I come here often , but today I had the absolute BEST service from a young man named Lucas ! Lucas is hands down the best server I've ever had here ! Horrible greasy hard shell tacos. Waiter was twitchy and couldn't answer any questions. He had no idea what barbacoa tacos meant. He coughed like he had TB without covering his mouth. Met a few friends last night for Taco Tuesday at El Tapatio. They were fairly busy and seemed a little short staffed - a lot of the tables hadn't been cleaned off when we arrived - and we waited a few seconds for them to clear off a booth for us. Chips came out the second we sat down. Maybe it's because I was hungry, but I thought the chip basket seemed small. Salsa was delicious. One of the people in our group doesn't like cilantro, and there was none in this salsa. We placed our drink order and the server came back right away with our drinks and then took our food order. Then we waited. Chip basket ran empty and we couldn't find our server, so we finally went up to the bar and asked for more. A few minutes later our food came out, which was perfect. No complaints about the food.. it tasted great and was certainly filling and didn't break the bank. I'd definitely come back here.. but maybe not on a Tuesday when everyone wants tacos and the servers are super busy. read more

When we questioned her about it and told her we texted the restaurant and they clearly stated happy hour starts at 1pm, she said there was no one to contact about that at the restaurant. I got chicken fajitas, peppers and onions were cooked well but the flavor was bland and the only other items were rice (bland) and beans (tasted like they came from a can). Almost everything is freshly made, in house, and they will alter items to match your preferences (if necessary). The place is small but very quaint and clean. How was El Tapatio in Muskegon, Mi voted #1 for Mexican Restaurants on Mlive? In the entire state?? Upon arrival we were told to sit anywhere, boy did we make a mistake! Our server must have been half asleep and moved at a snails pace, if not slower. The chips were decent, if you like plain tortilla chips with no salt. The salsa had the taste of canned crushed tomatoes and nothing else. We tried jazzing the salsa up with salt, pepper and the Tapatio hot sauce that was on the table. Side note: the Tapatio hot sauce is amazing! We even asked the server for some lime wedges to add a little more flavor but the server forgot. Our intention was to sample a couple different things to see what landed El Tapatio as #1 so we started with the Deluxe chips and cheese (tortilla chips, cheese, lettuce, tomato and sour cream) after asking the server for plates and silverware he returned with silverware only and had to be reminded two more times for plates. The deluxe chips were not terrible, generic at best. Next up we ordered the baby house wet burrito. Now, I haven't worked as a server or in a restaurant, but I am guessing the proper etiquette is to clear used plates instead of setting the new dish on top of the dirty dish? Yes, that happened. Even with the comment from the server of "uh, I'm just going to put this here". Was so dumbfounded I had to take a picture. As for the house burrito? Unfortunately, it had the same level of taste as the deluxe chips and salsa, boring, which ended our desire to taste anything else. I grew up in Muskegon and now live in Grand Rapids. I saw this place on MLive and decided to route over to Business 31 on my way up North. The place was very easy to get to and right back onto 31 again. It was fairly busy being a Friday night so I sat at the bar. The chips and salsa were okay, nothing great. I ordered the Burrito Del Mar which has marinated shrimp and fajita veggies inside. The bartender suggested topping it with the caso cheese dip so I went with it. Wow, amazing burrito! Veggies cooked just right and the shrimp had great flavor. I'll definitely be back! I was in town visiting family. I had heard good things about this restaurant from them. After researching the business, looking at reviews and reading the menu, I decided to go check it out! Yeah for $.99 taco Tuesdays. We went in on , Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at 11 AM. I wanted to get there as soon as they opened, so as to get everything freshly made. When we got there, the door was locked. I called the number and the person who answered confirmed that they were in fact open and she came to unlock the door. We were invited in and immediately seated. After taking our drink orders, the waitress (Liz) proceeded to bring us our complimentary chips and salsa. Unfortunately, the chips were stale. I called her over and advised her that I had chosen this restaurant because of the great reviews. However, my initial visit was not starting off very well. I explained to her that the chips were stale. She agreed that they were stale by telling us she had eaten some prior to opening up the restaurant. She said that the owner makes the chips fresh daily, but he had not made it in yet. I told her that I would rather leave and come back on another day, in order to not sour my experience. She asked me to hold on for a sec. She went back to the kitchen and re-emerged with a basket of fresher chips. So, we stayed and ordered our food. Between the four of us, we had tacos, nachos and tamales. They were all good. Aside from the minor hiccups, in the beginning, the overall experience was great. Liz's service was good (I hope my tip told her that, too!) and the food was good. I would have given them a 5-star review, if the original chips served to us were fresh! Can't believe this place doesn't have a review on yelp yet... found it through google maps where its got rave reviews... anyways I'll put a plug for it here! I grew up in Tucson, it's hard to find authentic Mexican food - but this is soo much better than anything else within a 40 mile radius (and that includes Grand Haven etc). So its getting 5 stars. Other places like el camino's is more like a huge serving of taco bell doused in over-bearing cumin sauce. El Tapatio serves freshly chopped onion, tomato and cilantro in their tacos, as well as lime wedges - the freshest food I've had since I've been out here. They also have tons of meat choices - the menu is really great. They cover a broad choice from quesadillas to chimichangas and other more traditional and interesting dishes. The prices are very very reasonable too for the quality and options. They also have days with different specials like Taco Tuesdays for $.99. Combo dinner plate is excellent and of course the tacos are just as good, and the chicken enchilada is also great. Has a simple, cozy charming decor, would highly recommend over other local Mexican fare in the area any day. read more

It smelled great the minute we opened the car door in the parking lot. My daughter got to add to her bottle collection with a Mexican Coke (made with cane sugar). I had a plate of very good chile rellenos. The tamales with pork were excellent as well. Tacos can come American style or Mexican style, which I thought was interesting: Mexican is with onions and cilantro, American is cheese & lettuce. Some very odd points though - one of us ordered a Chimichanga and it was all meat, apparently pretty bland meat at that. No sauce, no cheese, no veggies, nothin'! Fajitas came with no rice or beans (although was still a fairly generous portion). Finally the iced tea was made with instant powder (or at least tasted like it). The lone waitress was slammed and service was slow but cheerful. She forgot to take the order of half our party and we had to remind her. On the whole, decent service though. Great spot for Mexican food. Our server Sevastian was great and very attentive. We ordered the fish tacos with the fried taco shells (yum), house wet burrito, fajitas, chimichanga, enchiladas and gorditas. All was delicious and served hot. Will definitely come back when we go camping. read more
