Inside of Penthouse
John O.

We've stayed at San Remo about 6 times in the last 15 years. This time we stayed in the Penthouse. What I like about this place is that it's affordable and clean, the staff is always friendly, the location makes Columbus walkable and there's a great Italian restaurant on the first floor. If the weather cooperates the Penthouse's outdoor area is a great place to invite a couple of friends and enjoy the view The place has been this way since we started coming

Solid choice for an affordable stay near fisherman's wharf! I really enjoyed my stay here. This place is something between a hotel and a hostel. You have private rooms with sinks inside and the showers and toilets are shared. The room was cozy and I loved the decor. It's felt like I was going back in time. They have space heaters available which I felt like I needed because I haven't adjusted to how cold it can be in SF! With the heater the temp was perfect. The room is small so it heats up easily. The bathrooms and showers were clean and towels are provided. I never had to wait for a shower or toilet. The desk attendant was so friendly. There is free coffee in the morning as well as drinking water available anytime. Location is a amazing. Just a 5 min walk to fisherman's wharf! It felt safe to walk around outside at night.

So unique and fun! It's like stepping back in time -- we loved exploring the halllways and looking at all the decor and framed photos. The penthouse was such a wild surprise! Our own rooftop patio! Treat yourself to a meal at the Italian restaurant Fior d'Italia below the hotel. Romantic and amazing lamb. We will be back for both!

It's crazy I needed to post this but buyer beware. We were planning a trip to SF next fall 2023. We wanted to get the Penthouse like we did last trip. But get this. Rooms that normally are $88 are $800. This has to be a way to total rip off tourist. Remember this is for a shared bathroom. I even called to verify.

Overpriced for what you get. Cramped, very tiny rooms, with no TVs or much anything else.

Where do I even begin--it was an absolute DREAM staying here. Easily one of my favorite parts of my trip. I was very skeptical at first--the sharing of bathrooms, small rooms, uncertain amenities--but I now know I had nothing to worry about and would recommend this place to anyone that's not afraid of having a different experience and is ok with redefining what they think of as a comfortable hotel. We arrived early. Our room was not available for early check in, but we were allowed to leave our bags until then, so we went out for lunch. Check in was easy. The room was VERY small with no tv or lounging space (other than the bed). Honestly, though, we didn't come all this way to take naps, so it was a good push to get out and explore. The bed was very comfortable and the room was clean and reminded me of home. There was a ceiling fan and a floor one to keep cool. They also supplied ear plugs, as the walls are thin. It was sort of comforting, though, hearing the staff clean up dishes downstairs in the restaurant and hearing the creaking of floors. Again, it felt like home. The bathrooms were kept pristine during our 3 night stay, and there never was a moment when there was a line. There are plenty of other bathrooms on the floor and even on the floor below. Amenities included soap, shampoo, conditioner, towels (which rested on a warmer), makeup remover cloths, cotton swabs, mouth wash, coffee, tea, water, candy, ear plugs, extra blanket in the room, and chair massage on each floor. The corridors of the hotel are also beautiful, with greenery lining the entire ceiling and skylights illuminating nooks and crannies. I found a nice little area at the end of the hall by the window to read, whenever I was too tired to go out. It was perfect. I absolutely love this place.

Double twin room. Super tiny and no bathroom

Disappointed. To be honest, if they warned me the room is tiny and the bathroom and shower are shared before I booked, I might still choose to stay here. However, on their advertisement the room is more spacious than I saw. I understand the hotel try to maintain like original and that's the reason why I would pick it. But don't over-polished it on the advertisement photos Still, I would like to pay the same amount of money to spend a night here. The decorations are ancient, the beddings are very European style, the room is warm and comes with a electrical heater. It's tiny but it's historical and comfy. There are 2 shower rooms and 4 toilets on each floor for sharing. Laundry room on site and light refreshments are offered free in the morning. The location is within the walking distance of fisherman's wharf. If you are an adventurous person, I would recommend this place.

Since we intended to feel and experience the quaintness of San Francisco without being pampered by giant hotel industry, we've decided to try the San Remo Hotel in North Beach. The inconvenience of a shared bathroom on every floor is not for everyone, although the cleanliness, the towel supplies and the over all look of the communal bathrooms are really faultless. The hotel's location played an important factor as well as to why we considered to stay here. The major tourist attractions are stones throw away such as Fisherman's Wharf, Lombard Street, Coit Tower. The Cable Car station on Powell street is just right around the corner, it will take you conveniently all the way to Union Square but for a price! ($6 per ride). In summary, you get what you pay for and so much more, be warned though that rooms are small, the queen bed that we had is a tad short for six footers. Although the stay was adequate, it is a one time deal for me.

They use the word HOTEL and I can't wrap my head around equating THE SAN REMO to a 'hotel' at all. Very European, very warm, extremely clean, welcoming and helpful beyond ANY 'hotel/motel' I've ever lodged in. Every single employee, every one, seemed as though they were so proud of THE SAN REMO and wanted to make sure I was ok with everything. Beautiful! Decor very nicely established. I need to double check....isn't THE SAN REMO on The Register of Historic Places? IT WAS EXACTLY LIKE VISITING A GOOD FRIEND AND STAYING IN THEIR HOME. I had two large bags and I pulled and pushed them up that one flight of stairs without an elevator....who has an elevator in their home? LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION....for me was the key. I was able to walk everywhere without being in a weird touristy environment. It was nice to be at The Wharf but not at The Wharf. Many Americans would find gong down the hall to a private commode room or private shower room uneasy. I think nothing of it. I guess I've traveled way to much to be pigeon-holed into preconceived notions. I reserved a room with a sink in it and that was a great thing for me too do. The always fresh coffee and iced fruit or cucumber waters helped. There were some nice muffins, mints and supplies available. It's a go to for me. The week I was there they seemed to be at full occupancy. There are two floors that I know of...maybe there penthouse is then a separate floor. The first floor is actually the second floor of the building. Please....THE SAN REMO is more than you get most elsewhere in a hotel.

Penthouse rooftop views

This hotel is so cute, full of history, and very authentic! It's the perfect walking distance to fisherman's wharf, pier 39, & Ghirardelli Square! They have yummy coffee in the morning, and the front desk staff is friendly. My only disappointment was on San Remo's website it states the penthouse comes w TV with cable & Netflix, it does not. And when we called the front desk to ask what was up, they had no clue what we were talking about. The rooms seem clean until you stumble across strains or trash left from previous guest. Our bed had an old stain, the patio had an old cup of smoked cigarettes, and the shower curtain has what looked like a blood stain. So other than that, great stay! It's definitely not your typical Hilton Inn

I don't know where to start with this place. It is quaint, inexpensive, centrally located, and riddled with character and history. It is hard to find a hotel in San Francisco where you don't feel robbed. This is a rare gem. It was under $100 a night (it was $90 for a double bed) and for $200, you can get a penthouse on the roof. The shared bathrooms are not a problem, which I being a female was leary about. They are clean and I never ran into anyone or waited in line (and it was a full house). It is VERY quiet. You can hear pots and pans from the restaurant below, but it didn't bother me. The beds are squeeky and the walls are thin- you can almost hear the conversations verbatim of the guests next door. Those are the only possible cons to this place. The hotel has so much character. Alas, no ghosts. It isn't creepy. Yes, it was build in the early 1900's (1910's) but it is so cute and warm- very Victorian- and really does have a true at-home feel. The bathrooms actually help make it feel more homey. The employees at the front desk are nice and informative- good customer service. Bottom line, I am going to stay here again and again. I would recommend it anyday to anyone who wants to stay somewhere extraordinary.

The check-in process was smooth. The front desk was very helpful in getting us in and filling out a card authorization form. We were surprised by the valet price however - $90 is definitely high. There is no self parking but the prices for the lots nearby are just as high, if not higher for overnight. We really enjoyed our room. It is definitely not the most spacious but felt quite luxurious. We booked a double queen room and were placed in Rm 920. There was limited walking space around the ends of the beds and desk. There was a beautiful view of the courtyard and city. I love that the room was very well-lit. There is ambient lighting and brighter lights you can turn on next to the beds. My friends and I loved the window that separated the bathroom from the sleeping space. It was quite comical and made getting ready for a night out very fun. There blinds for both the bathroom window and outside window were motorized which was a nice touch. The beds were pretty comfortable but nothing too special - I appreciate them having a bunch of pillows. The mini fridge and coffee bar felt pretty luxe and were much fancier than those are other hotels I've stayed at. There were plenty of outlets throughout the room and next to the beds. The whole vibe of the hotel feels very sleek and modern. The hallways are lit with a ambient blue. The inside of the elevators are themed which is super cute for pics. The gym is very nice too, loaded with more than your typical treadmill and elliptical. The lobby felt clean and had little robot things scooting around that apparently are used for room service. I would definitely stay here again so I can explore what I didn't get to see on my short stay!

I always get a king room and I've stayed on so many floors, The rooms are consistently clean and well maintained. I've never had a bad room experience in all of my stays. That has a lot to do with the amazing housekeeping crew. They come in daily to refresh and reset the room, So when I come in, the bed is made, the bathroom is refreshed everything is in place and reset. Not once have I ever had to ask for anything to be sent up to my room. It's all already taken care of. And let's talk about the breakfast setup! Because this is one of the best hotel breakfast I've ever had in my life. There's a hot bar with bacon, sausage and potatoes and eggs and it rotates daily. There's a yogurt bar with fresh fruit and even hard boiled eggs, there's always oatmeal with toppings. There's a center island filled with all of the carbs you can think of even tortillas. The bananas are always just ripe and that's rare. And there are two coffee stations one by the breakfast area and one by the front entry. I love the coffee! I really like the walkability of this hotel too! It's only a block from my office and very close to Oracle stadium as well as being close to the embarcadero walkway. I cannot say enough great things about this hotel and the crew. I love staying here and will always highly recommend this location. Tell them that I sent you! However, from the very beginning to end ranged from confusion, annoyance, to plain nightmare. The check in process was confusing and and cumbersome. I was given no check in information, and there was no front desk. The intercom at the front door did not even work, and I had to call their actual "front desk" who apparently said they did not have my information on file and made me go through these annoying steps just to find my hotel room key in a lock box. The most frustrating and nightmarish experience came the next day when I lost the hotel room key (a physical key). I called the "front desk" several times but received no answer then finally got one after about 10 minutes. When I told the man at the "front desk," he told that he would have to speak to the housekeeper. After waiting for another 10 minutes, he informed me that I would be getting fined $200 for the lost room key, which is plain ridiculous, since they didn't have a replacement key (other than the housekeeper's key). I understand a $25 or $50 fee for a lost key but $200 for a freaking key???! After waiting for about 40 minutes total, he finally walked over with my replacement key and begged me not to lose it since that would mean the housekeeper can't even get in (how laughable). What's worse was that the other guests were able to use their phone or a passcode to get in since all the room had e-locks. When I asked the man at the "front desk" why I needed a physical key, he said that not all of the e-locks were working--including the one for my room. What a load BS. A horribly dingy hotel that can't even get its most basic sh*t together. Stay at this incompetently run hotel at your own risk or better yet find much better options.

Amazing Service. Good Value. Butler Service…read more I came to the Bay Area for a relative's 80th birthday and booked The St. Regis because it was the only Forbes Five-Star rated hotel in San Francisco. I'm usually hesitant to stay at American hotel chains' "luxury products" because they often just feel like Marriotts with nicer tile (most new Ritz-Carltons, for example). I found the St. Regis to actually offer the kind of luxury service that is often missing in American hotels. I arrived fairly early, around 11:00 a.m., and the staff were incredibly friendly, accommodating both an early check-in and late check-out, along with a room upgrade. Prior to this stay, I didn't really understand the purpose of butler service, but they were kind enough to gift-wrap the presents for the birthday party I was attending while I booked a massage and walked around the city. The spa at the St. Regis is fairly large, with an indoor heated pool (well designed), a gender-separated steam room (out of order during my visit), and a sauna. I will say the spa could use an expansion or renovation. The "relaxation room" felt a bit like a repurposed salt room, and the men's lounge basically just had tea and snacks. The massage itself was great, and everyone there was extremely friendly. What really impressed me was the service. I casually asked whether they had bath salts available for use in my room, and within 30 minutes of leaving the spa, bath salts, bubble bath, and bottled water were delivered to my room without my needing to make a special request. Great attention to detail. I walked through the gym and it seemed large enough for a full circuit workout, with plenty of equipment. I do wish the hotel had more dedicated lobby or guest lounge areas. The check-in area, bar, and restaurant all seemed to blend together into one shared space, which felt fairly busy in the evening when non-guests came in for happy hour. The bar was nice but honestly expensive and not especially memorable. I was a bit surprised by some of the clientele (there were what I assumed to be a couple "working ladies" at the bar who I wonder if their services were less than the cost of breakfast in hindsight), though very friendly occasionally felt slightly out of sync with the otherwise polished atmosphere of the hotel. I didn't try the restaurant for dinner. The hotel does offer a complimentary car service around the local area, though unfortunately it was booked when I needed it. Breakfast was expensive, easily over $100 per person for a fairly normal order, but it was very tasty. The Eggs Benedict were perfectly cooked and included truffle, which was fantastic. The room was clean and comfortable. I do think it could have used a deeper scrub, though I admit my standards may be skewed by an exceptional housekeeper at home. There was also a slight musty odor. It was not on the level of a room at an average Belmond property or the former Mandarin Oriental Miami, but it was spacious and perfectly comfortable for one person. I'm not entirely sure whether St. Regis considers itself directly competitive with those brands. In summary, the service is what makes this hotel worthy of five stars. They seem genuinely happy to accommodate nearly anything you might need or even casually mention wanting. Personally, I find San Francisco itself dirty, stressful, expensive, and rough around the edges, so having a hotel that felt calm, polished, and attentive made a huge difference in my trip.

It was SF restaurant week so we ordered the $90 3 course meal for dinner at the hotel restaurant Astra. We ordered the duck cannoli (ok tasting but the duck is cold), braised short rib (very good! Love the polenta) and the brussel sprouts (menu said it was gremoleta/garlic/parmesan flavor but it ended up being gochujang flavor and it was overly sauced). Was not a huge fan. The hotel is dog friendly. They give you a bed and bowl and treats. The pet fee is steep at $200 per stay. There is the Yerba Buena gardens across the street (5 minute walk) to take your dog out. The park is clean with lots of grass. This was one of the deciding factors of us picking this hotel because it's hard to find grass area in the city. They allowed me late check out at 5pm which is awesome!! Also, they have a chi hair dryer which is very powerful. The hotel used to be quite a few other properties, so while they may have decorated it, it's not the luxurious experience we've had at other hotels. The property doesn't really have a real lobby, spa, and the restaurant is average, as in the quality of the food was just not top notch, and they have access to the best ingredients. They only have two elevators and are quite slow, at a busy time this can be quite annoying. The room itself was small, no real furniture, would have been nice to have a sofa and table with two chairs. There was no dresser. The bathroom was great for one, but small for two. The shower didn't have a bench, no his or her's sinks. The bed when we got into it was super soft and not supportive, when we called they did something really odd and put a board on the mattress and then a topper. I guess they have a guest that asks for this. Why didn't the service people know they have a firm version of the mattress topper they could have switched for us. We didn't have the best sleep. Again, usually the Four Seasons beds are amazing. While this property doesn't charge regular Four Seasons prices, it also doesn't deliver the experience and it would be a shame if the brand started doing this.
