We ate lunch here and then came back for supper. We never do that. The food is good. The pollo ranchero is probably the best I have had. They marinate the chicken overnight and that, along with the flavorful sauce really makes the dish. I got black beans instead of the retried beams and there was no up charge for the swap. They do have lunch specials and I enjoyed the atmosphere. Lunch was on our own. Dinner was with"work people." A member of our dinner party ordered hot tea (Jan). A second member of the party wanted some, but they had given the last tea bag to Jan. They sent someone to the store to get more teabags for her hot tea. San Marcos serves better-than-average Americanized Mexican food. It's quite tasty but don't expect a lot of variety that you might find at a mom-and-pop restaurant. Driving through on way to Fl and saw a sign for the restaurant so decided to stop for lunch. The salsa that comes with the chips has great flavor. Ordered queso con chorizo, and again tasted great. When came the actual meal I was not impressed. Did the creat your own combo, tostada and hard shell taco. Placed an order for carry out (specifically asked if that was alright) so when I got there the restaurant was close to closing time so it was nearly completely empty. I asked to sit at the bar while I waited since the baseball game I was paying attention to was on their tv there. My food comes out on a plate and the guy just dropped it in front of me and walked away before I could tell him it was supposed to be carry out. No chips and salsa. No silverware. Had to get the bar tender to grab me that. Bar tender was nice about it but by the time I would have gotten it wrapped up to take with me it would have been cold so I sat there and ate it. Once I decided to order, I asked if they had black beans instead of refried. She said yes. Proceeded to order my meal. Soft steak taco and Steak burrito. Soon after ordering, my food came. The waitress said hot plate. It was hot. Wish my food was. The food was Luke warm and the sauce over the burrito was Cold. The rice was very little and Luke warm. The black beans didn't arrive, just refried beans. Food was nothing special. I didn't brother to send food back because it wasn't busy and the plate was hot and I didn't want to explain that I wanted hot food. Not bad food or bad service just nothing special. San Marcos is a great addition to the dining options in Smithfield. Apparently, the word is out because we stopped in Saturday night and they were packed. The menu is extensive and covers and covers most of the "Americanized" Mexican favorites as well as some traditional dishes. We tried a range of dishes and were all satisfied. Service was quick, efficient and the staff was friendly. The atmosphere is more upscale than most of the local Mexican places and they have a very nice bar. Give them a try. read more

This restaurant had some of the best service, but there were only 3-4 other patrons in the restaurant at the time we were served. The drinks were tasty, and the Mucho Burrito employed the rare example of bacon wrapped shrimp that weren't cooked till shriveled and tough. The mole was not as flavorful as I would like, and the salsa reminded me of an italian's idea of salsa with the lack of cilantro, tomato chunks or onions. The guacamole was tasty, although it had a similar lack of cilantro and onion. This is a nice Mexican restaurant. We stopped while on a road trip and were pleasantly surprised by the quality and diverse menu. The guacamole was perfectly seasoned with a perfect proportion of lime and cilantro. The Texas margarita on the rocks was top notch. The Elotes Placero was a nice way to experience Mexican Street corn. The corn cobs were rubbed with mayonnaise, queso fresco and chili powder. Two other styles were available. We also had one barbecue but in future would choose all 3 traditional. I ordered the A.C.C. (arroz con camerones) in a half portion (6 shrimp) which was the perfect sized portion. My husband chose the Casuelon, which was a mixto of grilled chicken, steak and chorizo over grilled onions. My son had the mixed fajitas which were a very generous portion of steak, chicken and shrimp. The flan proved to be the perfect finish to a great meal. Favorite Mexican anywhere! The portions are generous,the prices are very reasonable. We brought home a big enough doggie bag for another mea! We travel thru this way and San Marcos is a must! I posed a question to my husband wondering what other restaurants are around Smithfield ,his response was "Why?"He's right there isn't anywhere else we want to try!We had another fabulous meal,entertained and served by the great Raul!
