It really is mostly a location thing and I had to prioritize another (also great) workout studio near my home that I could walk to in a shorter time that it took me to drive or ride my bike to Pulse. But about this place: I love that you can take classes back to back so you can get both strength training and cardio out of the way. And they even have wonderful recovery/muscle-repair type classes as well. Anyway, I miss Pulse! I hope their schedule and my schedule align sooner than later because I would love to go back and dance my butt off!

I decided to try a drop in class with my cousin while I was there, just to get the full experience. The Studio is a small space but it's immediately recognizable on the street due to the cute window decorations and signage. Inside it's amazing, and has a bazaar like feel to it. You almost feel like you're being transported into a studio set off the beaten path in the Middle East. My dance teacher for the evening was very welcoming and made us feel at home immediately. The actual dance space is very spacious and beautifully adorned with a hanging carpet/tapestry and perfectly lit with ample space to move. The class flew by quickly and I was sad to have to leave. I again thanked all the students and instructor again for taking us in only for the evening. I left with a cool new T-shirt (yay shopping!) and a big grin on my face. If it wasn't for my real life I would move to Portland and start classes right away. What's not to love about this place? For anyone in the area interested in belly dance, this is the cream of the crop!

I go for the most fun, wonderful, queer-friendly hip-hop dance class in the entire world, Swagger. The teacher is probably the most patient, upbeat dance teacher I've ever encountered - you can tell she really loves what she does and so do her students. I recommend it, and any other class at Center Space, to beginning dancers and more advanced dancers of all stripes!

The studio itself is beautiful and cozy with lots of mirrors and a nice seating area. My first beginners class with Thalia I was the only student! What could have been horrifying and awkward turned out amazing. Thalia is a very knowledgable instructor- patient, supportive and incredibly sweet. She will push you through and not let you get away with half-hearted moves. :-) On top of all this, the environment in just fun. The classes are small and everyone gets a pole. The program specifically encouraged attendants to arrive an hour early to enjoy drinks. Staff was incredibly awkward and passive-aggressive. I don't know where they expected people to congregate, there was hardly any room at all in the lobby, and the show is completely sold out. I left before I had a panic attack, and came back about 10 minutes before the show to find a seat, in a completely crowded and full theater, great good for them! The show itself was brilliant. But I had to endure 10 adjacent giggling wiggling man-children kicking my seat and causing the whole row to shake. Again, they're not the venue's fault, but when a show is full to capacity like this, the seats being latched together will really try your patience. I did see a woman in front of me stand up and look all around to see if she could find another empty seat, before asking the man next to her to stop leaning on her. Kudos. If I could offer any suggestions, the venue should have at least some signage telling guests where they can and cannot go in the building if the staff will not open their mouths even once. Also, if you're going to ask people to come early for drinks, don't put them in a secret cooler somewhere, have an actual bar set up. In the room where people are allowed to be. Atmosphere: 2/10

I've consistently taken two types of dance classes with Diana - a dance fitness class and my FAVORITE, a sensual movement class. Diana is a fun and encouraging teacher who lets her students embrace the dance moves in their own unique way. There is no pressure for perfection in her classes...she's all about her students giving it their all and finding their own power and beauty through dance - however that may look! I followed Diana over the VMAC's new facilities and am impressed so far. The price of $10 for a drop-in seems very reasonable with packaged deals available. The staff at the front desk are very friendly and welcoming. And the space seems to be newly renovated. The Dance Fitness class (currently every Thursday at 5:30pm) is the most fun I've had while working out. You'll FEEL THE BURN but also have the biggest smile on your face the whole time. Fun music and fun moves. I am hoping that Diana will be able to offer her Sensual Movement dance class at this space ASAP. It's seriously the best class EVER. We learn a choreographed dance across the span of 2-3 classes and while my body doesn't quote move like an MTV music video big-booty queen, I FEEL LIKE ONE! So much fun getting your 'sexy' on with women who are there only to support one another. VMAC - please hook it up with this class!

This, after scrambling up a pedestal about "Safe Dance Spaces", can leave you confused if all you're looking for is a dance experience. Integrity isn't their strong suit and neither is instruction in dance but hey! If you're looking to pay for in-group status, you've come to the right place
