I've been a patient for a couple of years. I think Dr. Marcus is a great doctor. In my opinion, he is very knowledgeable and tries to pass the knowledge on to his patients. I'm not too happy with his staff in regards to getting my prescriptions refilled. The office doesn't seem to understand the urgency when patients run out of refills and need the doctor to sign off on new fills. It's happened to me twice already where the pharmacy contacted their office for new refills, and the pharmacy cancelled my order because his office didn't respond quickly enough. I've had to call them each time, and I shouldn't have to. I also shouldn't have to wait over 2 weeks for the office to respond to the pharmacy. I'm not sure if the staff or if Dr. Marcus will read this review, so I'll send them a message as well. It's very frustrating to say the least. read more

Any patient who got referral to visit Dr.Marcus' office, please read this before your visit. 1. Siu-Ping Wong is shown as 'doctor' in the reservation system, but she is not a doctor. She is a nurse. She takes the reservation with false title to sell an expensive inspection spending 30min of time. If the reservation didn't say the fake title, I wouldn't even visit this office. 2. Staffs spread out your insurance information and personal information, and arrange expensive inspections suddenly without any consultation with you. The costly inspection is even random thing that has never been discussed with the patient. If this happens to you, make sure you report it to your insurance company immediately. 3. All the consultation was useless. The nurse (pretended as a doctor) never understood how to mitigate the issue. The nurse even doesn't provide medication and remedy. The staffs make use of a desperate patient's situation being completely money-oriented wasting time. I am asking this office to be ETHICAL and MORAL like other hospitals. read more

I think Dr Marcus is a very good "operator." Yet he's very hands off when it comes to leading up to any procedure you may need. You're going to see several physician assistants- see them one or two appointments before actually seeing Dr Marcus. And, when you do, he'll say you're not taking care of yourself & we need to do a colonoscopy immediately and that's exactly what will happen. He's a little bit badgering regarding lifestyle and that's not just me that's my wife and several friends who are also his patients. Not a nurturer. When you finally get to meet him, he and and his staff can be very abrasive; brusk. I think that, as I said before, he's good technically with scans & labs, but if I passed him on the street I don't think he would even recognize me, even though I've been seeing him for almost 13 years. Dr. Marcus was referred to me by another doctor in my town. I made a phone call and had a zoom appointment all in the same day. They are located in a new building in back of El Camino Hospital, it has a nice cafe on the ground floor which is so convenient as you will be starving after your 24 hour fast!!! I've been a patient of Dr. Marcus for many years. I'm glad I was referred to him because I feel very secure knowing that he is one of the best medical specialists I have ever encountered. He is expert in his field of medicine, and his diagnoses are both efficiently and accurately made. I leave confident that he has given me his full attention and expertise. The colonoscopy procedure and process is very efficiently run, with all supporting staff (intake nurse, anesthesiologist, RN) knowing their jobs and performing them well. Other reviewers here concentrate on the administrative concerns of billing and phone management and I am fortunate to say that I have not had these issues. I'm sure that managing a very busy medical office can be challenging but I know that Dr. Marcus and his PA wife, Joanne, are very committed to making a patient's experience a smooth one. I'm super disappointed because i made a appointment with Dr. Marcus (i have two kids) and i had to reschedule everything on my work and with the kids to go there. When i went there, the secretary just told me he was not there, and someone else (his nurse), will see me. She just asked couple questions and told me, "it's better you come again another day to talk to Dr. Marcus". I didn't return anymore. Does not make any sense to go to a Doctor and the staff doesn't even care to call you to say that the Doctor will not be there. After that they called me every week to pay the copay. I came here on a friend's recommendation after my general practitioner was of very little help in diagnosing my problem. Joanne and Dr.Marcus took my concerns seriously, ordered proper tests, and showed much compassion (especially Joanne). They got more done in 2 weeks than my doctor had in 2 months, and were great at explaining all the details to me, even with personal phone calls in the evening. Their nurses and receptionists are just as competent and kind. They remember names and care about their patients' comfort. I have interacted with their office staff on three or four occasions leading up to my colonoscopy later this week, and had to comment just now before I got off the phone with one of the office staff about how professional, courteous, and organized they are. If office staff is doing a good job, you generally don't notice and sort of expect that level of service. When office staff does an excellent job, they stand out and you notice. In my experience this is rare. Dr. Marcus' staff stands out. Update: colonoscopy complete, follow-up visit complete, everything handled very professionally and to my complete satisfaction. I was a patient of dr Marcus for over a decade. I overlooked the inefficiency of his staff until this past year when I couldn't even get them to fulfill an IBS prescription for months and left the practice. he is a wonderful and thorough clinician but turnover is extremely high for the admin staff and nurses except for his wife who's a nurse. post COVID, one admin told me they lost their entire staff and she was the only new person who had ever worked in a medical setting before and therefore understood how insurance worked with special prescriptions that require a prior authorization.dr Marcus had prescribed such a med for me. when I ran out of refills, I called the office request refill, I called every few days their office, my pharmacy and my insurance and they all kept not giving me a straight answer. when I finally ran out of the medication, his office offered me to drive 30 mins ea way to his office and pick up samples. they generously gave me free samples but when those ran out I was back to square one calling the office for a refill which is part of the doctors job! after tw/o wks of calling every few days and trying to get at the root of the problem, one new staff person told me Dr Marcus didn't want to deal anymore with prescriptions that required prior authorization bc it was too time consuming for his staff. where did that leave me I asked?! he was the original prescriber of this med and other alternatives had not worked for me and he wasn't suggesting an alternative so I raised my voice in frustration and utter disbelief and asked to speak to a manager. I simply asked her when can I expect to get my prescription refilled?. she said she didn't know and I was welcome to drive an hour and pick up more samples. I asked to speak to dr Marcus at that point and he got on the phone and I was visibly frustrated and he said that he simply could not work with me as a patient any longer, claiming his staff said I had been " abusive". he didn't want to hear my side. he didn't offer an explanation for why I couldn't get the med that he prescribed refilled. Follow-up to my Yelp review of 27 June 2012: Both Mtn View Endoscopy Center and Dr. Samuel Marcus called me this week, apologizing for the billing experience I went thru. I must say that I am THRILLED with Mtn View Endoscopy Center's response to my complaint, and I am very satisfied with how they resolved this matter. I also got to chat with Dr. Marcus (a GREAT guy, by the way) about not only my colonoscopy billing issue and its favorable resolution, but also what it's been like to practice medicine in both the UK and the USA. Dr. Marcus and I are hopeful that the US will make important changes to standards for malpractice lawsuits (which significantly increase medical costs for Americans) and the prescription drug "subsidies" that Americans pay, relative to non-Americans (specifically Canadians and Europeans). They lie, cheat, cancel reimbursement checks (after you catch them double billing for the same procedure), and never return your phone calls! If I could leave ZERO stars, I would. Decent at diagnosis, treatment not so much. Dr Marcus and his PA were able to diagnose my gastric issues through a series of appropriate tests. Unfortunately the treatments they tried did not work out, and after 6 months they gave up on me. I've since found out that there was a related diagnosis that they overlooked and getting medication for that by another doctor helped. Last time I was there follow-up appointments were booked 8 months in advance. If you're considering Dr. Marcus, you might want to ask about the current wait before committing. read more

I just had my 2nd routine colonoscopy. Everything about the process was done in a very caring and professional manner. Even the prep process is better than 9 years ago. The reception, pre-op consultation, nurses, anesthesiologist and of course Dr. Marcus did a great job. Dr Marcus and his wife are just money hungry. The over charged us and a friend of mine has the same problem. The will take your money and never return you calls. The procedure was ok, but some minor ones they did was just horrible. My husband almost fainted. Unethical. Ask around and you will know. There are much better doctors in the same area. read more

PATIENTS' BEWARE I was required by the receptionist to make an appointment to see Dr. Marcus for the first time prior to colonoscopy. When I arrived at the office, I had a consultation with his staff instead (without prior knowledge), and was charged as if I had seen the physician. Medical Board of California states that it is within the standard of care for staff to perform a consultation. However, it is unethical to not notify the patients ahead of time. In my personal opinion, the consultation is unnecessary and a waste of money. I then had the colonoscopy done by a renowned gastroenterologist without requiring a consultation prior to the procedure. read more

I came in after being in the emergency room for 2 days without any luck of figuring out what ws going on. Dr.Marcus and Joanne were extremely helpful, compassionate and were able to answer every question I had in a language that I could understand- not "doctor speak". They ordered the tests that I needed and were able to get me back up in running in days. It wasn't just Dr. Marcus and Joanne that made the experience a positive one though. The whole staff made me feel welcome and comfortable even in what was a semi-awkward situation. I know that if I ever have any similiar problems again, I will be going back. read more

If I could give zero stars I would! This practice is absolutely a joke. First off, you rarely actually see Dr. Marcus which in my opinion is a major problem. How can you get top medical care if your medical history is given to him by a second party?? I would actually specifically ask to see him directly on numerous occasions and would be given an appt with one of his NPs, which by the way knew less than I did! They couldn't figure out what was wrong with me, and diagnosed one of my issues as my main problem when it is actually a secondary issue. Which was made by a NP and not the doctor! He simply went with the diagnosis. They had me take an expensive medication that never helped the issue, and in fact caused other medical issues! Plus, his front staff is rude, not understanding, and they give patients medical advice when they are not doctors!! They only care about turning patients around to make a buck. If all you need is a colonoscopy, then you shouldn't have a issue, but if you have a serious or unordinary condition do not go here. Take my word for it! read more

I'm not good at speaking English, but Dr. Marcus eagerly listened to me every time. (It may be one factor dragging out his examination. But that's a sign of his zeal, and I'm grateful.) Then, he made various valuable suggestions regarding my illness care. I did sigmoidoscopy twice without anesthesia because of my request, but I did not feel great pain due to his technique. She has been working directly with my insurance company to reduce my out of pocket costs for my colonoscopy and has opened all lines of communication- call, text, email. My primary doctor referred me to Dr. Marcus about 6 years ago when I was having issues with my undercarriage. I was slightly skeptical given some of the Yelp reviews I read, but I trusted my doctor and made an appointment. My experience there couldn't have been better! After my consultation, we set an appointment for a colonoscopy, where Dr. Marcus diagnosed my condition and treated me with medicines, and I am all better now. A few years later, I developed gastroesophageal reflux. Dr. Marcus did an upper endoscopy, diagnosed my condition, treated me with medicines, and I am all better now. Again, an excellent experience. Dr. Marcus really listens to your history, asks good questions, and has a great sense of humor. What I really like about him is that he doesn't just evaluate you for your specific complaint but explores other areas of your health to make sure you don't have any other problems brewing. His office staff are pleasant and efficient and his endoscopy center is smoothly run and very conveniently located at the back end of his practice. I have no hesitation in strongly recommending Dr. Marcus for any of your GI issues. read more

Both he and his wife, his assistant, were very proffesional and attentive, and they made me feel very comfortable because I was nervous. When my insurence didn't cover my medicine, the practice put me aside some samples and Dr. Marcus's assistant called me a few times to try and figure it out, even at 9 pm! I guess I really should thank my general practitioner first ... he recommended I see Dr. Marcus. But that compliment belongs in another review. This summer (of 2009) I re-visited Dr. Marcus' office, having last had the pleasure five years back (all very routine). This time, he did discover some disconcerting matters. Some directly related to his field of expertise. Needless to say, he is avidly addressing of all them. However, he also unearthed other facts about my health which needed attention. He recommended yet another superb specialist to follow up on them. Additionally, as a result of his observations of my oxygen levels under sedation, he suggested a sleep behavior test. Its findings were nothing short of LIFE CHANGING. I wasn't complaining about my health at the onset of all these machinations, but, until you put yourself under the care of a doctor like Marcus, you never really know how much healthier you COULD be. He continuously collects data from all these other experts, weaves them into one holistic diagnosis, suggests additional medicines, tests, and lifestyle changes. In taking this approach, he is doing for you things that you would usually expect from your primary care physician. And he's the kind of "health pest" every person needs. Every so often he or his wife calls -- well after normal working hours -- to follow-up on something prescribed or to pro-actively suggest some new idea that he just thought of (a sure indicator of the fact that he is thinking of his patients EVEN AFTER they've left the office). This care is on HIS time, not my dime. Net net, do you get the feeling that I entrust my life to this guy? Let me put it this way: Our government is trying to figure ways to provide all citizens with QUALITY healthcare, the best in the world (we hope). Our leadership should use Dr. Marcus as an exemplar of virtue. We'll know we've arrived when all citizens can enjoy his definition of proper healthcare. read more
