This is an Off-Road park for Trucks and ATVs. Awesome terrain, HUGE park, as well as camping and…read morefood! Jon has a very laid back management of the park, which is nice that you can just go enjoy yourself. He is always around, so if you get stuck, he can come unstuck you. No matter the size (bulldozer and escavtor on site if it is that bad!). He also encourages people to make trails of their own if they'd like. Just keep it in the property's borders (which are massive so that is easy!). He also cooks if you bring a group for a day or weekend trip. The food is always amazingly good. If you call ahead and schedule, then when you arrive in the morning he will usually have breakfast ready for you (the french toast is unreal), with all the trimmings (bacon, toast, coffee, soda, milk, water, real maple syrup, as well as fake maple syrup. Lunches and dinners are always a toss up - but always good! and always way more than enough food. The lodge is a little rough, but it matches the nature of the park. Fireplae in the corner for the fall and spring. I've heard him mention that he does a snowcross track in the winter too, but haven't had a chance to go yet. And the huge couches around the fireplace may look gross, but seriously try sitting there after a day of wheeling... if you aren't asleep in five minutes than you still have more park to see! Campsites are spread around the lodge. Far enough that you can camp, and not be bothered by anyone else's noise. He has some old RV's parked on some of the sites, that I think he used to rent out. Looks like someone broke in and destroyed all of them though. Definitely stay out of them haha. We tented out and slept in our trucks and had a blast. Right below the lodge are two large mud pits, a dirtbike track with some decent sized woops, and a small rock pile with some good obstacles for rock crawlers. One of the trails takes you right to the top of Winter Hill. You can see for miles, its very pretty, and the trip is usually a few hours up the trails so its a good half-day run. This park needs more visitors. I fear if people don't start hitting this place harder, he may just close up. This park has SO MUCH potential, and is really the "free-est" terrain in maine from legislature. If you haven't been, it's worth the trip at least once. Alcohol is permitted as long as it is kept reasonable. We usually are having too much fun during the day to remember that we have beer. - NO GLASS! Have been going for 2 years and will continue to go as long as it is open!

Black Mountain of Maine is a wonderful anti-corporate answer to the "big" areas. Cozy, friendly, and beautiful runs down the mountain. A place where kids can run around without fear or the need for parental hovering. A kick-butt bar with live music. Simply, what skiing was and should be.... We got here for the first time on the Indy Pass as we have been visiting Indy areas, some of them for several years in a row. Black Mountain is a short drive away from downtown Rumford, a paper mill, quaint town of 6,000 people featuring historic homes and a working downtown. Arriving at Black Mountain, the large lodge is quite welcoming, with just about every conceivable need within the lodge. Once outside, the beginner's Novice Lift provides optimal runs for novices or warmups. The main lift, although a slow fixed triple, allows access to most of the 1,100 vertical terrain and a variety of trails. It should be said that with some effort and uphill hiking, there is another side of the mountain, glades galore, that is accessible from this area. There is yet another T-bar that provides access to even more terrain. Apres-ski, we were treated to a superb pub with great rock music, plenty of beer, and great company. Overall, the vibe in this mountain is what I remember skiing was like from my youth. Unhurried, civil, friendly, and simple. Awesome place.

It is located on picturesque Lower Richardson Lake, and you can rent a canoe or motor skiff to enjoy excellent fishing and exploration. Or, if you want to rough it they have many wilderness sites along the 17 mile long lake.

It says that they have tent sites and I guess they do, though there is not much space at most. It is set up very well for ATVs and RVs with water and electric at most sites. They have some lean to sites as well and this is where our story goes a bit weary. We booked months ago for a lean to site along the pristine swift river in Byron. A week before we knew bad weather was to come, so we asked if there was any way to swap sites to a flat ground site. The answer was no that they were booked up. I believed that, as it was a weekend. However many many sites round us stayed empty for the entirety of our trip. We had a very uneven, root and rock filled site. Our site was L16 and it was right in the river, just 30 feet down, and it also had its own small river running right through the middle of camp. It was a very very wet stay, even though it only rained a few times. It said one 8X8 flat spot for a tent, but there was none. We ended up with two extra people and it cost me another 100$ then when we booked originally and they charged us for 2 tent spots too, when they knew we where in a spot that didn't have that. The lady at the office with dark long hair has a bit of an attitude. So we didn't want to have to ask for much, we had to park our extra car and trailer behind the office. Also making trips back and forth as need be. She's abrasive and doesn't seem like she's happy to be there..... the place is in a beautiful spot, but beware. A few sites have parking quite a ways from sites themselves. These sites will have you walking back and forth to your vehicle quite frequently. They do warn you on the website which sites are best but photos can be misleading. Some of the lean to sites, seemed to have flat ground, and they looked real nice to say at. All in all we did the best we could with a crappy and wet situation. I really think they could have accommodated us and switched our sites to one on flat ground, since almost all around us were empty. It's in a beautiful part of our state, but I don't think we will be back. We will opt for something a bit closer to things, as Byron was a good 30-45 mins either way.

For a last minute reservation they were amazingly attentive (and we were a bit high maintenance!). They accommodated us at every turn, allowing us a late checkout, and leaving the boat trailer in the parking lot the day we checked out. The restaurant was really good and all of the staff, especially Amber, were especially welcoming and accommodating. The cabin was incredibly comfortable, warm at night, and cozy, especially once we built the fire. We were told our cabin had the nicest bed on the premises, and I believe it!The resort itself is beautiful, and the "cabin chic" is well done and high quality. I would like to go back next year in warmer weather and enjoy the water more.
