Disgusting and flavorless. Taco Bell literally has more flavor. Also received my order incorrect, and instead of issuing me refund, they wanted me to go back and pick up my missing tomatoes for a burrito, that would be cold by the time I got back, and then I would have to CUT OPEN my burrito to add the flipping tomatoes. To top it off, my burrito was covered in some soup looking substance. They said it was cheese sauce... a sauce is not complete liquid. Didn't eat it, lost out on 17$ as well. Had lunch with friends here today. Ordered the enchilada trio lunch special. The food was hot And matched the menu description. The chips and salsa are provided free. Tasted good. Free refill on the chips and salsa. My friends had the Texas fajita lunch combo. It was also as described. The shrimp was cooked perfectly. The decor is fun and inline with what I expected from a Mexican restaurant. There is outside dining available as well. Parking is free and lots of room. When you walk into San Marcos, you feel welcome and always greeted by a smiling hostess that is ready to seat you. As a local, San Marcos has been a staple to our favorite "out to eat places." We have been regular customers here for several years and I have not had a bad experience yet! There is table seating, booths, and a bar where you can sit. It is a comfortable, upbeat atmosphere with very kind staff. A staff member will have complimentary chips and salsa on your table just seconds after you have been seated. I really enjoy the great service! The facility is always clean which is a must for me. The menu is incredibly large, meaning there is something for everyone! The portions are very generous. I believe the pricing is fair, especially for all the food you get. I am so glad to see San Marcos succeed. I highly recommend San Marcos for lunch, dinner or a strawberry margarita!! read more

We've lived in Florida, California and now Michigan, and this place is hands down the best Mexican in West Michigan. Don't bother trying the others (we did...the rest were dismal disappointments). Service was good. No consistency with their salsa and guacamole. Every time I go their it's either really good or not so good. What really threw me for a loop is they charge almost $9.00 for a well rum and Pepsi. Are you kidding me! Hobos doesn't even charge that much. Theirs are $5.00. I am appalled that they are taking advantage by charging that much when you can buy a half gallon for between $13 and $21. No business in Muskegon charges that much. Rediculous!!! I recently dined at San Marcos. Upon entering I was promptly seated and offered bowls of chips and salsa. The chips were thick; the salsa watery. I ordered a cervesa and a small order of guacamole which were quickly delivered. For my entree I had three enchiladas, one each of chicken, beef and cheese. They were served with rice and beans, the plate being nothing too appetizing. For Whitehall it probably "filled the bill", but I've frequently had much better elsewhere. read more

The food was good, better Mexican than one usually gets in Michigan. The main criticism is that we were not allowed to move outside tables together for a larger group. They were insistent in not allowing the tables to be combined, even after we had already moved them. They claimed they are concerned about the tables breaking. The tables are reasonably nice, glass-topped, but nothing special and not particularly fragile unless one tipped them over. I've never seen such a policy at other restaurants. I would think they would want to make their customers comfortable and allow the group to socialize together. Apparently, the owners care more about their tables than their customers. read more

The atmosphere is nice and service is always friendly - but - the food is hit or miss a lot of time. I've ate here a few times over the years (~10) and it's either REALLY good or bland/super salty. There's really no in between, real crapshoot. We are on vacation in this area and we thought some Mexican food would be great. I had fajitas and the vegetables were over cooked. My friend had the enchiladas and they sauce was more of a tomato sauce instead of enchilada. However, the worst part was the guacamole. It looked and tasted like it came out of a plastic bag. Just left San Marcos and will not be back ever. Let me explain. My wife and I moved to Montague 3 years ago from Grand Rapids. We love authentic cuisine. Early on, we discovered San Marcos and have been a regulars since. We were sad to find out a few weeks ago as COVID cases were rising rapidly in West Michigan as we drove up to San Marcos for dinner one evening to find a sign in the window that they had to close because some of their staff had contracted COVID. Tonight I know why. My wife and I have been trying to be super careful in our current COVID environment. We do this out of not only concern for ourselves but also thinking about others that might have underlying health concerns. We walked in and were shown a table. I was impressed that all of the staff were masked up and they had the tables spaced out accordingly. My back was to the door and I did not see it, but a couple walked in with no masks and looked around the restaurant with a defiant look on their face as if to dare someone to say something. Sadly, staff said nothing and they were shown a table behind us. My wife caught the man's eye, and if you know my wife, the look on her face said it all. She basically gave him the stink eye. Now mind you she never said a word to the gentleman. So he decides to walk his mask-less self over to the basket on the ledge next to me to "get a few napkins" out of the basket. He looked at my wife and sneered as he was literally right over my shoulder. My wife calmly said, "Sir if you insist on not wearing a mask, please at least stay 6' away." To which the gentleman said loudly, "lady, you got a real problem!" Then he went to his table and began berating my wife loudly to his guests. Then the manager/owner of San Marcos came over to his table and greeted him warmly like and old friend. All the while the man continued to berate my wife for asking him to either wear a mask or stay 6' away. We finished our meal and paid our bill and began to leave. As we were leaving the man balled up his fist at me and said, "Go ahead say one word to me!" Well, I have to admit I said two words and they were not nice. What a horrible experience, and to see the management of this restaurant treat this customer like an old friend and not enforce masks lets me know this is not a business I will ever patronize again. Sad, because their food and service is great. COVID is bringing out the best and the worst of us. read more

Great service. I got the fajitas which were a large portion and very good. My husband and father in law got wet burritos which were too wet, absolutely soaked. The portion sizes were huge but not worth it when the burritos were dripping. I loved the wallpaper and very nice vibe in there. Would try it again, just avoid wet burrito maybe. read more

I had Grandchildren visiting and I'm not used to having such hungry mouths to feed. I had run out of food at the house so we decided to place a take out order from San Marcos. I'm not that proficient with a cell phone and couldn't figure out how to order. So I tried to call and the voice mail was full. So one of my Grandchildren ordered for us. It said 25 minutes to pickup. It also said cash only. So I had to search for enough money to pay cash for a sizeable order. We got there just at the 25 minute time. They hadn't even started fixing it. We stood there and waited for another 35 minutes. When I started to pay, there is a credit card machine. I was told, sure, you can use a credit card!!!!! I was given lots of excuses about why the order was so late ---people didn't show up, host not there, blah, blah blah. When we got the food homme, it was SOOOOO salty that it was almost inedible. We are it because we were very very hungry. Not sure I'll be back. Beware of take out orders. They shouldn't have taken my order if they couldn't fill it within the time frame.
