As of 10/30/25 this is the best Mexican restaurant in the area. It's the most authentic food with a very cool atmosphere. Again for this area. I had the Enchiladas Locas which was decent. The restaurant is right across the street from our hotel room, so we chose this Mexican restaurant to the west of city limits. The restaurant may seem pretty busy, granted we went on a Friday evening for dinner, but the service was friendly and fast. San Marcos is known for top-notch quality in their authentic cuisine from south of the border, and it sure didn't disappoint when our food came out from placement of order to the food on the table! As for the drinks, we ordered the Peach Margarita and the Pina Colada Daiquiri - both were made extremely well! My Burrito Marino tasted very wonderful, especially how they grilled the shrimp, onions and mushrooms into a warm flour tortilla. It's quite amazing how the taste and presentation of the burrito is number one quality! It's also a great option for those who, like me, don't eat beans. On the other hand, the Nacho supreme looks gigantic in size. Even though it tastes good according to my partner, there wasn't really to write home about. Even though some items are huge in portions for the dinner menu, I still strongly prefer San Marcos Mexican as a nice sit-down casual restaurant if you choose not to eat in downtown Hastings! read more

I was so happy to find this place. The food was great -- I almost always go with a chimichanga -- and they make nice margaritas. I have always found the servers to be very friendly. The restaurant is very similar to other Mexican restaurants in its decor. In that regard it is a bit mundane, but this is a very minor criticism. I don't know when or if my travels will bring me back to Hastings, but I definitely plan to return to San Marcos. read more

I ordered sangria as a backup - so I haven't had sangria in a while but I wasn't expecting purple grape kool-aid... hubby got a different beer (dosequis) and was quite happy with it. Service is very good, attentive servers. Food came out quickly and was delicious. Pleasantly surprised they have lunch specials on a Saturday. Pop up, heated, private tents in the parking lot allowed for covid safe dining. Called & reserved ours one day in advance. All in all a good experience. Stopped in for dinner after a sporting event. The service was very good. They have a pretty large menu, a lot of the things you'd expect to find on a Mexican restaurant menu, but a few unique things as well. We split the shrimp chimichanga meal. They were tasty, but cut on a diagonal so some of the bites at the narrow end didn't really have any shrimp in them. Friends had chiles rellenos which looked great. read more

The food is super yummy. The place is clean and the staff is friendly and helpful. The prices are comparable to most Mexican restaurants. We were seated immediately and the food was out very quickly on a Sunday afternoon. I didn't get pictures, I wasn't thinking about it. I ordered the burritos mexicanos and my husband got the fajita quesadilla with steak. Both were yummy. The portion size on the burrito was much smaller than the quesadilla of that matters to you. The margaritas are great but make sure you specify size... we didn't say small and they brought the big ones and they aren't cheap. We did drink them though! We will be back in to try some more of the menu. I recommend grabbing some great food soon if you're in the Hastings area. read more

Excellent food, quick seating. The place is deceptively large. Though there were many cars parked along the side and back (only room for maybe 4 cars in front) the place had plenty of tables available. Many booths and also some tables. The menu is large and has all the usual Mexican foods. I have no idea what is "authentic" or "not authentic" -- whereas some who review Mexican restaurants claim to have this knowledge (tho, I doubt it.) The (free) chips and salsa were excellent. Chips were thin, crunchy, not salted. The salsa was slightly spicy, would likely appeal to all, and had chunks of tomato. The frozen house margaritas seemed large ( we ordered the small size), but probably consisted mostly of ice. Flavor was good, but did not seem to have much alcohol (if any). You won't get drunk on two of these. The shrimp fajita was great: $17 (a fair price) for many large shrimp, grilled (w/ grill marks) in an excellent brown sauce, plus the "trimmings" of rice, guacamole, beans, etc plus 3 (small) tortillas. There is no way you could wrap all the shrimp and other stuff into these 3 small tortillas. Not sure if you could ask for more tortillas, but they did not offer. Took home half of the shrimp dish, since this was a fairly large portion. The Pollo Barracho was also excellent: flat pounded chicken w/ other stuff (I didn't order this, so I can't recall the dish exactly). Also plenty large. The only quibble we had was that the lighting was so low. I could not read the menu without going over to the front window to get more light (it was still light out, but after 8PM). The restaurant really should invest in some at-table lighting for us folks who can't read small print without lots of light. Would be good if the tortillas were larger or if they offered more tortillas if you needed them for your dish. This is a very good Mexican restaurant. Highly recommend. read more

My husband asked to go to dinner at a Mexican restaurant for Father's Day, this weekend. So, we decided on one that was down in Hastings, since my daughter's friend said this restaurant doesn't require masks and is 'laid back'. We drove there, and... They said only six people per table. I have five children, which makes us a family of seven, but it was FATHER'S day, 2pm, there were only three other tables in the restaurant with people at them. We hoped they wouldn't make it an issue. They said that we couldn't sit at the SAME table, but that they could seat us 'next to each other'. I wasn't happy - we're a household, not strangers - we rode in a car over, together. But we agreed, since the tables would be near... or so we thought. They then proceeded to seat my husband at a table some distance from the rest of us, ALONE. On Father's Day!! I was Peeved. Off. In capital letters. So I told him to just come over and sit with the rest of us. Immediately the waiter went and got management, who came waving papers from the CDC ('The Law', he said. 'Recommendations', I corrected, 'None of this has gone thru Congress, so therefore it's not a law'.) He insisted he would not let my husband sit with us. "It's like this isn't America, anymore!" I said. The man nodded vigorously. "No, it isn't! He can't stay at this table!" Scared little weasel. He lost our business, forever. So we drove to the next closest Mexican restaurant, which is in Caledonia. ((It was sort of on the way home, anyhow.)) My husband and I went in, hackles up. The little girl at the door asked how many, and I said, "I don't know if you can help us. We have five children and want to take Daddy out for lunch for Father's Day... so there's seven of us." "Come in! Come in, we can have you seated with no problem!!" she assured us, and said, "Go and get your children. We're pleased to have you!" She seated us, and asked how our day was going. I explained about the last place, and how it was so awful. "You won't have that here!" she declared. "Let me get chips and salsa for you... here are menus. You're fine, here." WHAT. A. DIFFERENCE!! All of the tension fell off our shoulders. They gave us so much food, it was a lot less expensive than the last time we'd driven out to San Marcos, and the man who waited on us was friendly and kind. ((Another group came in after ours - they had EIGHT people!)) We left full and relieved and happy and amazed at the difference. Left an enormous tip for their goodness to us. There are still pockets of patriots, out there. So our Father's Day was redeemed! But no thanks to San Marcos. Avoid this place, go to Real Arriero in Caledonia. read more

This was our first time here. Our first mistake was coming on Mothers Day. It took 45-50 minutes to get our food. Our second mistake was allowing them to seat us near the door. Every time someone came cold air would rush in an my wife would complain she was freezing. Once the food came it was pretty good. I had the Texas fajitas and they were good. My wife had chimichangas and a tamale. The chimichangas were lacking on sauce and the tamale left a lot to be desired. read more

They should be embarrassed calling their mucho Grande burrito just that. Its smaller than most places regular sized burritos. We were hungry enough after our meals to ask for more chips and salsa. We started going here years ago, when they first opened this restaurant and I swear it just keeps getting better and better. Their Double Texas fajitas are perfect for sharing, but you better have a big appetite because its always heaping with steak, chicken, shrimp, onions, peppers and tomatoes, perfectly seasoned and cooked. My husband always has to get an extra order of shells though, because between the meat and the rice and beans, and toppings that are served, there's just not enough room in the shells. Add a pitcher of margaritas, or their Lemonade Sangria, and a basket of warm tortilla chips, and...heaven. So good. Every. Single. Time! The salsa is always fresh and varies a bit on the spice level though, so have a big glass of water handy, just in case. Carmen might be the best server in the state, but thats just because she always greets her guests with warmth and sincerity. How she remembers our order, when we don't go there nearly as often as we'd like, I don't know. She really is amazing, always smiling and genuine. And her service is top notch. Thats not to say that the rest of the staff isn't amazing, but Carmen is just really special. We have never, and I mean never, had a single bad experience at this establishment over the years. The atmosphere is casual, but clean and ambient. The food is phenomenal. The prices are very good for the amount of delish food they serve. We always find an excuse to take family and friends there whenever they visit, because everyone always leaves feeling full and happy.
