I am new to Kennett Square and asked a local where to go for a cheesesteak. Without hesitation, Sams was recommended. Finally got to visit today. I love to know who makes the bread/rolls and a beautiful young lady says "we get ours from NJ". Where? A baker called Del Buono's...are you kidding me? I knew this was going to be an excellent sandwich. I called my friend Tom Whitman to let him know I found his rolls in Chester County. This is now my GO TO spot. A family owned business which is celebrating 80 years! Clean, organized with all I need with sandwiches, chips, lunch meat, cheese and Tasykakes. Old-school family run sub shop serving hot and cold varieties. The rolls are fresh and pillow soft with the nice flaky exterior. The staff is attentive and friendly. The breakfast sandwiches are wonderful as well. The portion size is generous without being over the top leaving a nice balance. They do have fairly sizeable drink and snack selection. There are also some imported Italian specialty cookies, crackers, pasta and a few other odds and end. I would highly recommend it as a local or even if just passing thru. read more

Wow, this is our go to sub shop. The owners and staff are so friendly and really want you to enjoy your food. We have had turkey and roast beef subs. So big for around $11 we have half for lunch and half for dinner. They are open for breakfast and lunch. We need to try their breakfast sandwiches!! read more

My favorite part about their subs is how their light and fluffy rolls really let the quality of the ingredients shine. Unable to find a menu online, my wife called over to put our order in. The pleasant voice on the other end of the line let us know there's one size of sandwich and they don't have anything fried but they have lots of chips. Simple enough. We ordered two sandwiches and we're told it would be ready in 20 minutes. When I arrived less than 20 minutes later the sandwiches were already ready. We did confirm Cashonly with our order as we could detect that this place was a little old fashion (In a great way). The sandwiches did not last long when we got home you can taste that the meats are premium and cut fresh and the roll was very light, soft, and delicious. We were very happy to have tried this place out for the first time and we look forward to adding this to our shortlist of sandwich shops in town. Old School South Philly Deli without going to South Philly. I think Kennett Square can completely fulfill a Center City transplants food needs. Sam's opens at 6:30 and closes at 3. Cash only. A very good small plate Kennett Square'esque cheesesteak in an old school sandwich shop complete with a table for four right in the middle of the patron area. I learned from the two Old-Timers I sat with that Sam's daughter and her husband run the place and the HS football team is looking good this year. Sam came back from WW2 and opened Sam's sub shop in 1946. This was a very good cheese steak. The mushrooms and onion spent some quality time together on the grill. Everyone's going to give me a hard time and say I only care about size but 'come on man' look at the pictures this Cheesesteak needed more meat. Overall very good cheesesteak experience. $9.75 stung a bit. read more

Good local place for cheesesteaks. The individual components are well-cooked - steak is browned, onions are diced/thoroughly grilled - and well integrated into a complete package. Personally I like a little more cheese but this steak definitely hits the spot when you're craving. As far as other subs, the Italian didn't live up to my expectation. For me, when I think of Philly/NYC Italian subs, they I think loaded up w/ meats, roasted peppers, cheeses... you get the idea. This one felt more like a vaguely Italian ham sandwich - not a bad sandwich, but not what I imagined. read more

This was first visit and reading the reviews I was looking forward to my sub. First off, no one greeted me when I came in, nothing... no 'good afternoon', no 'we'll be with you shortly', nothing. I really felt uncomfortable just standing there, but I pushed on. Here is huge tip that no one mentions in reviews, call in your order! If you don't, you'll be waiting 30 mins for your order. After 5 mins of standing there feeling like an idiot, someone finally came to the counter and asked if I had an order, since I didn't I had to place an order. This announcement did not make the 2 people behind the counter happy. One of the women complained that they could not keep up, and made a snide comment 'they'll learn'. What is that supposed to mean? If one doesn't place an order, be prepared to wait your lunch hour? After 30 mins, I walked out with my sandwich, thinking this sandwich better be excellent. I ordered a roast beef, which I asked if they had it rare, and no, "it only comes marbled, these days" was the response. Whatever! My sandwich was no better than another sub shop's. My suggestion, go to Capriotti 's or Wawa. At the very least, Capriotti's always greets me when I enter their store, and the Wawa manager always greets me with a smile and asks how my day is going. Not for nothing, greeting someone when they enter your establishment goes a long way. Capriotti's and Wawa sandwiches are just as good, and you won't stand around for 30 minutes waiting for it to be made. read more

Good hoagies, very generous with the good quality filings, the cheese steaks are decent, but, IMO, Capriotti's does a better one. there's no excuse to go to Wawa with Sam's on the job! The steak sandwich's at Sam's are the best that I have ever had. Reminiscent of my childhood in Philly in the 1960's. When I asked the owner why I was told that it may be because it is a 45 year old very heavy steel grill and that other steak shops use a newer ceramic grill. read more

Wow. How has this not been written-up yet? This place is amazing. You can usually hear me saying that "hoagies are definitely better in the 'burbs" and Sam's is pretty much my whole argument. The meat is sliced melt-in-your-mouth thin. They use shaved sharp provolone which has more bite then the deli sliced kind. They do a lot with a little, I think. The rolls are great. And I can't vouch for it myself but my dad goes crazy for the chicken salad. read more
