Rare Byrd Salon - Cut by Sabrina

I've been going to Rare Byrd for several years now, and I've always felt like it was a special…read moreplace that I could relax and turn off my brain and be pampered. The space always has such cute decor and they add extra things for holidays. I chose Sabrina for my stylist because her instagram showed beautiful curly cuts and I've always had a difficult time finding someone who can cut my curly hair. Every time I come to Sabrina with a new idea, she's always been supportive, asking clarifying questions and has given me good advice on how my hair will handle whatever I want to do to it. She never pressures me to me do something differently and always makes me feel heard. When I said I wanted to go to purple hair back to blonde she spent extra time making sure every hint of my purple hair was gone and that I'd be happy with the results. I really appreciate Sabrina when she gives me her professional knowledge and helps me learn what is best for my hair.

It saddens me to write this after 2-3 years as a Rare Byrd customer. This review concerns only my…read morestylist, Sabrina Huish, not the salon or its other stylists. For years I enjoyed our conversations and valued Sabrina's experience. But lately she seemed rushed and distracted, sometimes moving on while I was explaining what I wanted. On several occasions, I was double-booked without advance notice. During one appointment, she was enthusiastically working on another client's elaborate, waist-length rainbow color, which she said had taken 6-8 hours. Much of my own service was handed to an assistant, and I felt like an afterthought. Creative color may be her passion, but clients requesting conventional colors and cuts deserve attentive service too. My mother had similar difficulties feeling heard and eventually stopped seeing her. I'd also had several bang trims that were too short, uneven, or unlike the reference photos I'd shown. I began trimming my bangs myself, but continued seeing Sabrina for color and overall cuts, with only occasional bang trims alongside a full haircut rather than at my monthly color touch-ups. Our history made me want to give her the benefit of the doubt. At my latest appointment, I wanted a lighter, more neutral brown and brought ideas about color levels. After color remover, Sabrina said lighter brunettes naturally have warmer tones. I respectfully explained that my natural medium brown hadn't had the reddish warmth I'd noticed since coloring it. She clarified that dyed hair behaves differently. I understood, and said I was happy to wait until another appointment for my preferred shade if that was healthier for my hair, even though I'd hoped to have it done before my birthday celebration the following week. I wanted to discuss a plan together. Instead, I felt increasingly uncomfortable with her annoyed expressions, laughter, and responses that came across as condescending. I'm quiet and dislike confrontation, so asking questions when someone seems irritated takes effort. I tried to stay friendly and assume she was having an off day. When she explained that the shades I'd suggested would be too dark, I thanked her and asked whether a level six would better suit my goal. I appreciated her advice and was happy to follow it. I wasn't challenging her expertise; I simply wanted input into decisions about my own hair. I also asked her to blend my bangs into face-framing layers. They looked fine at first, but at home I saw that one side had been cut much farther back than the other, leaving noticeably uneven thickness and an inconsistent transition into the layers. I politely texted asking if I could stop in the following Tuesday for a correction so my hair would look nice for my birthday. I simply explained the unevenness and asked for a fix. Her lengthy, feelings-focused reply stunned me. Although she offered other days to look at my bangs, she suggested I find another stylist because of my supposed "lack of faith in my professionalism and argumentative nature." She revisited our color discussion, said my questions made her uncomfortable and stressed, and wrote, "I also don't feel it's necessary to have to explain my reasoning for everything I do." What felt especially bizarre was the complete reversal of what I'd experienced. During the appointment, I had felt anxious about asking perfectly reasonable questions because her responses seemed defensive and dismissive. I'd consciously tried to remain respectful and friendly despite feeling uncomfortable, only to receive a message afterward portraying me as the argumentative one who had made her uncomfortable. Her account felt completely at odds with my experience. I'd paid approximately $400 and left my usual full tip despite the tension because I didn't want one uncomfortable appointment to overshadow years of good experiences. I don't expect perfection, and I respect a stylist's professional judgment. In fact, I want that expertise! But clients should be able to ask questions, express preferences, and collaborate with their stylist without being made to feel difficult. A professional consultation shouldn't require blindly agreeing with everything suggested. To be fair, Sabrina did offer alternative dates to correct my bangs. However, after receiving a message criticizing my behavior and explaining how uncomfortable I'd made her, I no longer felt comfortable returning to sit in her chair. What should have been a straightforward correction became an unnecessarily personal and unpleasant situation. After years of loyalty, this was an incredibly disappointing end to the relationship. I left with uneven bangs just before my birthday, and a simple request for help ended a years-long client relationship. I can no longer recommend Sabrina to clients who want to discuss their hair goals. I've retained our complete text exchange and would be happy to share it privately with salon management if they'd like to understand what happened.

The stylist I saw has since left this salon…read more Originally I emailed Sixteen Eighty Eight through Yelp with my formula and they confirmed they were able to do it, which was great news since I've had trouble finding someone who can follow my formula in Walnut Creek. They matched me with a stylist and I came in on a particularly cold rainy day. The first issue I noted was that they didn't use heat to process, which my formula calls for. Although I've had other salons use wet heat to treat, using no heat was unusual. Beyond that, I noted the stylist would make comments where the tone sounded friendly, but the words like, "your hair is so long, do you ever cut it," were a bit rude. By the end of the visit it was clear she didn't particularly like me, but my hair looked fine under the lighting, so I tipped well and left. What followed has literally never happened to me in the four years I've gotten full root coverage. The color leeched out of my hair - as in, within a few days, all coverage was gone. I don't know what she used, but after a week it didn't look like I'd gotten my hair done at all - my best guess is that because she didn't use heat, it didn't process correctly. I just don't know. I've sat on this review trying to decide how I feel about it, but I definitely always now confirm my formula has to be processed with heat and I've gone back to my old salon in Berkeley even though it's a bit of a drive.

I cannot recommend Avital enough. Just LOOK at the photos!! I'm pretty new to getting my hair dyed, and I'd been struggling to find a stylist who could get me as blonde as I wanted. I never felt blonde enough. I came in for a super complicated color correction and was honestly nervous, but Rachel listened to my concern and told me, so confidently, that she could make it happen. And she DID. I walked in with nearly 6 inches of black regrowth, banding where my hair had been bleached, and bleached hair mixed with dyed hair. There was SO much going on. Other salons told me it would take 10+ hours and multiple sessions. Avital did my ENTIRE color correction in about 6 hours, all in one session, which is insane for the type of hair I came in with. The girls worked together so efficiently, and Rachel got me as blonde as I ever dreamed of. And the best part? Going from a very dark base to nearly a level 8-10 blonde, I expected my hair to feel dry and damaged. Instead it was SO soft! I truly think it's because Avital uses amazing, high quality products and genuinely cares about hair health as much as customer satisfaction. The last time I bleached my hair at another salon, it came out less blonde and felt damaged and brittle, and it took months of aggressive hair care to get it healthy again. This time, none of that! To save me time and money, Rachel brought in two other stylists, Mozghan and Kaylie, to help foil my hair. Together they did in 2 hours what would have taken one stylist 4+. All three were so attentive, detail oriented, and VERY efficient, and they stayed on the same page the entire time. Rachel is the sweetest. She was kind and reassuring the whole appointment, and such a fun person to talk to. She went above and beyond to make me comfortable. She kept offering me snacks and drinks! After foiling, she did my roots, toned, and blow dried my hair. She even fixed my bangs (which I had cut badly a few weeks earlier) for free, and they look AMAZING. I've wanted this color for over 4 years. Most places quoted me over a thousand dollars, and Avital gave me affordable, high quality work. At checkout, Rachel didn't charge me for the haircut, and out of the 2-3 extra hours on top of the base price, she only charged me for one. I was so touched! After one short conversation with Rachel, you can tell she is truly meant for this work. She loves hair so much that it doesn't even seem like it's about the money. She just wants people to smile and feel good about themselves, and I left doing exactly that. I am SO happy with my hair, and I'll be coming back as a regular!
