Worst school. The kids are extremely rude. I was eating a game and their kids were cussing out the other players and trying to start fights!

Julia Brown Schools - Silver Spring Campus

Julia Brown Schools

I wanted to share my experience with Julia Brown School regarding my daughter's time there…read more Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing and left us feeling that the environment was not supportive of helping children adjust and thrive. When my daughter was placed in a new classroom, she had been there for less than a full day before we began receiving calls asking us to pick her up because she was "not listening to instructions." As any parent knows, transitions to a new classroom can be challenging for young children. It typically takes time for them to feel comfortable with new teachers, classmates, and expectations. Instead of allowing her a reasonable adjustment period or working with us on strategies to help her settle in, the school seemed irritated by the situation and quick to remove her from the classroom. We were hoping the staff would demonstrate patience, professionalism, and a child-centered approach--giving her at least a week or two to adapt to the new environment. Unfortunately, that level of support and understanding was not demonstrated. Repeated calls to pick her up after such a short time in the classroom made it feel like the priority was convenience rather than helping a child succeed. Every child deserves educators who are willing to guide them through transitions with patience and care. We had hoped for a more supportive and professional approach from the school in ensuring that our child had the opportunity to adjust and thrive.

The teachers are phenomenal and the campus is clean and neat. School communications are clear and prompt, there's always someone there to answer questions or concerns. One of my favorite parts of JBS Silver Spring is the community. We have met life-long friends both for the kids and us parents. Often when a child leaves JBS Silver Spring, we stay in touch with the family since the kids build such a close bond. I can't imagine us being anywhere else, it's truly our dream school come true.

I give my highest and most heartfelt recommendation to the Family Academy of Bethesda. My son has…read morebeen here since he was just three months old and stayed until almost three years old, when unfortunately we had to move away due to work relocation. If it weren't for that, we would have loved for him to stay here as long as possible. It's hard to put into words how incredible this place has been for our family. From the days when he could barely lift his head, to learning to walk, talk, sing, and share stories about his day, we've watched him grow into a happy, curious, and confident little boy--all thanks to the loving care and nurturing environment of Family Academy. He not only learned language and knowledge, but also good manners and a true love of learning. The teachers are absolutely amazing--kind, patient, and so easy to communicate with. My son is a slow and picky eater, yet they always gave him extra time and gentle encouragement. They care for each child as if they were their own. The administration team is just as wonderful; they know every child by name and engage with them warmly every single day. What makes Family Academy so special is not only the quality of education but the genuine love and attention they give to every child. The environment encourages exploration, creativity, and curiosity about everything in the world. I could see every day how happy my son was here.I am deeply grateful for everything the Family Academy has given to our son and to our family. This school is truly a treasure in the community, and I would recommend it wholeheartedly to any parent.

Under the center's care, my son truly blossomed. Well before we expected, he was singing songs to us, identifying letters, counting, and more. And most indicative of this center's awesomeness--my son was always so happy to go to school. It also meant a lot to me that the staff and teachers made genuine, impactful efforts to include our family's culture alongside mainstream culture, for example welcoming us to send in books about our holidays, directly engage the class in activities, and share ideas for the teachers to use. Would recommend Family Academy to anyone!!

Lowell created an individualized learning plan that quickly helped her improve her reading and math skills. She found new confidence thanks to the caring, supportive teachers and staff. We've seen her dance in front of the whole school, perform at piano recitals, speak publicly, tryout for teams, and make many new friends. The family community is wonderful. It's the kind of school we'd been hoping to find for so long.

Lowell has done so much to support our kids academically and socially, including during the difficult pandemic years. Our boys love going to school, and they have a vocabulary to express their feelings in amazing ways. The teachers are first-rate and the small classes and first-name basis with everyone has helped our kids feel like they are part of a real community that has a set of progressive, shared values. The campus is awesome, too, from the classroom spaces to the beautiful outdoor front field and playground spaces, plus being across the street from Rock Creek park. I was a public school kid, but my wife sold me on the benefit of a K-8 school, and I'm so glad she did. We are so glad we chose Lowell, and we know our kids will see benefits from the school throughout their lives.

As a father with a strong demeanor regarding education, I could not be happier with BMS. Now,…read morelet's be honest, your child and mine will not finish pre-school as a rocket scientist. However, he or she will learn basic math, use of a computer, a little French, self-awareness & independence, and start learning how to read and write. In fact, by age 4 most students can legibly write their name and count to 50+. This is only possible due to the loving and nurturing way each teacher engages with each student to build a desire to learn. I can't ask for anything better! My daughter is currently finishing her second year and will return to finish out her 3rd year (Kindergarten). I also intend to send my son once he is old enough for pre-school. Also, the after school care is run by an incredible group of educators that have a tender heart for children, and the school provides "extra classes" ranging from soccor to martial arts to dance and yoga.

The flexible hours and aftercare enrichment activities are helpful if you're juggling other kids' schedules and work. We've been so impressed and are so glad we happened upon this magical place!

The kids are generally exposed to other languages because the language teachers are "present throughout the summer program" and "language exposure is offered through basic words/phrases, songs and cultural exploration". Though I would prefer formal language instruction during the summer, I realize they're aiming to work with a mixed level group because some of their campers aren't the same kids they have during the school year where language learning takes place more often and more formally. In other words, some children come to the camp without knowing any other language besides English and each week different children may be enrolled. I ask my child all the time if they enjoy the camp and always inquire about the details of their day. My child has nothing but good things to say. They always come home with arts, crafts, and tales of adventures in the pool, playground, or specialty events such as the occasional soccer, puppet show, or whatnot. The main reason I enrolled my child is because they were very bored at their school-year daycare, started to get into a bit of trouble because of it, and complained about the other kids being "mean" and hitting sometimes and all of that. I knew my little one needed a change of pace so I sought to put them into what looked like a strong activity-based and high-engagement summer program. My child needs a lot of constant engagement, stimulation, and encouragement and my little one is certainly receiving that at Spring Bilingual. As I shared before, my child speaks with excitement about their day and has nothing but good things to say about the teachers and other campers. This camp has been a very good fit for my child right now; albeit the lack of formal language instruction. The staff is friendly, and my energetic child has made friends and is happy to be dropped off each morning. Each day my child comes home safe and tired.
