his sauces are made on location.) Whatever you fancy, it is going to be good. My favourite is the Murgi Tika Masala, but I've tried a host of different things, and have never been had a bad experience. Not sure what to order? Ask the staff, as they can steer you in the right direction. Whatever you chose to get, I'm sure it will be good. After the meal is over you may be lucky enough to be greeted by the chef, who prides himself on checking on his guests. As they are all his recipes, this is certainly a treat. After a few visits you may even begin to feel like a regular, as they are quick to recognize return customers. All in all, you can't go wrong at the Indian Ocean.

I asked the waiter the difference between the regular butter chicken and the British style and he said the regular has more of a medium spice while British style is sweeter. We like spice so we chose the regular version. It wasn't spicy overall but they top with fresh chopped green chili on top which was nice. I believe you can ask for them to make it more spicy. The family next to us was Indian possibly and they had a side of green chilis, red onions and lemon. I was kind of jealous. I thought maybe I should ask for a side of that too. But I figured I would be nicer to my stomach this time around. So we split one curry and it doesn't come with any rice or bread. We ordered 2 different breads, one garlic naan and one tandoori Roti. It was perfect amount for us to share. My husband probably could've eaten a bit more but we were going to get dessert somewhere else after. Both the breads were beautiful. We also had the vegetable samosa and they was really good. I love the dough they use. I've had different dough versions of samosas and maybe it's regional dependent, I've had ones that's more of a pie crust thickness and thin eggroll wrapper thickness. But theirs was a perfect balance. It was almost like the Chinese eggroll wrapper thickness. But the filling and chutneys were nice also. I wish I was able to try many more dishes!

I came here with my team the other night. The first hour of our experience was pretty horrendous,…read morewith our reservation being somehow completely useless as we waited for about 30 minutes for our table. Apparently some people had been sitting at our table for far too long and they could not get them to leave. We ended up being crammed into to a far-too-small table right next to them, and I could see why. They were absolutely hammered. One girl had a cackle so loud that after she left, no joke, a few of us could hear our ears ringing. It was so bad that when they did finally leave, an hour after we got there, the entire dining room (downstairs) applauded. A round of applause for a departure! I have never heard such a thing. It was funny as hell. The servers offered up some "free" starters and drinks, but then put them on the bill afterward. Nice. The only reason my review isn't one star at this point was because I had had a better experience the first time I came here, and the food, while nothing too original, is still decent. That said, if this place is busy, I would recommend you move on and go somewhere else. You will probably suffer through poor service and no accommodation for it.

It's not a big restaurant--more on the small side--but it was full of customers. We got a two-seater table near the bar. I wouldn't say I was thrilled about the spot, but hey, at least we got a table! The place has a typical South Indian restaurant vibe and décor. We ordered: * Koli Melagu Varuval (Chicken Pepper) * Aadu Biryani (Mutton Biryani) The food was really good. Or maybe we were just super hungry? Just kidding--every dish was full of flavor and absolutely delicious. The staff were organized and polite. A Night to Forget at Princess of India - Disrespect, Neglect & Disgrace:…read more I have dined at many restaurants, but never have I experienced such blatant disregard as I did at Princess of India in Morden, London. If this is how they treat their guests, I can only hope the real princesses of India showed more grace than the so-called hospitality here. The restaurant had only three groups - a party of eight, two friends at another table, and us. And yet, despite the light crowd, we were treated as if we were invisible. No welcome, no warmth, no service. The waiter passed by us repeatedly, without so much as a glance, while tending to the other tables. Was it exhaustion? Indifference? Or something far uglier--blatant discrimination? The middle-aged, fair-skinned manager (who looked more suited for the gym than the hospitality industry) barely acknowledged our presence. He never visited our table, never asked if we needed anything, and at the end he did but when we left, he didn't even muster a simple 'thank you' or 'goodnight'--basic courtesies in any decent restaurant. To make matters worse, tables were left unclean, staff were more interested in wiping glasses and bowls and disappearing into the kitchen than actually tending to guests. It made me wonder: if they can treat us this way, what would they do to the citizens of this country? Look, I understand hospitality is demanding. Long hours, constant service--but this was just a buffet. All they had to do was clear plates and check in on customers, yet even that seemed too much to ask. Respect should be given to all, regardless of nationality or race. What we experienced was beyond disappointing--it was insulting. This was, without a doubt, the worst night we've had at a restaurant, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. If you value basic human decency, avoid this place.
