Second time coming here and I enjoyed it a lot more than the first time. This time I ended up ordering the Camarones La Cocina, a shrimp bowl with rice, lettuce, tomato, onion, pico, and tortillas, and it was great! I wish it came with sour cream or guacamole as it was a little dry, but besides that it was delicious. The serving size was pretty big so I had to grab a box. This dish was a little pricey in comparison to other Mexican restaurants in the area. Service was okay, at the end of my visit my table had to wait a while to pay for our food as staff kept passing by even though we were the only people trying to pay. The queso, red sauce and the salsa and chips were very good. It is the only reason for the second star. On a long drive and had to stop for the night. At 9:30, this was the only non-fast food place open that also wasn't Waffle House. But it had good reviews. Ordered chips and salsa and queso and a chicken burrito. As I said, the appetizer was good. But my burrito was literally half a dozen or so pieces of chicken in a tortilla. Literally nothing else. No lettuce rice cheese beans or anything. I refuse to believe that an authentic Mexican burrito is just the meat and tortilla. I get that 99.9% of the Mexican we order in the states isn't authentic but in all of the places I have been that advertised authentic Mexican cuisine, the burrito had fillings. Staff (including but not limited to, Nicole) are extremely rude and inattentive. It took over 45 minutes to receive our food (which wasn't even that good, the shrimp was so dry). We were okay with the unexpected, long wait but had not expected for the service to be so bad -- the waitress rolled her eyes at us multiple times, left in the middle of us asking where our missing items were to serve other customers (that did not look like us...), NEVER checked on us. Best Mexican cuisine in Johnston county. I try to order something different each time so I can enjoy all of the great food, like combination plates with a variety of food. It's really hard to say what is the best on the menu, but the one item that I always order more than anything else is the La Casina Quesadilla. Made up of a tortilla shell filled with grilled steak, chicken, shrimp, sauteed with onions, and green peppers and served with salad, sour cream and guacamole. This place is about 5 mins from Smithfield shopping outlet and I think it is a very good option for Vegetarian food after the shopping. The most impressive thing in menu is Combos. I ordered the Vegetarian combo with Chili Relleno and Spinach Corn Enchilada. The portions were huge and the food was good. It wasn't outstanding but was neither bad. read more

Very similar to the Garner location, and very good. The chicken soup is famous at the Garner location and does not disappoint here, but be prepared to wait a few extra minutes if you order it since they make it from scratch. Lots of good stuff on the menu, especially if you hit up the Platillos Mexicanos section with the less well known authentic dishes. Not as long a wait as the Garner location but the dining room is a bit cramped. It's in the shopping center with the Wal-Mart on Brightleaf Blvd, if you're having trouble spotting it. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in town. They have robust flavorful food at a great price! I pretty much always get the vegetarian burrito...it is chock-full of veggies and topped with lettuce, pico de gallo, sour cream, and cheese sauce. Their warm chips and fresh salsa are perfect and I gobble them up in no time! We have always had excellent service - and usually the same attentive and informed server (or two). I don't know what happened this time, but YESTERDAY when I took my friend from out of town, we had a new server who wasn't very knowledgeable. She was sweet, but she and/or the kitchen messed up my friend's order and not only were they not apologetic about it, they downgraded her order and charged her more. When I talked to a manager about it, I had to literally argue with her to get her to understand what happened. She never caught on and finally someone came to our rescue.... It was a TERRIBLE experience (the kind you Yelp about, I guess). After yesterday, I'm not sure if I'll go back. I probably will because I love the food and that was one bad experience in at least 10 good ones. :) Yeah, I talked myself into it - I'll go back. Was in town over night on our trip to Hilton Head and picked this restaurant based on Yelp reviews. I was very pleased with the quality of food and drinks that we got, and the waitstaff was very attentive and friendly. The margaritas are delicious and big, a medium is more than enough. I got the steak con camarones and was very satisfied. The food was so flavorful and my steak was cooked perfect. I would definitely recommend if your in the area. read more

I went to this restaurants based on the reviews. Boy was I completely LET DOWN. The only thing good at this place was the chips and salsa. I ordered from the vegetarian menu and my "chalupa" came out as a flat tostata with guacamole on it. I asked if it had onions and the waiter said little. I tasted it and it was LOADED with onions, he offered to take it back and fix it. When the plate came back it was obvious they scrapped it off and piled more lettuce over it. The sauce on my burrito tasted like it came from a can and had too much sugar. The quesadilla was tasteless. It has to be one of the worse places to eat in Smithfield. Very very very disappointed. The inside looked like a bar instead of a place to eat. There were signs everywhere and it was tacky. There were big tv panels everywhere and tons of neon beer signs. Went here on 5/14/16. My wife and I ordered the Fajita Texicana with 2 extra tortillas and split the dish. You get chicken, steak, shrimp and veggies. There was enough for both of us to have 2 tortillas a piece. We really enjoyed it. It wasn't over spiced so you could taste each type of meat. The salsa and chip starter was very good as well. I asked for hot sauce because I like it hot. We were too full to try any dessert. Our waiter was very attentive and took good care of us. Great experience, we will return. read more

Honestly I do not recommend this place. I order "Tacos de Lengua" and they didn't cut the meat correctly the pieces were to big. They still had the skin of the tongue on it I had to take it off myself. And my parents food was way to greasy. The cilantro and unions were mixed in together and those are also supposed to be separated. The only up side is that the staff is friendly and polite. Quit going to La Cocina a few year back because of consistently cold/frozen food being served. Moved away for a few year and stopped by last night, hoping things had changed a bit. It was horrible. Service was ok, but the food...horrible. Cold canned retried bean smeared on a plate was the side for a vegetarian burrito that was wet inside and on the plate...water/oil/juice, I couldn't tell...as it was cold too. We ordered 2 and they were both the same way...wet and soggy. No seasoning that we could tell. Hard (melted) cheese was cold so we know it had sat a while. The kids ordered rice and cheese and they were barely lukewarm. "Nasty" best describes what it looked and tasted like. Scrape the cheese off the plate nasty. Hard rice and cold cheese. The steak quesadilla was ok...steak and cheese. A little grisly but you can mess up cooked to death cheap meat and cheese on a tortilla. Of course if can put 5 min after the rest of the orders. Best part was the Chips and salsa. Be warned it is watery and lacks much "salsa"vibe, but the kids liked it. I will not be going back. Not sure why it gets so much love other than atmosphere. But for $60 I want good food to go with the atmosphere. We did get to family bond over discussions of how bad it still is. read more

I don't know what these good reviews are about. The staff was nice, so the star will go towards that. I got the special quesadilla, which should have been called the soggy quesadilla because when I picked it up, at least a quarter cup of liquid dripped out the sides. The seasoning was bland and the beans looked like they'd been sitting out for a day. My dad got a burrito combo and they were drenched in a foul tasting sauce. 20$ spent for two completely inedible dishes, the only saving grace was the waitress and the chips/salsa and even that combo couldn't salvage the experience. read more

The food was amazing but the service was over the top good and very friendly. The place had a real good vibe. If you haven't been here before or if it's been awhile you need to come for dinner.
