This was our beautiful view from cabin #7

Our family of 5 stayed at Santee Lakes to celebrate one of our children's birthday. Perfect destination! Relaxing, fishing, eating and relaxing some more. What more could someone ask for? If you are looking for a place to get away from the daily stresses of life this is the place for you. And don't forget the duck food. Thanks Santee lakes. See you next summer.

This place was awesome! The playground we were at was shaded, & there were plenty of picnic tables/seating available. Parking was ample, & the view is absolutely gorgeous-no matter which direction that you're looking. Great for a family day trip for sure, we had a great time & will be back to try out the splash pad before the summer is out.

Beautiful area in East County to take a walk, ride a bike, or even take the kids to the splash pad. There are paddle boat rentals and you can buy feed for the ducks. Walking around the lakes, there are intermittent areas of shade, picnics tables, and playgrounds. Dogs aren't allowed in the day use areas. Parking was $7.

My boyfriend and my favorite day date spot. Even on trips where we catch nothing we have a great time sitting at the lake and watching the ducks and geese. Tried the night fishing once, too many bugs for my liking but I always get eaten by mosquitoes anywhere I go. Overall definitely a great choice without having to go too far

We had a week long stay at the Santee Lakes RV Park. We had a spacious spot for our 42 foot motor-coach and Jeep (Spot 252). The grounds and restrooms were kept very clean. We enjoyed eating at the restaurant for breakfast and lunch. We were only about a 35 minute drive to see all of the attractions in San Diego. We would definitely stay here again in the future.

Today December 14. 2025, An adult man approached me and my children (ages 7, 8, 11), cursed at them unprovoked, and intimidated us. Park rangers only gave him a warning, yet he remained in the area while our family, including children with disabilities, had to leave for safety. I was told by park personnel that he is a regular visitor, so please be careful if you plan to visit Santee Lakes with kids. He should be removed to protect families.

I visit Santee Lakes every year with my family. We get a lake front tent site on lake 6 during the week. I avoid the weekends because it can get very loud. During the week it's very nice and quiet. Everything was nice and clean probably because we were the only ones tent camping at that time. Not a big fan of the 11 am checkout time. It's a little early for me. Especially when your tent camping and have to break everything down early. Took a trip to the pool and jacuzzi but left quickly because the pool was very cold and the jacuzzi was full of little kids. There is no supervision there so everyone does what they want. Not good since it clearly says 16 and over for the jacuzzi. For all of you that wanna bring your animals especially your small dogs you need to be very aware that there are LOTS of coyotes around and they are not scared. DO NOT walk your small dogs after dark and do not leave them alone for a minute. We witnessed 2 dogs taken within our 3 night stay at the lake. It was very quick. It's not the parks job to take care of your pets. We put our small dogs in a crate at night in our tent at sundown just to be safe. Lots of raccoons, possums and skunks so anything you want to eat the next day put it in your tent or a hard plastic box because it will be gone when you get up. If you like tent camping and night fishing right on the lake this spot is for you. We love night catfishing so this is the main reasons we go . Will most definitely be back next year .

Beautiful place to feed some ducks and go fishing at the ponds. We didn't catch anything but we still had a good time. General store had many helpful items for campers or fishing. Fun nostalgic push pop ice creams available for sale too. Bathrooms were super clean. Paddle boat rides available on weekends. Most ponds do not allow pets unfortunately. They are only allowed in the camping area at pond 6 and 7. Can't wait to rent a cabin out here next time and hopefully catch some trout or bluegill.

Internet is definitely not working this weekend. Very poor signal. Campground volunteers are remarkably working very hard to keep the grounds clean and ready for the next reservation to have a clean and tidy site. Lake is definitely a wonderful part of the camp experience.

Amazing place to just go for a walk or run. Great place to have a party or just enjoy nature.

Celebration of Life! A very beautiful setting under the Gazebo by the lake! our Celebration of life was perfect! Thank you!

So they have very cool paddle boats which our kids can't get enough of. And there are many playgrounds. And restaurants. Very cool spot. Worth checking out.

Ask the Community - Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve

Where can we park and is there a fee? If there is a fee do you have free street parking. Close by?

Hi the parking fee per carload is $4 on weekdays and $7 on weekends. You can also park on the street and walk in at one of our 3 access gates.

Can you bring your own SUP and are there any restrictions?

If you are referring to a stand up paddleboard, there is no bodily contact with the water allowed (it is recycled water). The only watercraft allowed are our pedal boats. I hope this answers your question :)

Are the bathrooms clean and sanitary?

Hi David, our restrooms are very clean. We have volunteers that clean them throughout the day.

I have reservations this weekend and saw a post about putting a fence up that was asked to be taken down. I have booked two dogs coming with us and we use a large fence outside our RV also. IS THIS GOING TO BE A PROBLEM?

Hi Suzanne, we do not allow pet fencing in the campground. If you have any questions please give the Reservations Team a call and they will be happy to go over pet policies with you. 619-596-3141 Monday-Friday 9:00AM-5:00PM.

I'm planning to have a bbq just for the day/evening, do i need to reserve a picnic site?

You are welcome to come and try to grab a site that is not reserved, but if your reserve a picnic site you are guaranteed a spot. It really depends if you are coming on the weekend or weekday. You can call the Reservation Team at 619-596-3141.

Do you offer long term stay for trailers/rvs?

Yes, give the office a call 6196-596-3141

Friends from work want to get together for a Barbeque. Is this a place where you can bring your own Barbeque to grill?

Yes you are welcome to bring your bbq! There are also some available at sites.

What evening and night time temperatures might I expect during mid July?

Air 86 in day 63 at night water temp around 70 or a bit higher :)

How far is the customer overnight parking space from the floating cabin # 1 ? Do we need a cart to bring our stuff to the cabin? Thank you.

Hi Jennifer! The parking lot is located very close to the dock (25ft). There is one shared utility cart provided for cabin guests, but if you would like to bring your own, that is certainly an option.

Are dogs allowed?

Hi Peggy! We have a dogwalk on the east side of Lake 6 and through the campground for public use. If you are staying in the Campground, dogs are allowed. The Day Use portion of the Park is a wildlife preserve, so pets are not allowed. (Lakes 1-5).

Are life vests included with the pedal boats in floating cabins?

Please check the deck box on the dock for life vests, if there are none inside (there should be) you may have to go the office and request some or talk to the Cabin's Host :)

Is the entrance to the park free?

There is a parking fee of $4 weekdays and $6 weekends.

How is the Wifi? I might be working during some of our trip and just curious if anyone has had success with the internet here?

We do have wifi with an average of 98%+ connectivity. Would you mind giving the office a call and they can tell you all about our wifi offerings? 619-956-3141 :)

Is there any cabin that is handicapped or wheelchair accessible?

Hello Rebeliza, Yes we do. Cabin 6 is completely ADA compliant with a very large deck with ramps.

Is there parking for an additional vehicle?

Hi Liz, if you are referring to the campground, yes there is parking for an additional vehicle at most sites. Some sites are smaller, so you may have to park a few feet away from the site. The fee is $2.20 per day for the additional vehicle.

Can you rent fishing poles at the general store?

Hi Kendra, we do not provide fishing pole rentals. We do have some to purchase, and the staff will most likely be able to help you set it up if necessary.

What is the longest i can stay - and the monthy rate?

Hi Robert! You can stay for 6 months. Rates depend upon the site. It would probably be helpful to call the office at 619-596-3141 and let them know what you are looking for, the length of your rig, etc. I hope this helps!

Is there a bike path nearby?

Yes. You can bike around each lake or the entire property

Do u have to camp over night to use the pool?

Hi Kari E. Yes the pools are for campers only. Thanks!

Can you camping here in tent?

We do have a limited number of tent sites. Please give the office a call 619-596-3141. Thanks!

Right now through March is the best time of year to visit in my opinion. Everything is beautiful and green and the flowers are starting to come out. I just hiked there this past weekend and it was spectacular. Over the course of the years when we have had super blooms, the mountainside on South Fortuna gets covered with poppies. We only saw a couple puppies here this past weekend but super exciting! With a little bit of rain in the near future forecast, the wildflowers are going to explode. So many different choices of trails to hike, but the south Fortuna Mountain is definitely my favorite. There's a kick ass section of over 200 stairs that goes straight up the hillside. That's the hillside where the poppies come out and it's one hell of a workout. It does get incredibly hot out here in the summer months. I would proceed with caution, if choosing outdoor activities here at those times. Tons of water, early morning or late evening start time for activities and adequate sun protection are a must. There is very little shade on these trails. I would also recommend always going with a buddy, just in case there's an emergency, and using the AllTrails app so you don't get lost.

We could've taken another trail instead. It's all good though. We enjoyed looking at the open areas with rugged hills and valleys while taking in the nature surrounding us. The fish cleaning area and sink were spotless. Trash on the ground or in the water was a rare sight to see. For $58 a night, it was a great value. I had a nice view of the lake, too. After I checked-in and set up the campsite, with my tent, and a small camping table, I rented a rowboat for $25, good for five hours, so that I could go fishing. The walk between the campground and boat rental dock is about 25 minutes each way if you're using the shorter route. The lake itself is very clean. Though I would not drink the water from Lake Jennings without a water filter, out of curiosity, I did put some of Lake Jennings' water into an empty water bottle to see how clear the water is. To my surprise, the water is completely clear! While I was sitting in the rowboat, I noticed lots of different birds--bluebirds, coots, ducks, geese, grebes, hawks, herons, hummingbirds, osprey, sparrows, vultures, woodpeckers, a few others I wasn't sure what they were. Anyway, after the first hour of having my rod cast, I didn't think I would catch anything and began to lose hope. However, as the afternoon started to cool, under the mature trees, off the shoreline, just opposite west of the rental dock, my fishing line started to pull. I quickly reeled the line in and realized that this was a pretty big fish. I dipped my net into the water, to get the fish into the boat. I used my handheld fish scale and the catfish weighed just over eight pounds!! (I used homemade bait made up of oatmeal and fresh garlic, rolled up in a peanut butter ball, that I prepared the night before. Also, the line was about 15 feet under water.) After I caught the one fish, I returned the boat, and went back to the campsite to clean and cook it. I cooked the fish using a portable camping grill grate--with a bit of olive oil, a liberal amount of fresh herbs (oregano, parsley, thyme, diced garlic, and Hungarian sweet paprika), and lemon--over an open fire, in the fire ring, that they have in each campsite. I used Lucela mesquite charcoal to fuel the campfire. The catfish was high quality and delicious--easily the best catfish that I have tasted, in my life, to date. At night, the campground was completely quiet, even on a weekend night. The night sky was nice, too. However, the lake's management is strict about having all campfires extinguished by 11:00 PM. The next morning, I had planned to cook breakfast, but decided to sleep in. At about 11:30 AM, I checked out. Checkout time is before 12:00 PM (noon). Overall, this was a perfect little one-night trip. Hopefully, I will return in the future. If I ever do come back, I'll probably make it a two-night trip, so that I can explore more of the lake, and maybe aim to catch a crappie, sunfish, or trout.
