I have lived in Buena Park for almost six years now and have been going to Mr. Sanchez for five out of those six years. My only regret is not being his customer my first year in the neighborhood. I lived a few blocks away from Sanchez Barber Shop when I was living up in Lakeview, so I went to him for a couple years. Mr. Sanchez is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, however, I'm evaluating on his skills as a barber. About 3/5 times, he'd fade me up evenly, and the other 2/5, it'd be very uneven. A few times, I mentioned that one side needed to be evened out, and he took his clippers and went up with a couple strokes, making that side even more uneven. So I chose not to open my mouth after that experience and let him do his thing. Since I fly every week for work, it was certainly more out of convenience that I'd go to see him on weekends, but now that I'm in River North, I'm pretty happy with the new venue that I've found. Mr. Sanchez gave me a perfect shape-up and cut the sides the length that I wanted. He is older than old school. He uses a straight edge blade with old man's shaving cream, that smells like coconuts, to line you up. He gives you a mirror to hold up the entire time so you can tell him if he needs to do this or that. This gentleman's gentleman shaped up this lady perfectly!!! Mr. Sanchez is an amazing barber. I was initially skeptical about an old-school barber with such a low price, but I can honestly say this hidden gem is not only a "gem" but also the best value you will get in the city. You can't beat an amazing $20 cut. Plus you get to watch whatever you want on Netflix via the huge 60"+ screen he has set up in front of the cutting chairs. Mr. Sanchez is almost too friendly and gives you the exact cut you ask for. I routinely ask for "a medium buzz on the side and a trim on the top" and it comes out looking better than any haircut I've asked for in the past, including those from more well-known barbershops and franchises. Mr. Sanchez is hands-down the best barber in the neighborhood. He's not a stylist. He's not a hairdresser. He's a barber. An old-school, man's man of a barber. Not only that, but he'll probably also be wearing a suit an tie when he cuts your hair. Classy. If you want to get a good haircut at a ridiculously good price, go see this man. When you walk in the door, he'll probably shout "Hello, my friend! How are you today?" When you get a haircut, he does a great job, and even uses a straight razor. The shop has some quirk decorations and a couple big fish tanks, but it all works. He's also always playing a movie on a big old DVD/VHS combo TV and you can expect to see anything from Star Wars to a Jackie Chan movie to an old boxing match. No chick flicks here. Haircuts are $15, but give him $20, because the man earns a good tip. read more

I see Vicente, an amazing barber who pays really close attention to detail and consistently gives a great fade. His cuts take a long time because he's committed to making you look your best, and he's masterful with the straight razor. First let me tell you that if you are not the person that gets fades, then this is not the place for you. I read many reviews where I read that Mr. Sanchez would always give you a buzz cut even if you didn't ask for it. Since I saw many other good reviews I decided to go and try out Mr. Sanchez. My hair was about three inches long. I told Mr. Sanchez that I just wanted to clean it up so cut about half an inch. He grabbed his clippers even though I said I preferred scissors, and he went at it. I realized it was just too late when I saw how much hair fell on my lap. So I had no choice but to let him finish cutting it. One thing I realized while I was waiting and getting my haircut is that all of Mr. Sanchez customers get a similar cut. Everybody that was there was getting that fade thing. So unless your hair looks like Lebron James' hair I suggest you try another place. My hair is going to take at least a month to get where it used to be so I know I will be rocking a stupid haircut for that long. I honestly don't know why everybody gives it five stars, maybe because it's cheap. I'd much rather pay three times more in order to get a good haircut. read more

A former bodybuilder from Mexico, he's from a lineage of barbers and is old-school serious about his craft. He's a master of the the quick-snip, and his straight-blade finishing is second to none. His shop looks like something out of a David Lynch movie, with cages of budgies, tanks of turtles, every magazine known to man, a massage chair, and even old bodybuilding posters of himself in the 60s! Just moved to the area from LA and was looking for a great barber who can do a proper taper and line up. Boy was I in for a treat. Señor Sanchez resorts to the tried and true straight blade, not just on my neck, but all around - behind the ears, lined up all across the front and back around. Plus, with the shaving cream and moisturizer, he really knows how to make you feel fresh. Great price, great convos, and something always entertaining playing on a giant tv in a room illuminated by a rainbow of incandescent light bulbs - aka great experience. Came to the shop because I just moved here from Boston. It's has a great '80s nostalgic style friendly barbers. I had Paul cut my hair he gave me the best high fade pompadour. My roommate told me about this place and I stopped in for a mens haircut yesterday. It was my first haircut here and I was very pleasantly surprised. He cut my hair exactly how I wanted it and it turned out GREAT. Mr. Sanchez goes the whole nine yards and shaves the back of the neck (with a straight razor), does the thing with the hot towel, and you come away from the whole experience feeling like a million bucks. Three consecutive fair-to-bad haircuts later, I'm pretty disappointed to be saying goodbye to Mr. Sanchez. On one cut I said "short," and pretty much got a buzz. The next time I said "medium," and got a buzz plus about an extra half inch. Two haircuts ago he missed some hairs around my ear and on this last one he got a little overzealous with the clippers and the left side of the top of my head is definitely longer than the right. I'll give Sanchez a 3.5 on the basis that it would have been a 4.5 or 5 if he would have asked me more about how I wanted my haircut besides do you want a little hair on your sides or almost no hair on your sides. I want to give it five stars because I love every aspect of this shop except one. The hair cuts. But I love everything else so much I don't care. I always ask for just a little taken off and end up with a lot taken off. But I am so busy staring at the strange turtle or watching a fight on TV to care. He has never given me a bad cut, he just takes a little more off than I want. Bit it's hair, it grows back and everytime it does, I'm right back in his chair again. Tip the man. Just because he doesn't charge much doesn't mean you shouldn't tip him. I usually hand him $30 and walk out. I'm not exactly sure how much the hair cuts cost.
