I went to Santosa with a friend for lunch on a recent Saturday. I was excited to try their food, which I'd heard was lovely, and sign up for a yoga class.
I arrived before my friend, and thought the space was beautiful. A young woman was working the drinks area, and another woman (the manager or owner?) was at an information desk, talking on the phone and sounding well put out. Since the manager seemed busy I asked the young woman how I might get some info on their pre-natal yoga. She had no idea what I was talking about, and eventually took me over to the information desk, where she handed me a timetable of their yoga classes. I thought I'd try catching the manager when she was off the phone.
When my friend arrived, we went to the counter (the manager was there by then) and asked if they still had food on, and if we could see a menu. No food menu was visible, and the young woman looked confused. She showed us a chalkboard and that had one food item on it, but said they were out of that. The manager then said to her (not us, she didn't even look at us) that they had one soup left. The soup sounded nice, so we both ordered it along with some hot drinks. We sat down and saw a couple approach the counter and order. We got our drinks (they were great) and as we waited for soup, we saw the couple who'd come in behind us get served big ol' plates of wraps, with falafel and hummus and salad. Where did that food come from??? From what secret menu??? Pretty soon we got our soup, and it was very yummy, but as a preggo lady I was left peckish and befuddled.
Before we left, I asked if I could have my drink put in a take-away cup, but the request was denied. I noticed the manager was back at the info desk, apparently free, but she had been so gruff and off-putting the whole time we were there, I didn't dare ask her anything about pre-natal yoga. There's more info on the website but I'm worried the vibe will be as harsh as it was in the cafe.
To sum up: The food and drink we got was great, but we were mysteriously denied food options, the manager seemed to be in a terrible mood, and I walked away hungry and scared of a yoga class. read more
