This was our fifth time to this property, and this was our second free week with Sandals. We've travelled to Sandals a lot, and Sandals Barbados/Royal Barbados is our favorite. We qualified for room 1B, which is a Butler room that we've stayed in before. Thanks to a 777 sale, I was able to upgrade to S1B for a few hundred dollars more.
When we arrived and were shown to our room (4101), it was in a perfect location, and if you went out the back door of the building, you were in the path where Sandals Barbados and Royal Barbados meet. So, we were right in the center of everything. However, we were on the end, which over time, we realized we didn't like as much. Being in a center room along the lagoon is just nicer for us for some reason. More importantly than that, this room had a horrible musty smell. We noticed it right when we walked in. I didn't ask to move because we loved the location, and I was hoping it would go away.
You could also see the room showing its age. If you looked at the back of the chairs, they had mildew on them. The sinks had mold in the spouts, and the handle on a cabinet was falling off. Our sliding glass door did not actually close, and you could still slide it when it was locked. And the A/C was rigged to be on 24/7, and there was no way to adjust it. We like the room cold, so it worked ok for us. But if I had paid $8500 for this room, I'd have been upset.
And on our last night I went to run a bath in our bathtub on our patio. I guess I found out why no one had run one for us all week, because the drain didn't work! I was really disappointed, and there wasn't much I could do about it since it was our last night. I just kind of expected our bathtub to work in an $8500 room.
The service and areas around the resort were wonderful, and exactly as they've always been. Bartenders that we've known for several trips recognized us right away and came over and hugged us, which made us feel so great and like we were back home. Dwane at Lover's Lane, and Dwayne, Rodney and Pierre at Sky Bar came up and hugged us, and I always remember what we're drinking and what we like. It's so incredible that they can do that when they see us like once a year, lol. They're just that good at their jobs!
My husband also loves pool volleyball, and plays every time it's offered. He has gotten to know several of the playmakers over the years, and we even got to have lunch with Shane.
The food here is, without a doubt, the best Sandals food. I do think they changed suppliers or chefs or something because the food was a little different this time, but even so, still easily the best! I'm vegetarian, and I just have so many options. I never even had a veggie burger at lunch because I had so many other options! We had Merry Monkey for lunch from our Butlers a couple days. We also ate at Neptune's for dinner for the very first time in all of our trips here, and we loved it. It's really quiet, and the ambiance is great with the waves in the in the background, and the food was good. Honestly, the whole trip, the only bad meal we had was the late night room service we ordered one night. And even that was ok. It was just kinda cold and not very good. But seriously, everything else was wonderful. And you can't forget the donuts at the donut shop and the cupcakes at Café de Paris. Just so much yummy stuff all the time!
Our Butlers arranged for us to get the Escalade back to the airport, which was awesome! The transfer seemed a little late, but I just went with it. The JetBlue line at the airport was LONG. Fortunately we were JetBlue Mint, so we got to go in that line, but it might have been close otherwise.
I'm probably more at a 3.5 for this trip, but really only because of the condition of our room, and our Butler service this time compared to last time. In fairness, our Butler service the trip before this was absolutely perfect! And really, with comparing this resort to itself. If I were to compare this resort to other Sandals, I'd rate it far and above most of them. We've been here several times, and the resort itself is spectacular, so I'm bumping it up to a 4. Honestly, even with our room the way it was, I've had worse, even at Sandals. We were pretty disappointed in with our room, but that's purely because it didn't live up to $8500 expectations. Normally, I never spend $8500 for a week at Sandals, so I ordinarily would not have been that disappointed in the room.
I also got a horrible cold while we were there, and then my husband caught it, so both of us were sick, and we still had a great time! The SkyBar and Lover's Lane are our favorite bars of all the Sandals, and they have the best bartenders, too! Nightlife here is also good and easy to find, which is a huge plus for us. It is easily our favorite Sandals for a million reasons. read more
