The good: when you call this place, everyone is super nice, patient and will get you set up. Three of us bought gift cards that came with promo codes so the only way to use them at once was to call someone to do this. 6 separate codes, and there was a small amount left over so we got their $4 water bottles. Game play - 30min felt like a reasonable time in the virtual world! I think 35min would've been perfect because there were 2 more games that we didn't get to play. High quality and didn't give me motion sickness. We got a headset, VR set, jacket, arm and ankle sensors, the whole shebang! Videos - production value was so cool and it's so fun to play back the time and to be actually able to see your character. The bad: expensive as heck! $60 per person + taxes and fees! For 6 people, it came to about $380! The sensors had a little bit of delay. My BF had to request assistance twice because his arm sensors had issues. Another in our party had a headset issue. The technical stuff just HAVE to be sorted out to be able to enjoy the whole experience. Timing - most of us came early and in that time, a staff member could've prepared us to think of a team name and choose characters so that it wouldn't be part of our actual time. But there was no one there to tell us anything beforehand or really even acknowledge our presence. Theme - we chose Squid Games and it's the only non-shooting option. Sandbox should definitely switch out some of the same old zombie or space call of duty ones to serve us some puzzle sessions. Get creative! Squid Games was extremely fun but I was so frustrated by the red light/green light one. My tracker wasn't really picking up my sensor when I touched a coin. Space - 4 people could move around comfortably but 6 people in the same size room was crowded! I think there should be slightly bigger rooms for the max number of people. You sweat a lot by the end so we just have to trust that they "clean" the fabric part of the goggles! If they do another promo, I want to go back! We would have to shout for assistance, by the third time I felt defeated. Towards the end I asked if I could get a refund for just me due to not being able to experience the game, how can you shoot zombies with no gun?? All he had to offer was a credit and said no refunds allowed. We paid close to $700 and to not even get an apology for a messed up experience or refund one person out of 15 people is crazy.... Expensive but fun We received a gift card to try out the vr experience. My husband made reservations. We showed up early like the email suggested but since we were booked with another group we had to wait for them to arrive. They never did. They give them 5 minutes grace period after the start time. And then they let us start. No need to come more than 5 minutes before your start time. After that they prep you with what is going to happen and gear you up with the virtual sensors. At that time they hit you up with paying more to upgrade your gun. After that the game is started. You get a couple minute virtual prep but i think that should have been longer so you can practice with your gun and just get used to the experience. Then you mission starts. The game itself can be intense since you are being attacked from 360 degrees. The experience lasts about a half hour. When you leave they send you an email with the highlight video of your experience. That is fun to share with others. read more

The staff was incredibly welcoming and professional--right from the start they got us suited up quickly and efficiently, which we really appreciated since we've had slower experiences at other Sandbox VR locations in California. We played the Zombie Asylum game and it was intense, lifelike, and seriously fun. The whole team made sure we were comfortable and confident with the gear, and they stayed engaged throughout the session to make sure everything went smoothly. There was a small hiccup with one player's system due to a brief internet glitch, but it was handled well and honestly didn't take away from the experience at all. Would 100% recommend this location. Finally made the hike from Southeast suburbs to check this place out. I made an online reservation for my husband just before we hit the road, and there were plenty of times available in the evening, on a Wednesday. It's located right across from Dicks and conveniently close to the parking garages. We got there a bit early and we're told that another pair had joined our reservation. So be aware that can happen. The online system does ask if you want to join another party. I'm unsure if the other couple purposely joined or if the location just put us together to save on time. There were plenty of other open rooms at the time. Anyway, the other couple were cool, and we enjoyed having them on our team. We played Deadwood Mansion. It was our first VR experience, and we had a blast! The game had to be paused once so my husband's weapon could be reset. Then again, by the hosts, to swap out something that needed recharging. I will say that you should wear comfy, breathable clothing. You have an entire PC on your back in a vest, headphones, and VR goggles. We were sweating in no time! The aiming isn't entirely accurate but you get pretty used to it. Once it was over, they provide a few videos of the game play both in real life and spliced with the virtual game play. That was an awesome souvenir. All in all, we thought it was a super fun way to spend about 40 minutes. It's a little costly but they do offer a discount if you rebook within a day or two. Don't waste your time on this scam. The experience is marginally better than a stock Oculus Quest 2. In fact, they are using a modified version of that device. The biggest issue was the guns glitching. The shotgun routinely hung in the air disconnected from your body and it had a 1.5 second delay from the trigger squeeze until it shot. A fast-paced zombie shooter is no fun with this kind of performance. Communication between players is impossible as the mics also had the same delay. Also, at least at the Westlake store, do not buy the Japanese snack box. The store created a display with all of their stock. The display was placed in front of a window in blazing hot direct sunlight. Most of the snacks were melted. One of the chocolate items was still a liquid. After about the 5th item we opened we realized the box was ruined. When I went to return it for a refund the store put up a fight. (They offered me another box damaged by the display) I apologize to the other customers that were there as when they said they would not give a refund for the damaged product I went full Karen. They did eventually give the refund and also a lifetime ban for my troubles. Between the subpar technology, the incident with the expensive snack box ($50) and the way they handle customer issues this should be a hard pass for anyone on the fence about giving it a try. read more

I see this as the new escape room craze, these places are going to pop up everywhere for 1-2 years then people aren't going to talk about them as much. It's expensive, 50-55 a player and you'll probably be put with strangers in a space better suited for 4 instead of 6, but it still works. The game is fun. I heard people screaming and laughing, so obviously everyone was enjoying it. I'm a veteran of VR so I don't think I had the same sense of joy some did, but again, it was fun. We played zombies, there is no real movement, much like using a wired oculus. And reloading can be extremely difficult sometimes, annoyingly so. Honestly I don't know why they made reloading so hard. Even with all the negatives I would do this again. It's a unique time with friends, it's fun, and in a great area to do other things after. read more

This a precaution for ALL PARENTS!! This was our second and last experience ever at westlake! The worst experience ever! The game had so many glitches game had to be continuously paused, reset, whatever. Then MY MINOR CHILD WAS ASULTED by the manager! WITH UNKNOWING MOTHER IN THE ROOM. Apparently to get gear off my minor child becuase gear was more important than a minor child. Then empolyee threw other equipment and kicked us out. My woman kids and I came here second time. The first was for Amber Sky then on my birthday we reserved Deadwood Valley (zombies). I enjoyed both experiences and so did my family. The Amber Sky game was my youngest son's favor. The Deadwood game was great but there was a glitch stalling the game momentarily but if it wasn't for that I would give this place a five star. I enjoyed it and the staff was nice both times and professional. I'll be returning to experience the Squid Game next which daughter tried on her birthday last month and she said it was great. If I could give this place 0 stars I would! Rasmieh, manager on duty was not personable and very rude. My family and I were in town visiting for the holidays and we thought it would be a fun experience to do the Squid Games activity. With the traffic being congested with holiday shoppers we were 3 minutes late when we arrived. The guy who met us at the door was kind and was getting us started when Rasmieh came stating that we would not be able to do the activity. She 1st stated that she wanted us to reschedule, so that we could get the full time. We explained that we were here from out of town, we wouldn't be able to reschedule, and that we didn't mind our time being cut short the 3 minutes we were late. Rasmieh refused to let us start the activity, stating that it was against policy. We have been to Sandbox in Austin where we live several times and have never had an experience like this before. She made it clear that this was not Texas. She also stated that she would not give us a refund since we were unable to schedule. We contacted our driver to come back to pick us up since we were unable to participate in the activity. While we were waiting for our driver to pick us up she asked us to leave. She went out of her way to be nasty to us after we spent $300 for an activity that we didn't get a chance to do. Being 3 minutes late didn't deserve this treatment. read more
