Our Lady of Good Counsel High School

Our Lady of Good Counsel High School

After going to good counsel, I can say it's the worst catholic high school to send your child to…read more The "deans" are some of the rudest and careless people you will ever meet and i think everyone at the school would agree. There were times I would say hi to them, and instead of being nice, they would respond rudely or try to find something I was doing wrong. Yes, it is their job, but you can be decent about it. The rules are extremely strict, which caused me to feel anxious just walking into the school, scared I'd mess one thing up. They don't allow you to be on your phone, no matter what time of the school day it is. I received a detention (which is on Saturday mornings) because my mom was texting me about my grandmothers health, updating me on her surgery. They don't care what the reason is, even if it's something understandable. They block cell service throughout the school to prevent this, which is honestly scary if something were to ever happen in the building. The deans make it there lifes goal to shit on every student no matter when or where. Some teachers are very good at good counsel, but many are careless. I had teachers not grade my work for multiple weeks, which caused me to be stressed about my grade the whole quarter. Another thing is that the food is horrible. They make it seem so good during shadow visits, tours, etc. The food is of poor quality, and there were times it wasn't even warm. The school throws problems under the rug that involve staff that affect the students who go there, lying to everyone about the true reasons things happen to make the school seem better. Lying in public announcements and not valuing the catholic values is something good counsel does really well. Sure, they offer mass daily, but the staff lacks in truly keeping the values. The school supports homosexuality to a point where it seems more drastic than public schools. Supporting that as a school is something that should be implied, but the way good counsel does it is too much, which makes students feel uncomfortable. From hearing the staff is seriously considering gender nutural bathrooms and that they have pride flags in rooms within the school is something I do not think a catholic school should promote as much as they do. The future of this school does not look good if you are trying to send your child to a school to avoid these things, which is a reason I went there because they made it seem so different than it is during shadow days and tours.

Hiking trails, a creek, child-tended gardens, chickens, rolling hills for sledding, multiple playgrounds, and fresh air from being out in the countryside! Knowledgeable, passionate, hardworking, and kind educators who are experts in their craft in warm and inspiring classroom spaces filled with natural light. You could not find a more nurturing, stimulating, or respectful place for your child to grow. Alumni all over the DMV truly become misty-eyed when recalling their formative years at this school. We are in our fifth year at Mater Amoris, with children at the primary and elementary levels. As a mom of three and an AMI-trained Montessori guide, I am delighted that our family has found our place. We are excited and grateful about many more years to come at Mater Amoris Montessori School and in their wholesome and engaging school community!

The school has many special traditions, an excellent Montessori curriculum, and wonderful faculty and staff. Our oldest is now on the middle school program for seventh and eighth graders, and is excited to tell us about his day which is a rare treat from a pre-teen! Our younger is in the upper elementary class that includes 4th, 5th, and 6th grades, and he is learning new skills daily while having the opportunity to help younger students while himself getting support from older students. The setting is idyllic and in winter the sledding hill is legendary. Highly recommend Mater Amoris.

Our son's teacher resigned after the first week of school, but the school continued to tell us she was sick for two months. Our son came home with a letter informing us that his teacher resigned, we were informed that a substitute had been in the class along with a teacher aid. Our son was assaulted by another student stabbed in the eye with a pencil. The school failed to notify us of this incident. My husband was informed of this incident when he arrived to pick our son up from school, he was directed to the nurse's office without any explanation. The student assaulted six other children in the kindergarten class before being transferred to another class, where he continued assaulting other children. Our son came home and informed me another student took her scissors and placed them on his neck and threatened to cut his throat. I took my son to school the next day and requested a meeting with his teacher, whom didn't seem concerned nor did she have any type of plan of corrective action. My husband and I withdrew our son and enrolled him in a private school. I returned to the school to collect his supplies and belongings, the substitute teacher advised me that the teacher who resigned took all the children's school supplies when she left. I was only given one pack of pencils, and four boxes of crayons. We spent at least $60.00 on school supplies. I also noticed the kids were just coloring pictures when I was collecting my sons school supplies. Our son attended this school for two months and never came home with homework. When we would ask him how his day was, he always said he didn't do anything. We understand now why he wasn't learning anything. This is a huge disservice to our children and to the parents who trust Prince George's County Public Schools to educate our children.
