BIPOC PROGRAM... WHAT THEY WON'T TELL YOU: Months ago after watching their Nightmare Before…read moreChristmas event, I looked into their dance studio and learned about a BIPOC Program they offer. All I knew about it was there was a waitlist. So when over half a year goes by and we get the call that we've been asked to "audition" for their program, I had trepidations because the fact that an audition was required for my 3 year old to do a dance class meant for toddlers seemed elitist to me. If I knew there was going to be an audition for this program from the beginning I would have never waited with baited breath for them to contact me. But since it was focusing on BIPOC students and we had waited so long I figured maybe we shouldn't miss this opportunity. In the audition they are looking to see if your kid can take direction but even more they want to make sure your kiddo can be away from you. More on this topic soon... So we paid the sliding scale tuition and were ready to commit to 10 months of Sunday morning classes. Oh yea.. they never mentioned until after we were enrolled that the schedule is from 9:30-11:15 and that it's two 45 min. classes! Tap and ballet/creative movement. My daughter definitely did not want to do tap class and I would have never signed up for this class but it was part of their program and we had no choice. So day 1 of tap... was a disaster. Lots of fetal positioning, leaving the room, off to the corner, hands over her ears, looking for me, leaving the room again... yea it didn't go well. Quick 15 min. break and then my poor toddler was at it again in ballet. She was a little more energized for this class as there was less banging sounds now and the teacher incorporated some games. So I was hopeful that maybe if we toughed it through the tap and just made it to ballet we could get through 10 months of this. Well after about class 3 of her demonstrating the same behaviors, the studio sends us an email. Not only us, we learned that many parents got this same email, and when talking to the parents the wording was almost identical..."child's behavior is disrupting the flow of class...." Also, if you're sending the same email to multiple families, maybe it's your program and not the kids? All of us parents who talked about getting this email were full of anxiety and stress and were not feeling good at all about their experience with the program. The final straw for me came on the 6th dance class after talking to the families and learning that folks were getting reprimanded for walking into the room to help their kiddo who was having a mini-crisis/meltdown and then the tap teacher repeatedly yelled at my child to "shut the door behind her" as she was leaving the room due to stress. And I watched as the tap teacher told a parent to leave their child alone while they were comforting them at the door, encouraging them to enter the room. That was the last straw and we quit that day. I'm sharing this not to give StepsPDX a bad review but honestly for the families interested in this program. You have to know what's coming if you invest your time. I wish I did.

Came here on a Sunday for Dance Church with some friends, which might sound weird but was really…read moreamazing and fun (google it!). Class starts at 10am and online they say you should arrive 15 minutes early. We did this and no one else was there and we were told we arrived much earlier than people normally do. We got coffee around the corner and came by at 9:57am and now there were a few people present. We paid for our class (card accepted), and put things away in the cubbies. There was NO WATER available which is a big deal for a dance class. There was a water cooler but it was empty. Class was awesome, with good music and great energy. I'd highly recommend it. There were probably about 40-50 people there. It felt very freeing to be able to move however I wanted to, but also helpful to have some guidance / reminders about moving my hands or arms. Class wrapped up by 11:30am. The space is bright and open and clean. Street parking nearby was easy. I'd be happy to come back.

I have done absolutely zero ballet before, but after a couple weeks of classes and a couple YouTube videos to brush up on the terminology, I feel like I'm getting the hang of it. I like that you don't have to commit to a series of classes and can just pay for single drop in classes. I needed that freedom to be brave enough to try it. The instructor is great, kind and encouraging and clear. Come join, it's fun!

They are really great at slowly introducing the classical ballet style to young kids. Each year there are more expectations and rules for them follow, but they do it in a loving way. She is a devoted dancer that has trained for most of her life, and it shows. The House Dance classes she has taught have changed my life in regards to dance. Super high energy, we learn a ton of drills for footwork that you can practice at home, a true foundation class. Donna really pays attention to all the students in the class and teaches for each person at their level, and then will challenge you based on where you are at without pushing you away by forcing too much of a challenge. She teaches house dance sometimes as part of the Wednesday night street dance series, which changes the theme focus pretty much weekly right now. This is one of the only adult dance studios that I've been to that has classes focused on Technique in dance. At least, Donna's classes focus on that a lot. Maricella's Hip-hop class is also fantastic here; You get a longer class here than you would at other studios in town for your money, and you repeat the choreography a LOT, but heads up she never does it to a specific song (just ongoing to a mix of hiphop songs). It's a great practice for drilling choreography memory regardless, but you are not dancing for the emotional choreography within a specific song. It's similar to her class held at NWDP but there are much fewer teens here, if any at all. There are a diverse range of people that show up to this hiphop class which is also cool. I think it's among the easier hiphop classes in Portland for beginners, noting you would be expected to keep up with remembering a choreography, and despite being long you drill it over and over so much that you'll get it if you try. She is a great teacher too, if she notices most of the class is having trouble with a specific movement she breaks it down over again.

It really is mostly a location thing and I had to prioritize another (also great) workout studio near my home that I could walk to in a shorter time that it took me to drive or ride my bike to Pulse. But about this place: I love that you can take classes back to back so you can get both strength training and cardio out of the way. And they even have wonderful recovery/muscle-repair type classes as well. Anyway, I miss Pulse! I hope their schedule and my schedule align sooner than later because I would love to go back and dance my butt off!

Last seasons show we were just harrassed a little bit about the stupidest stuff. There was a Conduit class in there before my rehearsal and someone left a paper cut and I got a email about it. Even if you do everything possible to lock up the studio after hours they will blame you if someone sets off the alarm and not give you proof and try to charge you for the police coming. Nobody really explains to you what to do and when they do its pretty vague. Also if you have two nights in a row they want you to break everything down(that you had to put up all by yourselves) and put it back up the next night. They make you pay for tech time and only give you a few hours. Our shows were at 730 and they did not give us the studio until 6....which meant set up with 0 time to practice or even settle in. But the worst part was, when we set out the risers for our audience to sit in. These risers were uneven and the legs barely were on. When you would walk to set out chairs on them they shook back and forth. When i brought this to thier attention they told me that we could use the screws in the closet there if we wanted to grab our power tools and do it ourselves. REALLY? Then they expected us to lift these very heavy risers and set the upright against the wall. I did not have my dancers do that because it is highly unsafe and we were never shown exactly how to put them back. I run a buisness myself and consider myself a very responsible person as well as my dance company and our husbands and friends( whom of which took all of us to clear out this space and still took a hour). I paid 700$ for two nights which is inexpensive for a space but not worth it at all! plus instead of the 100 seats they claim to fit, it only seats about 70 comfortable and without being ghetto and making people sit on pillows on the floor or behind a curtain. THIS PLACE IS HORRIBLE!

If you've ever wanted to try your hand at the sexy, sultry Argentine tango...this is the place to…read morelearn. Don't confuse this with ballroom tango.....and this dance is not for people with space issues. Argentine tango is danced in a "close embrace". So bring breath mints and wear deodorant. I've taken tango classes at several locations and found that Alex does an excellent job of teaching this dance, and explaining the nuances of the tango. There are quite a few beginning classes here to choose from. (If you love Argentine tango there is opportunity to dance every night of the week in Portland!)

For Tango, this is the place. Many (if not all) of Portland's best dancers can be seen here and the floor energy on a good night feels like it's coming up from the floorboards. If you dance tango, you need to go here. Alex Krebs (the owner) creates a really great ambiance and has weekly classes for those who want to learn Argentine Tango. But, as the other reviewer stated, this is a dance in close embrace, so you'll be spending time in close contact with other people's body. Be prepared!
