Saw someone who basically left an identical review. The guy at the counter didn't know ANYTHING about the juices and expected me to be able to read them from the counter. When I finally picked one (because their selection was that bad) it was Lava something. I asked him what flavor it was and he said he didn't know. I asked if I could smell it, he said no. I've always come here for cigarettes and vape liquid, but their selection has gone from broad to paltry, in pipes and vape juice. I have been shopping there for years but they don't seem to care and they seem annoyed that I can't read a nic salt container from four feet away. I LOVE this store. This is a family business, its been here for ages and it's just a tiny shop on the Ave that happens to have the BEST prices on cigarettes in town. Right now around $7.20 when everyone else charges $9-ish. But what's really special about these guys is that this tiny little shop carries all the newest and best methods of ingesting smoke. Period. I purchased a can of American Spirit rolling tobacco today. Price was $4 more than where I normally purchase, but I was short of time. Tobacco was rancid. Sam's Smoke offered no solution. Called American Spirit, they asked I read to them numbers from bottom of can. They informed me that my can of tobacco was two years old, but shelf-life is only 6 to 12 months! Everything I have purchased at Sam's over the years proved defective. A refillable butane cigarette lighter only functioned for 10 days. I had purchased it to replace disposable Bic lighters from polluting the environment. A glass bubbler purchased at Sam's filled my mouth with bong water. A few months ago I really really wanted a chillum. I hate bongs and spoons, because I once (okay, okay, TWICE) accidentally burned my thumb while trying to light up. And one of those times I burnt off half my thumbnail (and I was completely sober at the time). I have no idea how that's possible, but now I'm EXTREMELY leary of any device that I have to light vertically. Most of the other head shops in the U District I went to didn't have a very large selection of chillums, and/or their chillums were overpriced and/or poorly designed and/or ugly. Yes, I'm a girl, and yes, the beauty of my piece matters. Sam's has the largest and prettiest selection of chillums...so if you're looking for a chillum, go here first. (I would also recommend the place on 45th by Deep Roots--they have reasonable prices and they also had a pretty good selection of chillums when I went.) If you're looking for salvia, Sam's also has the largest selection at the best prices out of the shops I visited ($20 cheaper for the same 40atomiX purple sticky salvia). read more

So clearly, you only get one if you REALLY care about freshening the air in your home with only the purest, entirely legal herbal vapor-extractions, such as I, myself, very much do. Well, good old Sam comes to the rescue again. I had enquired about the price as I could get one on ebay, new for 539 with free shipping and no sales tax. With tax it's 545 or so. I said to hell with it, I'm already here, and the ... incense I've been burning... several, several times a day for the last year... has proved a tad carcinogenic and seems to have produced a bit of chronic, uh, productive, cough with uh... well, let's just say it looks like I'm a fireman. This. Store. Is. Fantastic. I'm an avid hookah smoker, and Sam's has it all. It may not be the largest store (hell, you might even miss the entrance if you're not paying attention), but the selections are neatly organized and well stocked. While I'd love to see brands like Fantasia or Nirvana, or flavors like Jasmine, Rose, or Lime, the selection vs. price is unmatched. The staff/owner are always friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable; they even mark down "expired" shisha - other stores I've visited do not (paying market price for 2-year expired shisha is insane). I left today spending only $60 and got 5 full flavors. That's unbeatable - even by online standards (damn Washington's import laws...). Thank you, Sam's! First of all-prior to entering, all reviews saying that this place is kind of shady have been confirmed at face value. However, we went to Puffin' Glass Studios first (which looks reputable) looking for something very specific. (a dabber setup for my friend's bong). We didn't find it, and asked the guy if he knew of anywhere else that might have it in the area-he replied, "no." Kind of a jerk salesman, imo. Anyway, I come across "Sam's Smokes" on Yelp and it says that this place is THE BEST in the area, but a little shady. Whatever, how shady could it be, if this place has been open and doing business for this long? Well they had exactly what we needed! All the pieces totalled to $20 and the other place was $100 and they didn't even have everything we needed! They look like they will have everything at this place.. and I mean everything.... It's not a huge place, but it makes up for it with shelves tightly packed with pipes that are winners of any budget. And you can save a few more bucks if you pay in cash. As far as, ahem, tobacco shops go, Sam's has been, and in my humble opinion, always will be, one of the best around. It's true that people looking to spend a TON of cash (that could otherwise be saved for bulk tobacco purchases, ha) may be better suited at one of the other local establishments within a few blocks of Sam's. But for those on any sort of budget, Sam's is the place to find great glass at an astounding price. I mean, sure, none of the pieces are custom, and most likely, while indulging in a tobacco session with friends, someday, someone will prooooobably show up with something similar if not exactly the same. But that's ok! It really is incredible how Sam's (and the owner, Ray... strange, right?) manages to undercut EVERYONE. Seriously, some nice double-perked waterpipes go for like under $100. You could easily pay double at another shop in Seattle, probably 10x if you're shopping in another state with less variety and locations. I'm disappointed to see some of the things in Sam's that they sell, like "pickles", aka "oil pipes", aka "you should quit smoking crack cocaine", but hey, better safe than.... well, I guess most will still be sorry.... But I digress. Of course, digression is the natural course in a place like this. Anything tobacco related can be found at Sam's, at a discount, and sold by some friendly folks happy to take your money. I think they probably get a kick out of watching all those college kids using mom and dad's cash to by that piece they've been "saving up for". Sam's Smokes is by far the best smoke shop to go to. The staff, although busy, are always friendly and love to make deals. They have a huge selection of pieces, as well as multiple types/flavors of shisha. My friends and I are huge hookah enthusiasts, and by smoking at least 4x/day I go through a lot of shisha. Sam's definitely has the best value, and best prices (especially if you use cash) and if you're friendly to the staff and become a regular, you're treated like family. I live pretty far north but it's worth the drive for the variety, prices, and friendly faces. read more

This store didn't open on time - was supposed to open at 10:00 but I've waited for 30 minutes. I gave up and left.

Watch out for this shop's low end glass water pipes. I bought one that broke the second time it was used. Since I'd had bad experiences with other smoke shop products, I asked whether I could return this pipe if it was defective. An employee assured me I could do that. When I tried to exchange it today for a more expensive pipe, the first employee was not on duty. His sidekick called me a liar, even though he had been in the store and heard his partner give me a verbal warranty. The nasty sidekick said they never took back defective merchandise. Funny, I had the exact same experience as the reviewer who gave the bad review previously. I bought a pipe and an ash catcher from Sam. Within 10 minutes of use and a bump to the ashcatcher, the entry point for the stem cracked out. I measured the glass. It was less than 1 millimeter. The minimum for the cheapest pipes that are made should be 3.5 mm. Call it American made or whatever. But hese are cheap items. I went back to Sam's and told him what happened and said I would like to spend more money for a higher quality pipe from his store and could he give me any sort of discount given the cheap quality of the first pipe. He told me to look for another pipe and he would tell me what sort of discount he would give. My first pipe was $120. I picked up a pipe that was $240. I asked how much discount. He said $200, his usual cash price. I walked out. His vapes are cheap. Great. I bought one from him before. I won't be buying anything from him any more. And no people, sam is not "great" or "awesome".. he's a grouch. I'm a spender in this area and he won't be getting any more of my cash. I'll also be spreading the news to my friends that Sam's is to be avoided. I like a bargain like the next guy. But I think I a basic level of quality, if no frills, for $120. Not so much.
