We decided to do the tour in English, but they offer it in spanish and portugese as well. There was no one else on our English tour, so it became a private tour! The guide, Felipe, was very friendly and knowledgeable. He was able to answer all of our questions, and made us feel very welcomed. We did the "premium" tour, which is a basic one, but there are many options and levels you can choose from. We were able to try three different varieties, and ultimately bought some bottles at a discounted rate. The food in the little restaurant was very good. We just did a tapas style snack with a cheese plate, the melted cheese, and a bottle of wine. The staff in the bar area was very friendly as well. We did not have a car, so we used public transport to get back to the metro station. IT was easy, but if you are unfamiliar with the area, it could be a bit of a daunting task. Overall, I would happily do this experience again if I find myself in the Santiago area.

Before arriving I thought I was lost because I could not understand how that would be a winery in the middle of the city, but it was, and it is really beautiful. There's almost 150 years of history behind this place, and the facilities and wines show that. Wines: I loved the Sauvignon Gris, which I'd never tried before. It tasted like a crisper and even less sweet Sauv. Blanc. I really enjoyed the Chardonnay, which is unusual for me. I found the Syrah to be very good. But my favorite was the Lota red blend, which I had an opportunity to try in their wine bar, and absolutely worth the ~$15 for a glass (the bottles retail for about $80). Facilities: With that 150 years of history, there are buildings here that have survived from day one, severe Chilean earthquakes notwithstanding. The wines aren't aged in the original cellars anymore due to a mold that's taken hold in them, but because of Chile's antiquities laws, all of the original fermentation vessels remain, as well as endless rows of barrels down in the dungeons. There's an impressive combination of the new (modern PLC-controlled stainless steel processing equipment) on grounds hosting some 80+ year old vines that are still watered by redirected streams from the Andes. The People: Our guide Adriane was very informative and gave the tour in a Spanish that I could completely understand (the Chilean dialect can be difficult to those of us so used to the Mexican variety). The wine bar staff were very helpful in answering additional questions, and of course, providing that lovely, decanted Lota red. Getting There: An easy 30 min Metro ride from greater central Santiago, followed by a ~$5 cab ride, which is even cheaper if you get off at the right stop. And for leaving, an employee was giving ~$1.50 rides back to the Metro in her Chrysler minivan.

The only downside was that the restaurant on site is not available for dinners so you need to plan ahead for dinners. The wines are Viu Manent was excellent and we did tasting there as well which was complimentary if you're staying in the lodge. We also had short tour of the winery which was conducted via the horse carriage which was super cool. We also rode horses within the vineyards which was super fun! We didn't have a rental car so they helped us find a driver for our stay there as we were wine tasting in other wineries close by. The staff at the wine lodge is amazing especially the reception who can be contacted via WhatsApp during the stay, there's also complimentary breakfast at the cafe which is a short walk and lunch at Rayuela which is the restaurant on site. EL Mundo de Vino has a ton of wines and champagnes to choose from, as well as Whiskey, Vodka and Pisco of course Their prices are super competitive and the store is beautiful. Their wines are stacked high in the wooden displays making you feel like you have walked into an exclusive wine cellar. Their staff are all trained and knowledgeable about their wide wine selection. I always know when I walk in that one of their employees will be able to help me pick out something perfect for whatever the occasion. The store is open later too so no need to dash over after work. They also have special packing accessories for travelers who want to take wine home with them. Nothing better than bringing home a Chilean wine after a long trip away from home.
