A magical stay! I had such an amazing time here. Upon walking in, I didn't really know what I was getting myself into. Yes, there is a slight musty smell and the floor is creaky but don't let that deter you! I felt like I was in Paris or a Stanley Kubrick Film. Exciting! Definitely no frills, all personality. The free sherry in the lobby is such a cute touch. Definitely not for a traveler looking for luxury. I love the antique/vintage aesthetic. Staying here was such a nice change from the cookie cutter corporate hotels I usually stay at for work trips. The location is also A+++++. SO many great restaurants, bars and cafes within walking distance. I felt like it was a fairly safe area. My room at the hotel was super quiet and I kept the windows cracked to keep it cool. If it got to cold, they had additional blankets in the closet that did the trick. The shower got hot hot hot which I love. Bed and pillows were super comfy. Not a ton of staff on site but I wasn't a needy guest. I could really go on and on about this place I loved it so much. Unfortunately it's not accessible, as the only way up is the stairs and you gotta lug your own luggage! read more

Quaint is probably the best way to describe this hotel. Unlike the big chain hotels they dont offer a lot of accustomed amenities such a/c, microwave, refrigerator or big screen tvs. What they do offer is early 1900 charm with Asian accents. Sherry service from 6pm to 10. A shower no bathtub. Stairs no elevator. Small screen tv. The rooms are clean and they have a portable fan for cooling the warm afternoons. Our room was located facing Columbus street. Lots of character is offered in this little area of North Beach called Little Italy. Located close enough to walk to Fisherman's wharf. One block from China Town. Lots of restaurants, pizza joints and bakeries. As with most big cities San Francisco has its share of homeless residents throughout the city. This area where the hotel had a few. They seem to come to life at night and can be heard from 10pm on through midnight then it stills down. read more

A small dark doorway between Stella's Bakery and Calzone's Restaurant is where you will find the entrance to Hotel Boheme. There is actually a canopy with their name and street number on it that extends over the sidewalk. It's easy to miss if you are not paying attention. Step inside to darkness and walk up a flight of narrow, creaking stairs to the lobby check in level. Our room was one more short flight of stairs up to room 201. I was glad to see the room with light coming in from the windows looking out onto Columbus Street. After adjusting to the surroundings, I grew to appreciate the unique, nostalgic feel of the hotel. For instance: tiffany lamps, the parasol umbrella light shade, black and white photos of 50's era poets, real room keys that open up heavy wooden doors, sherry left out for guests each evening. And very kind and accommodating hotel staff. The room is quite small, but we made it work. Nice thick and fluffy bath towels. Comfy bed with soft sheets. Lots of hot steaming soft water from the shower. I liked a room looking out to Columbus and taking in activity. It gets very noisy, so ask for a room that doesn't face the street if you can't deal with noise. The location in this North Beach neighborhood is perfect. The area is filled with energy and lots of activity. Bordered by China Town and in the middle of so many wonderful Italian restaurants, you are steps away from great dining. It's less than a mile walk to Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39 and Pier 33. A short walk to catch a trolley. Things to consider when staying here: no a/c (a fan helped; needed to deal with the warm afternoon sun), no fridge, no microwave, no coffee pot (the upside is that our morning coffee and pastries were from Stella's), only an armoire with one small drawer, no elevator. Homeless is everywhere in the city and this area has a share of it. Knowing the upsides and the downsides, you decide if Hotel Boheme is right for you. read more

So before anything, FYI: This place is NOT going to be for everyone. If you're looking for the most modern and traditional accommodations, this may not be the best fit for you. It is clearly geared towards a more creative and open minded type. The vibes are very European, beatnik, bygone era but in a good way. I don't want to give the wrong impression since the rooms are comfortable, clean, and do have decent amenities. You do have to be ringed in when you first arrive so be prepared to ring the doorbell. once inside you will be greeted with a narrow set of stairs. They're actually charming and immediately give you a sense of the place but know they're steep and old fashioned and as far as we could tell it's the only way to go up so take notice. check in was very friendly and they put out sherry after 4pm for a couple hours for guest to have if they so desire. On theme, know that they give you an actual key to access your room so none of that card key business here. There is no a/c in the rooms but the windows do open, and there's a fan provided that keeps things cool, and a small heater vent that can be manually turned on and off. It's in a very lively location so be prepared for lots of noise, but we still managed to get proper sleep and the actual hotel is very quiet and private, like we barely saw any other guests. There's tons to eat and do around, so while not for everyone or families it's really a great place for anyone looking to appreciate vintage charm. read more

This is NOT a business traveler hotel. It is quirky, beautiful, historic, clean, updated and the staff obviously love their hotel. We stayed in the Allen Ginsburg room. Great retro bathroom (lots of yellow/black tile). One of the best parts was also a bit of a drawback.... our room looked out onto Columbus avenue and all the local color. We also heard that local color into the night. But I think it was worth it. Next time (and there will be a next time) we may opt for an interior room. Fun place to stay. read more

It all depends upon what soothes your soul and for us, Hotel Boheme provides it in heaps. It has a superb location, charm, oodles of bohemian hip-factor, compelling black & white framed photographs of North Beach in the 50's, colorful wall paint, exotic ceiling shades, wall-to-wall carpeting, a twisty stair-case with a wonderful wood banister, generous check-in/out policy and very nice helpful staff, with a special nod to Richard. If you are looking for an elevator, roomy rooms, AC or a coffee maker, the Boheme isn't for you. Firstly, SF weather rarely requires air conditioning and a fan is provided...the stairs can be a challenge but if you pack light, you'll make it. Why have a coffee maker in a room when the best cafes are directly outside in the neighborhood? ...and anyway, there really isn't room for all that. Hotel Boheme is filled with history; it may be the last of its kind in North Beach....can easily recommend. Consider the top floor (2nd) and talk with staff to discuss the various rooms. read more

I spied this place from a lookout point in the area, while we were staying at the Hotel Vertigo, and was immediately taken in by its charm. My friend and I both mentioned how we'd like to stay there in the on a future trip. Flash forward a few months and we had the pleasure of doing so. The outside of the building catches ones eye with its bright green color and signature font, but the allure doesn't stop there. We opened the door and were greeted by a flight of narrow stairs. (The lack of an elevator added to the quirkiness of this place) Once we reached the top of the stairs we came upon a pocket lobby that was amusingly unique. It reminded me of something David Lycnh might dream up. The polite mature gentleman that helped us was a sweetheart. Very informative. We had an inside room that faced a breezeway of sorts with two queen beds. It was quiet and isolated. I'm sure the street side would be more lively. It was a snug space with just enough room for our luggage. I loved the colors and decor they chose for our room. So calming and cozy. It had a nice feeling. The bed was extremely comfortable. I had best nights sleep that I've ever had in a hotel. The bathroom was adorable and spotless. They do not have A/C, as most older hotels in San Francisco don't, because the summers are so temperate, but a portable fan was included in the room for when it got little stuffy. No in-room coffee but a worthy coffee shop is around the corner. The offering of a cordial of sherry in the early evening was welcome. The location happens to be in one of my favorite hoods, North beach, which has many dinning options within walking distance. My favorite park, Washington Square is blocks away. They let us store our bags when we went exploring after checkout on our final day. We LOVED this boutique hotel and have already recommended it to friends. I look forward to staying again. A cool, quirky boutique hotel. Very comfortable with friendly helpful staff in an excellent North Beach location. A couple of blocks from Chinatown, a short walk to Russian Hill, a 10 minute walk to wharves and ferries, in a neighborhood filled with delightful bars, coffee shops, and restaurants. Our only critique, the reason for four stars instead of five, was the scent of what may have been aging carpets. Not overwhelming, but not pleasant, either. Kind of like the odor of your aged grandmother's house in need of carpet cleaning. Will likely stay here again next time in San Francisco. read more

Hotel Boheme is right in the center of all the activity in North Beach. It's old, small, quirky, and fun. Folks who run the place are friendly and willing to help you get to know this unique neighborhood without being overbearing. Choices for restaurants within walking distance are abundant. Italian rules the day as this is San Francisco's traditional Little Italy district, and some of the best food in the city can be found within a radius of a half mile from the Hotel Boheme. To be sure...this isn't a traditional hotel. There is no parking lot. You will need to find a public garage, and there is one on Vallejo Street about two blocks up from the hotel. You enter through a tiny doorway off of Columbus Avenue and climb a steep set of stairs to a small 2nd floor lobby. From there, you will more than likely climb another steep set of stairs to your small room. There is no elevator You actually use a key to enter your room, not an electronic card. There is no air conditioning (it's San Francisco). There is a tiny TV. But the rooms are immaculately clean and colorful with pictures and art celebrating the North Beach Bohemian lifestyle of the 1950's and '60's. Open your window late at night and revel in the sounds of a great cosmopolitan city. It makes me sleep like a baby. If you want to try something different try the Hotel Boheme. Go there with a different mindset, relax and enjoy yourself. read more

Holy crap I love this hotel so hard. We've stayed here twice and I basically consider it home in my heart. The delicious little sherry cordials from 6-10pm welcoming us on arrival and then sending us back out on our way, the seriously romantic "mosquito nets," the chianti bottles of flowers, the tiny but functional bathrooms. I always feel one thousand percent more creative the moment I step into my room. I love that they don't charge your card at all till you leave. I love that they automatically upgrade return guests. I love that they're across the street from Mona Lisa, a block from Specs and City Lights, and a refreshing walk from delicious dimsum in Chinatown. There's decent 24 hour parking near the police station on Vallejo. Or just come on a Sunday night/Monday and park for free at a meter. I like to just pretend this street is all of San Francisco. It's old. It's small. It's in the heart of North Beach. North Beach is in the heart of stripper/barville. So, I wasn't expecting much. And, we booked this place months in advance due to Bay to Breakers. Whoop! They also let me take a hooker bath! Due to participating in B2B we were about 4 hours late for our check-out. The nice folks there didn't throw our stuff out, but rather neatly packed us up. So, by the time we drug ourselves back, they even gave us towels and let us use their office bathroom to freshen up... that alone gave me warm fuzzies. We liked this place, it's convenient, and dangerously located above Stella pastries. read more

This hotel is very unique, and location could not be better. Nestled in between late night cafes and little restaurants, you can sit outside and people watch for breakfast/lunch/dinner. It's right next to b of a and wells fargo, so really convenient. The rooms are small, but then again, you're only there for two nights, its not like you're carting in a bunch of suitcases and furniture. The owner is super nice and helpful, and funny. They have a little old bottle of cheap sherry so you can do some pre-drinking before your actual drinking- nice. The room we got was cozy- although the walls were an ugly peach color. I refuse to stay anywhere other than Hotel Boheme when in San Francisco. Unless my work is putting me up, then I don't really have a choice in the matter. And once I had to stay downtown for a night cuz Hotel Boheme was sold out. I fell in love with the simplicity of Hotel Boheme; there used to be no television machines, and there are no crazy amenities (except free booze- sherry- and really personalized service). The thing is that the rooms are quite quaint. You have to get one facing out on Columbus or there is almost no point in stayin' at this hotel. I love to sit by the window smoking a cigarette and reading a book, looking up every so often to see who is eating at Panta Rei or how fast the sun is setting. My wife and I and sons, ages 13 and 16 stayed at Hotel Boheme twice over the past week on consecutive weekends. In between the weekends we were on a college visit to Cal Poly with my older son. I travel a ton with my job, and as a result have gotten into the corporate hotel rut that I wanted a break from. In addition, my wife and I lived 3 1/2 blocks from this hotel in the early 90s. We wanted to hang out in our old neighborhood. After reading the reviews here, we picked Hotel Boheme. We're back home in Nashville today with BIG smiles on our faces. We had a few disappointments on our trip, but none related to this great little hotel. Here's what you don't get at Hotel Boheme, mainly because you don't need it when visiting North Beach: No refrigerator, no coffee maker,no microwave and no big TV. The dining and entertainment options in the area are the reason. If you want to come to North Beach and hang out in your room for hours, this is not the place for you. Stay at the Marriott Courtyard at Fisherman's Wharf (for a lot more $$$ if that's your taste). What you DO get is a clean, pleasantly eclectic, comfortable place to sleep and take breaks between ventures into the city. If you want to get out and explore and enjoy all the city has to offer, this is the perfect 'home base' in absolutely the best location possible, and at a price that can't be beat. When we lived in North Beach, we never even noticed this place, even though it is right next door to Calzone's, a restaurant we used to go to at least twice a month. It has a very small, unassuming entrance that gives you a good idea what to expect on the inside. I've seen comments here about the rooms being small. Please read my response: EVERYTHING is small in North Beach. When we lived here (at 382 Green Street), we rented a two room apartment that was 360 square feet. It was $1025 per month in 1993. Not a typo. In that regard, we found our room for four at Hotel Boheme to be quite roomy and we did just fine. Stan was our host and he was great. On our second visit this week, our Amtrak train from Cal Poly was 1 1/2 hours behind, so we were going to arrive well after the front desk closing time of 11 PM. I called Stan to let him know we were running late. He said, "No problem, I'll wait up for you". And he did wait until we arrived at about 12:15. Awesome service. SF will always be one of our favorite places to visit, and who knows? After the kids get through school, we may even be locals again one day. Until then, when we visit, Hotel Boheme will be our first choice every time. read more

My fiance and I stayed at this charming hotel the night we took our engagement photos at the Sutro Baths. Stan was so friendly; he guided us to a cheaper parking garage in North Beach before we arrived at the hotel and cheerfully checked us into our room - he even upgraded us to a corner room after hearing we recently got engaged! The room was very charming - they have an old TV the size of a present-day Kindle, antique bathroom fixtures, and curious photographs and artwork. It was the perfect size for us. You can hear the sounds (and smell the deliciousness) of North Beach on the street below. The glasses of sherry were much appreciated after coming in from the cold. I loved the antique wardrobe and the two sitting chairs by the bay windows. If you're looking for in-room entertainment and trendy ambiance, this is not the place for you - but if you want a quirky, warm, comfortable room with character and proximity to one of the most charming neighborhoods of SF, this is your hotel! Also, my favorite touch was the red awning outside the hotel (the only way you'll identify it, most likely) with a huge neon VACANCY sign. Precious. read more

In its current incarnation, it opened a decade ago, designed as an homage to the bohemian style of North Beach in the late-1950s. High-ceilinged rooms lining a narrow hallway are small but brightly painted and nicely furnished; those in the front face Columbus Avenue and are noisy late into the night. The modernized baths, with showers only, are claustrophobic. Sherry is served in the miniature lobby every afternoon. Rates range from $149 - 169.00. The staff is friendly and helpful, but anyone who thrives on upscale hotel amenities will be unhappy here. Awesome place!! Spent Christmas here. As soon as I walked in the front door I was transported back to an era of San Francisco long gone. I ascended the stairs and checked in with easy. The staff was most friendly!! I entered my room which was small however very comfortable. A step back in time!! I had a room right on Columbus the noise was not bothersome to me. I'm torn. The room is small, but true to the area buildings. Each is uniquely decorated with some sort of beat-poet-bohemian-something-or-other. The bathrooms are even smaller, but mantain the bohemian theme. The service is great. The room is great for what it is and where it is. Cozy, romantic, Parisian-esque. The problem: It is VERY loud. The street noise climaxes as the bars close at 2am. Just when you thought you could relax, dumptrucks and buses start rolling though around 5am. That is if you are not disturbed in the middle of the night by a passing fire engine. And forget about street parking, just open you wallet and find a lot. read more

I stayed here this past July on a brief, sweet respite from Austin's typically oppressive summer. The location couldn't get better, cute room, and plenty of hot water for a good long shower after spending all day hoofing it throughout the city. I was visiting over the course of two weeknights, so street noise wasn't an issue for me. The hosts were very helpful with bus info and were full of suggestions for entertainment and dining. It doesn't have the typical big chain hotel amenities, and dang, those stairs are steep- but if you want to stay somewhere that screams North Beach, look no further. I know I'll be back. Just need to remember to leave more room in my suitcase for the requisite trip/pilgrimage down the block to City Lights. read more

There is no mention of no elevator on their web site or mention when booking. Rooms start on the 2nd floor up and just a staircase. Would we recommend this hotel, not a chance, we had to make other arrangement's across the bay which was a blessing, they had an elevator, air and a 'free' shuttle to Amtrak. We had booked 6 nights but found other reservations after seeing the room. Brushing your teeth, you hit the wall, T.V. was about 18 inches, maybe 20 at best. I would not recommend this hotel, not a chance, we had to make other arrangement's at the Sheraton, and then spent a few nights at Hotel Opal. I'm usually the type who stays at the $80-100 chain places that give you free breakfast when I travel... but I wasn't the one who booked this place. It's quaint, and right in the heart of the city. This is no Ritz, but the rooms are clean, the hotel staff are great, and you cannot beat the location. If you are staying for several days get a 5 or 7 day visitor passport from a Muni station. The hotel is located at the intersection of Stockton and Columbia where you can catch a bus to pretty much anywhere in the city. No rental card needed for a stay here. TONS of fantastic restaurants around the hotel and the area is very safe. It is just a walk to Chinatown which was fantastic. There are only 16 rooms so book early. Please note, because of the age of the hotel there is no elevator. If you have any sort of physical disability, climbing the stairs would be difficult. its only 1-2 set of stairs, but they are steep. read more

I was only visiting San Francisco for a couple of days in August and stayed at the Hotel Boheme. It is on a cute street with lots of cafes and shops. Checking in, it is a walk up some steep steps to the 2nd floor lobby. The guy who checked me in was wonderful and filled me in on the wifi password and got me set up with my room. They still use real keys! I was ready for some dinner and this is in a perfect place because it is right next to Little Italy and China Town. I ate at a great little Italian place around the corner. When I left for San Francisco, my dad told me to keep my eyes open for City Lights bookstore and Hotel Boheme is just a couple of blocks from it!! There is no air conditioning and the room was a little stuffy and warm when I got into my room. I opened the window and it didn't take long for the room to cool down. There is a fan provided so that helps too! The room was really nice. The shower was great with lots of hot water and great water pressure. I will stay here again. I'm in SF for business - meetings and an industry convention, and after shaking umpteen hands, making surface-y small talk with that smile pinned to my face, it's so nice to come back to Hotel Boheme for a refreshing breath of something sincere & genuine. The rooms are simply appointed - a small table doubles as an impromptu desk, an oscillating fan keeps a breeze, the bathrooms are in deco style with fluffy white towels, and an antique armoire smells exactly like my grandmother's. Maybe I'm wooed by nostalgia and a never-ending quest for something real, a little shabby with history, but I would prefer to stay here than in the myriad of super-hotels just down the street around Union Square. One word: lovely! I wanted to show my boyfriend one of my favorite cities, and I took my time selecting the right hotel for our stay - we both couldn't be happier that we went with Hotel Boheme. Our room overlooked Columbus Avenue's Italian cafes and nightlife. The decor is inspired by the history of North Beach which gives every aspect of the hotel extra personality (there is a history of the building near the concierge). The lighting, decor, and quaintness of Hotel Boheme undoubtably set the romantic tone that carried on through our stay in the city. The only thing to take into consideration is that this is an older building: if you're overlooking the street and have the window open you can hear foot traffic down below. Also, it takes a little finagling to get the water in the shower and sink heated but the pipes have probably been there longer than we have, so totally understandable. Not to mention when we called downstairs to Stan he was super helpful and we got our water hot soon after. Oh - and as many other reviewers pointed out - complimentary sherry! Yummmmmmmmy.
