I was referred to Dr Thakkar to diagnose why both of my hands trembled so much. I was unable to hold a fork or type on a keyboard. After an extensive examination, including a brain MRI, I was diagnosed with a Parkinson's like symptom called Severe Tremor. We began a medicine based treatment plan using Primidone. I showed much improvement after several months (medications sometimes take a long time to impact your system) and I was able to hold silverware and glasses again. After a year of medication, Dr Thakkar spoke to me about Botox injections at key muscle points in my arm, to reduce the remaining tremors. I have completed 2 rounds of injections (the first round lasted 15 weeks, a little longer than studies have shown) and it appears the tremors are under control. If you have been taking pill form therapy for your tremors, you might want to look into the injections to see if they can improve your experience. I believe there are approximately 50 patients that are currently being treated this way. As you may have read from other reviews, Dr Thakkar's calendar is usually full, up to 3 months out. From my own experience, he is well worth the wait. Personable, empathetic and professional, I am fortunate to have him as my Neurologist. The office staff is very friendly, too! I brought my husband, who has been living with Parkinson's disease for almost 20 years, to see Dr. Sandeep Thakkar in Newport Beach. At first, my husband was able to see Dr. Thakkar directly for the first few visits, and we appreciated having the neurologist personally evaluate his condition and treatment. After those initial 2-3 appointments, however, all subsequent visits were scheduled with a physician assistant instead of with Dr. Thakkar, even though my husband's case is long‑standing and complex. I understand that practices often use PAs to help with scheduling and workload, but as a caregiver I expected my husband to be followed primarily by the neurologist we chose. Over time it felt like we no longer truly had access to Dr. Thakkar himself, which was disappointing and concerning given the seriousness and duration of my husband's Parkinson's. Because of this, I eventually decided to stop bringing my husband to this office and moved his care to a different neurologist who sees him personally at each visit. I saw Dr. Thakkar with sever neurological issues. He first asked for my medicare card in addition to my insurance card, which he took photos of with his personal phone. I was experiencing jerking and shaking, which he said was physically impossible and he had seen patients with this condition 20 or 30 times and he did not know what it was, and apparently did not care to find out. The whole appointment lasted less than 15 min. I am now going to UCI where they are more than interested in learning and treating my condition. read more

After several neurologists, we were blessed to be referred to Dr Sandeep Thakkar at Hoag In Newport Beach. A few years before, my husband had been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. He had to quit his job and go on disability. The medication was only helping part time. The past Drs weren't very personable or encouraging. We changed insurance and were referred to Dr Thakkar. Our first meeting I was impressed. He comes to the waiting room himself to greet his patients and escort them to his office. He took a full history, sent my husband for a full evaluation that took several days, but most of all he gave us hope. Dr Thakkar is a Movement Disorder Specialist. Movement disorders specialists are neurologists with additional training in Parkinson's disease and are often the best kind of doctor to see for a definitive diagnosis or to work with to create an ideal effective treatment plan. Dr Thakkar immediately changed his medication to a newer one: Rytary. He explain that my husband qualified to have Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery. It was scheduled and appointments set up for programming. Everything he does is tailored to the individual patient. Since the surgery, my husband has only had to continue on the Rytary. He was able to go off of several additional medications. My husband has seen him for over 3 years now. Dr Thakkar has always been compassionate and positive with every appointment. He encourages us to email him with any concerns and always answers them promptly. He cares about his patients but also about the family unit. Dr Thakkar sees patients in Newport Beach, Irvine and Orange. We drive from the Inland Empire and it is worth every mile. We can't recommend Dr Thakkar more highly. Dr Thakkar and his staff are wonderful. They all seem to care and treat me like I am special every time I come for an appointment. Dr Thakkar has to work extra hard on my case because I have a rare genetic disease that "doesn't fall into any category" and no one really knows a lot about. But he seems to care and work very hard at helping me and relieving my suffering and learning about my disease even though it's not his specialty. Every appointment he has all my reports and testing from my other doctors (I think I am up to 28?) and makes sure to involve them in the decision making of my treatment. Dr Thakkar has been my neurologist for about 5 years. I had seen 3 others prior to establishing care with him. when i first came to him, i wasn't sure what he could offer me that would help my symptoms that the others had not yet done. boy was i surprised. Cheryl was very involved in my direct care. her and dr Thakkar were very kind, attentive, and actually took the time (as much as i needed) to listen to my story and develop a plan to help improve my tremors. this did not happen overnight. we went through many different things to find what worked for me. During my years with Dr Thakkar, he and Cheryl would always mention DBS to me. there was never any pressure, but gentle education. I've been diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson's disease and was so incredibly fortunate to have been referred to Dr. Thakkar 3.5 years ago after having seen two other underwhelming neurologists. Dr. Thakkar is an outstanding physician (and I've seen many). He is great with follow-up and follow-through. He is not the take-this-pill-and-I'll-see-you-next-year type; I've seen him at least a dozen times now to adjust medications and discuss treatment, which is important because Parkinson's is a progressive disease. Dr. Thakkar is very personable and takes time during appointments to treat me as a whole; I've never felt rushed, even when he's running behind. He is extremely knowledgeable from current treatments and therapies to the latest research and clinical trials. He answers every question I ask in detail. He tailors my treatment specifically to me, which is so important because Parkinson's affects each patient differently. He is concerned, compassionate, and absolutely accessible; my emails have always been answered, personally by him, within a day. About 7 months into my treatment under Dr. Thakkar, I found myself in an unusual, high-risk situation with limited medically documented precedent. Dr. Thakkar was extremely responsive, consulted his mentors, did additional research, communicated with my other medical specialist at the time, and successfully guided me through with care. Afterwards he even thanked my for my trust. Dr. Thakkar is an involved, hands-on physician who genuinely cares about his patients. I was extremely disappointed with this Doctor whom I would rather called him a businessman. During the first time visit he spent literally under 10 min of his time. Most of the time was spent with his PA. During a second visit he spent about 15 min of his time, and when my dissatisfaction was mentioned about the time spent, he said that's how he runs his practice/ business, it's up to him how much time to spend with each person, people wait for an appointment with him 2-3 months (which is true, but not because he is so great, because there are not that many specialists available in this area and other, better doctors wait time is 4-5 months) and if I don't like his way go ahead and find someone else. And I did!!! Dr. Thakkar completely misdiagnosed the patient, prescribed a huge amount of medication with bad side effects for something that patient does not have. This doctor has an extremely high opinion about himself (after him I saw much more experienced and humble doctors who correctly diagnosed the patient), and you do yourself a favor if you stay away from him. read more

Dr. Thakkar treated my Dad for nearly a year for Parkinson's. Turns out he doesn't have Parkinson's!! He has PSP, (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy). The main reason we left Dr. Thakkar was because we pleaded with him to replace one of my Dad's medications, my Dad was having a bad reaction to it. Instead of changing the medication he doubled it. The next morning it took us 1-1/2 hours to get anyone in Dr. Thakkar's office to respond. Dr. Thakkar offered no solution, he just told us to dial 911. Several times during the time my Dad was under Dr. Thakkar's care my Mother left him messages for various reasons and he wouldn't return her phone calls. I would have to email him to get him to respond. Dr. Thakkar is a young doctor recently brought into the medical group by Dr. Chance who has many years of experience with Parkinson's. After several months of watching my Dad's faster than normal decline I called his office and requested that he consult with Dr. Chance on my father's case and his staff flatly refused. I then asked them to leave a message for Dr. Chance to call me. They called back a few minutes later to tell me Dr. Chance refused to speak with me. I have had chronic neck pain for 15 years. I saw multiple specialists during this time, but none could really improve my pain. Waste of time; way worse then I've been in years, because he decided he knew better then the fully trained, certified REAL NEURO'S that had been treating me for years. I have been a patient of Dr Thakkar for several years. I was diagnosed with a neurological disorder called Blepharospasm which is treated with Botox injections around the eyes (lids and brows). I can't say enough about Dr. Thakkar. This disorder is difficult to diagnose, but the success of the treatment requires a great deal of knowledge about shot placement and dosage and can require frequent adjustments to get the treatment right. While my condition is not curable, he has given me back a quality of life that I never thought I would have! In addition, Dr. Thakkar is kind and compassionate. I called yesterday to schedule an appointment. The doctor had a cancellation for this morning so I took that appointment. I arrived today and the location you can find but the parking is difficult. I was late. I arrived at the desk and they told me to sign in. They called me up to the desk and said the doctor started seeing patients and I would have to wait until he can squeeze me in and I would not get a full appointment. I was embarrassed and humiliated. You should warn patients when they make the appointment to not be late or you will be short changed. I work hard for the money I make and the money I pay for insurance and I do not tolerate disrespect. I wait to see my other doctors all the time.
