Hot and sour soup and tofu with veggies. The soup was nice and spicy!

I luckily just happened to find this veg restaurant while walking around Mitte in Berlin, and boy was I happy! It can be a little difficult to find "safe" restaurants where you don't have to ask "does this contain beef broth?" I checked out the place online at Happy Cow and saw the positive reviews, so we headed there that evening. Not sure about the previous Yelper, but we found the owner and cook very friendly and helpful, along with speaking English to a point. We are in a foreign country, so of course not everyone speaks English! Anyway, they offered an English menu along with photos of all of the items (quite extensive menu.) We loved the food and ate there twice during our stay. Foreign restaurants are not known for spicy food (can be bland for those of us who like a little kick in our food) so we were happy to have some hot chili to add to our order. The hot and sour soup was delicious, which was a nice surprise since I usually don't like fruit in my entree (it contained pineapple.) This needed no addition of spice and opened up my sinuses! Veg head or not, I recommend this little restaurant!

I enjoyed it. 80% of the menu items contain tofu, so be ready for that. My friend found hair in her rice bowl, and the service was pretty slow. My fried wan tans were yummy and FYI, the "medium spicy" pad thai was not spicy.

I really enjoyed my quick stop here even though the ratings were not that strong. Definitely vegetarian but it was nice to have something warm and spicy on a cold day. I enjoyed the yellow curry dish, and reasonably priced glass of rose for lunch.

Being vegan, I always get excited to try new veg friendly cafés around Berlin. I stopped here for lunch the other afternoon and had one of their noodle dishes with tofu and veggies. The portion was nice and big, and the sauce was delicious. It was a tad on the expensive side, but that's to be expected in Mitte. Overall, it was a yummy lunch!

What a pleasant surprise to find healthy Vietnamese food with friendly service. Everything is made to order in the kitchen, so you may need to wait a few minutes. No microwaved or reheated frozen food here. I had a rice noodle dish with delicious tofu, wrapped in some sort of leaf and very well seasoned. Served with a light vinaigrette, fresh Thai basil, lettuce and topped with crushed peanuts, awesome freshness for 6.90 EUR. Paired with hot ginger tea (they brew it with actual chunks of fresh ginger), the perfect lunch on a cold Berlin day.

Is this authentic pho? No. But, it's the closest we've found so far, and for that we were pleasantly surprised. Having sriracha, fish sauce and hot chili peppers as condiments was a good sign that this pho would be alright. It didn't have Thai basil or bean sprouts, the noodles were wrong, and they added lemon grass, all of which take something away from the authenticity. However, the taste of star anise was there, which we found missing at a restaurant previously. Overall, for a fast food version, this was pretty decent and could satisfy your pho craving.

So when I landed in the heart of Berlin (in Mitte), my first stop in Western Europe, I made a B-line without hesitation. The highlight here for me was the raw egg served in a separate bowl with broth. The egg poaches itself in the hot broth. And it's so good!! I haven't had this since I was in Hanoi all the time, and where it's commonplace. The pho bowls (triple beef combo & chicken pho) were just okay. Broth came out piping hot, but also heavy on the MSG. I swear I was drinking water non-stop all night. Also, they really skimp on the noodles. I mean, dry rice noodles are very inexpensive (fresh noodles aren't available here), and most places load up on the noodles. The deep fried breadsticks came out cold and somewhat hardened. We were there for dinner and I'm guessing they were fried much earlier in the day. Disappointing that they weren't even barely warm. Service was friendly, and apparently a popular spot in Mitte. I'm not well versed on pho in Berlin, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to come here. There are actually quite a lot of pho spots in Berlin, which I subsequently tried and enjoyed more.

Broth nice clean and clear of grease. Generous amount of noodles. I had the pho tai but I think my meat was a bit too thick and cooked. It didn't taste like the usual thin rare slices. It came with bean sprouts (we had to ask for more; they give little compared to the US), basil, sliced chili peppers, and limes. Perfect. I enjoyed it so much that I didn't even add sriracha. That's when I know it's good. If you can ignore that lit up communist flag, pop in for a very good bowl of pho.

I read that it is a long wait to get in but I was able to walk right in and sit at the bar. My server was so happy and laughing she made things so comfortable. She laughed so hard when I ordered tiger beer and I'm still wondering why. Possibly because Germany is famous for good beer but I ordered the popular Asian brew. The Hanoi pho came out in seconds not minutes and the broth was amazing. I detected some lemongrass in it. There was not a pile of leaves to add to it as everything it needed to taste good was already there. The interior decoration was very nice and classy. I hope to return.
