Aspen, the owner exceeded my expectations. She took care of everything (set up, beautiful decorations, all the entertainment, etc.) and the kids had an amazing time. My daughter wanted a frozen-themed birthday party and it was perfect. Elsa herself was there (all arranged by Aspen!) My daughter also attends Evolutions preschool and we couldn't be happier... She is a devoted dancer that has trained for most of her life, and it shows. The House Dance classes she has taught have changed my life in regards to dance. Super high energy, we learn a ton of drills for footwork that you can practice at home, a true foundation class. Donna really pays attention to all the students in the class and teaches for each person at their level, and then will challenge you based on where you are at without pushing you away by forcing too much of a challenge. She teaches house dance sometimes as part of the Wednesday night street dance series, which changes the theme focus pretty much weekly right now. This is one of the only adult dance studios that I've been to that has classes focused on Technique in dance. At least, Donna's classes focus on that a lot. Maricella's Hip-hop class is also fantastic here; You get a longer class here than you would at other studios in town for your money, and you repeat the choreography a LOT, but heads up she never does it to a specific song (just ongoing to a mix of hiphop songs). It's a great practice for drilling choreography memory regardless, but you are not dancing for the emotional choreography within a specific song. It's similar to her class held at NWDP but there are much fewer teens here, if any at all. There are a diverse range of people that show up to this hiphop class which is also cool. I think it's among the easier hiphop classes in Portland for beginners, noting you would be expected to keep up with remembering a choreography, and despite being long you drill it over and over so much that you'll get it if you try. She is a great teacher too, if she notices most of the class is having trouble with a specific movement she breaks it down over again.

For the very little kids (under 5), it's less structured because they are so little and wiggly, but the progression as the kids move into ages 5-6, and then ages 6-8 is totally seemless and more structured as they age. If you're looking for strict scary or pushy, this isn't the place for you! Kathleen is hardworking and encourages the kids to be as well, but there's no undue pressure for perfection or mean disciplinary nonsense. It's just a friendly and magical place to dance and have fun!

Both my daughters have flourished under the current instruction at Inspire! All of the instructors have provided tremendous leadership and growth for my dancers. Can there be a rough day occasionally? Sure, but that's life! 99% of the time my girls come out of class having worked hard and had fun. This is definitely a pre-professional studio, and the dancers are treated as if this can be their profession after graduation. Their competitive teams are amazing, but I adore that the focus isn't only on competition. The technique classes are FAR more important. Participation in The Nutcracker is also a must! I moved my daughter to Inspire because she was ready for a more rigorous dance education. She was…read morethere for not quite a year (one season), and overall, it was a very negative experience. The dance instruction IS rigorous, but we found it to be anything but inspiring. A harsh environment is cultivated, and it is not at all unusual for students to be humiliated in class and made to cry. There are favored dancers, who are all in the highest level, and the levels below that are generally treated pretty harshly. There is a level of controlling-ness (for example, dictating across the board that all students must wear a certain brand of pointe shoes, regardless of what may work best for each individual student) that is ridiculous. My teenage daughter's confidence was pretty much destroyed during her time at Inspire; although she was accepted into three prestigious summer intensives, she believes that she's "a bad dancer" thanks to the messages she received at Inspire. Heavy on criticism, sometimes downright mean, skimpy on encouragement. I don't typically write Yelp reviews, but I feel compelled to share our experience on this one. We are relieved to be moving on from Inspire.
