Hurray, huzzah, and hallelujah for Sandy City and their ability to recognize the huge demand and benefits of a dedicated offleash dog park. You hear me? Huzzah, I say! I've been taking the pooch here since she was a pup, and I'm so very very thankful that this place exits. Sometimes a dog's just got to run free, and you don't always have time to run up to Memory Grove, Millcreek Canyon, or up to Forest Service or BLM land. So I'm pleased as pickles that Sandy has a dog park. The park is located just east of Jordan High School, perched near the rim of Dimple Dell, and tucked behind a residential neighborhood. It's not too terribly difficult to find, but I like that it's out of the way enough of thick civilization. There it sits as a giant, chain-link island in the sea of nothing. A beacon of barking. Originally there was just one part, but a few years ago they constructed an area connected to the original grass park that was pure bark and gravel. They closed the grassy area for rehabilitation (them dogs can tear up the turf and turn it into a muddy mess). The grassless area was once again closed once the original park was back in tip-top shape, and there it stays today. It's my understanding that once the lawn gets tired again, they'll swap back to the east side. But either way, your pup has a place to roam free. Although on the smallish side, I have not a complaint. There are several benches, rocks, and tables to sit on, or a cement walking path that circles the park. Parking is plentiful, and if anything it's too popular on really nice days. I've never felt overcrowded, but every so often I feel like we're at capacity. There are poop bags provided (for the love of sneakers will you please pick up after your dog?) and a drinking fountain that's on during summer with a basin for the dogs to lap directly from there. Expect to find a wide array of abandoned tennis balls scattered about. Make sure you read the rules before you go. There are important things to know about limits on numbers of dogs, poop, leashes, dogs in heat, kids, and liability. Be familiar and respect the rules for your own dog's safety and the safety of others. And now a massive rant: Hey, what would be a great idea to bring into a dog park? I mean, what would make this trip to the dog park a fantastic experience for me and my small children? Oh, I know! How about we bring a bunch of piping hot food wafting out the aroma of animal flesh into the dog park! Genius idea! I'm sure a bunch of dogs won't care about the COOKED MEAT I'm laying out on the table and will leave us alone, right? Seriously, folks, If you haven't thought through the idea of bringing food into the dog park and laying it out on a table for 20 dogs to smell, then you deserve every last kamikaze dog snout, tongue and snapping jaw that comes your way. If you're not smart enough to figure out that food + AN ENTIRE FENCED IN PARK FULL OF DOGS = a terrible combination, then you deserve the lesson that follows that equation. Don't. Bring food. To the dog park. You may be thinking, "Oh, I bet this guy's dog invaded somebody's food and that's why he's ranting about it." Wrong. Luckily, I've seen the rocket scientists bring their sacks of Mickey-Dees or KFC into the park and leashed my pup before it became a problem. But my day at park is done. I just sit back and watch the fried chicken come out of the bucket and the swarm of Pavlovian proofs zero in and go for the kill. Hey Captain Logic, don't yell at that guy's dog because it made your daughter cry about losing a piece of chicken. You expect an otherwise well-behaved dog to lie down when you break out the drumsticks in the middle of PARK FULL OF DOGS so you can have a pick-i-nic with your family? You made your daughter cry. When you lugged a bucket full of the Colonel's recipe into a FENCED IN PARK FULL OF DOGS, you made your daughter cry. The dog was just an innocent bystander. End of rant. Big thumbs up to Sandy for investing in this, and for continuing to maintain it. Its a huge asset to the community and a downright joy for dogs to have.

Sandy City Dog Park is hidden within a residence area. The "parking lot" is not paved and is very bumpy. There are two main fenced areas for the dogs to play in. One is just a plain dirt field with trees and benches around the edges of the park. The other fenced area is mostly filled with grass and rocks. It also has a paved path for walks. There are more areas to sit in the shade in the grassy fenced area than the dirt area because there are a lot more trees. One thing to keep in mind is that your dog can get VERY dirty when it rains, especially when it's in the bare dirt area of the park. The "parking lot" also gets very muddy because it's just an unpaved dirt lot. I mostly encounter bigger breeds of dogs there, but there are always a few small dogs. However, you have to bring your small dog with caution because depending on how aggressive the other big dogs are, sometimes the smaller dogs are chased or caught in between dangerous play fights. This park does not require a pass of any sort, like the Taylorsville Park does; however, this leaves the opportunity for any dog to join in on the fun, so sometimes owners with aggressive dogs will bring them in and you just have to be careful for the safety of your dog and others. The area is pretty clean. The park provides poo bags and water fountains for you (except I would not drink out of that...) and your dog. There are places to sit, and the fenced off areas are reliable with no breaks within the fence or openings for your dog to escape.

Friendly owners and friendly dogs! There's no real grass, and lots of rocks in the entire Center, but all the dogs are having a blast!

Nice enclosed place for off leash dogs. People with dogs that are aggressive need to recognize that their dogs don't belong around others and leave instead of just saying there dog is "just vocal". The entrance can be a hazard for new dogs coming into 'a pack'. Bring an umbrella for shade!

So the way I might judge a park is different than if the pups do....and since this is a dog park, I'll write the review from their standpoint...if they could write. As soon as mom drives up the street, I immediately recognize where we are and start whining with excitement. I remember playing here and have been so excited to return. She pulls into the parking lot (which can get crowded at peak times, but we go early in the morning and it's A-OK). I can hardly contain my excitement as we get to the gate. Inside, there is so much room to run! I especially love the stream down at the bottom, although there are signs warning the people about the potential for disease from the water. But I don't care-I jump right in. Along the perimeter, there's a walking path that mom walks along and I loosely follow. I guess she likes that she can keep an eye on me while I can also run free. There's are other areas that are separate-a small dog section and another gated area if some dogs want privacy. Kind of nesting play areas, if you will. There are signs all around reminding people to pick up poop, along with bags to help with the icky task. They are kind of passive aggressive- they basically say "don't come here if you can't pick up after your dog." I get the point, but the tone is a little strange and unwelcoming. There is a lot of native vegetation and plants. Some of them can be a little prickly and get stuck in my fur-so mom always checks to get foxtails out when we go home. Of all the parks that mom takes me to, this one is two paws up and pretty dog-gone great. I love the space to run and the water to play in.

Some very fond memories of my dad getting the old inner tubes, blowing them up, and tubing down. He took my little brothers a couple times and I went as a pre-teen and the hill seemed much smaller then. As a teen, my first ever paying job was here. Again, it was still a school, and they had baseball diamonds where I was an umpire for tee-ball. Such memories. When they got rid of the school, I was curious to see what would happen. What sprung up in its place was a park that the next generation of kids will have to fill their memories. Instead of the school, and a winter-only sledding hill, this is a full-blown summer park. Apparently splash pads are a thing. Safer than a pool (at least for drowning) and still built to keep you cool in the heat of the summer, there's a big ol' splash pad here that's built for the little ones to stomp around and get wet. Bring the sunscreen. As others have mentioned, there's a lack of shade here, so you'll want to protect yourself from the sun. And it's probably best as a weekday reprieve. It swarms with kids on the weekends and you might get elbowed around. Beyond the splash pad, you've got some playgrounds that are geared towards different aged kids, some courts, and a whole lot of grass. This park covers the bases for lots of kids of different ages and will surely be one of the places to provide them with fond childhood memories.
