Italian hoagie
joe m.

I've walking by this deli for years so I decided to check out the yelp reviews and menus. I went in and perused the menu. I thought the prices looked high for a sandwich, but, hey, everything is pricey now and they have to survive somehow. I ordered an Italian hoagie. It was good and there was quite a bit of meat so not a bad value. I've had better sandwiches in the area. I would have it again, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. The folks working there nice, friendly, hard working people so I didn't mind spending my money there.

Great quick deli for a solid sandwich. Ordered the Italian sub on Dutch crunch. Price was $15.99 since it's considered a specialty sandwich but they've got other simpler options for about $12.99. Considering it's in FiDi, this is a reliable option for a good sandwich. I've tried some other cafes in the area and they skimp compared to Sammy's. The exterior looks like a liquor store with all the neon signs. They do sell alcohol and other random snacks, but don't pass up the sandwiches here. Service is friendly and quick.

Sammy's (Build Your Own) wrap: roast beef, turkey, tomatoes, banana peppers, pickles, jalapeños, lettuce, and mustard.

Sammy's on 2nd has wonderful crisp sandwiches. Very accommodating employee and charming owner. Very dependable place to visit 8am-9pm. I'm definitely a regular after my first visit Aug 2025. Check out the wrap he made for me! Thank you Sammy's!!!

lettuce wrapped turkey sandwich

I ordered the lettuce wrapped turkey sandwich and i was so impressed! The lettuce was so fresh and made the sandwich so refreshing while also adding such a nice crunch to every bite. It was packed with turkey, crisp lettuce, and juicy tomatoes. All the toppings were so fresh. It's a great healthy low calorie sandwich. I will definitely be back for more!

Grilled Chicken Breast and Chipotle Cheddar Sandwich on Dutch Crunch Bread

Honestly, this place is being added to the lineup for reliable, efficient and pretty good subs. If you aren't looking for Sammy's on 2nd or you blink, there's a chance that you miss it for sure. When I went for the first time, I definitely walked by the small bodega-style store. The front of the store is a convenience store offering anything that you need, from candy and snacks (tempting with the placement too) to beverages. Closer to the back of the store, I found two employees ready to take my order. Here, you know you are getting a good nicely made sandwich. The employees were kind and friendly. They made sure to ask me if I wanted all of the fix-ins on the sandwich and didn't get annoyed as some do when I asked for clarification. I ended up purchasing the grilled chicken sandwich with chipotle cheddar cheese, no mayo and pickles, on what I think was a Dutch Crunch bread. It was great. Can't complain about the quality and the employees were quick with it. Adding to the rotation and I'll see you there soon enough!

Godfather on Sourdough Roll

Intrigued by the cult Yelp following, I finally tried this place. They're no longer serving the Mediterranean items, but still have lot of cold cuts based sandwiches. Everything I tried was decent, though only the House Special stood out as something noteworthy. House Special on Rye: A nontraditional pastrami sandwich. No sauerkraut. Not toasted or melted. But there's creamy avocado! It was my favorite of the three sandwiches I tried, even though it had the least amount of meat. All the flavors just kind of worked well together. Godfather on Sourdough Roll: With 3 cheese and 5 meats, this is a pretty massive sandwich. Though it's not like all those ingredients each come thick. It's more like a few slices of each, but together, there's still a lot between the buns. Generally speaking I liked it. But I wasn't a fan of the bologna, kinda made the whole thing taste cheaper than it really is. With mortadella and salami in the mix, why even bother with bologna? Muffuletta on Sweet Roll: Check your expectations at door and might enjoy this. Don't expect it to be anything like what you'd get in NOLA. It's more like an Italian hoagie. Fewer meats and cheeses than the Godfather, and also that strange combination of mortadella with bologna. Liked the olive spread.

Had the Italian sub and it was good. I know it's a sandwich but nothing really outstanding about it for the price.

They put more effort into groceries than most - there's a variety of brands and quality for the products they do stock(sauces, snacks, bread, kitchen staples) - and often the prices are better than the grocery across 3rd street. There's even a little bit of basic produce (onions, lemons). Household products (otc medication, toilet paper and the like) can be a little pricey. The booze is priced fairly. There's an impressive variety of liquor, wine, sake, beer (loads of IPAs), and even a few sour beers. The staff is always friendly, very chipper and energetic. In heading out, I noticed the substantial chips and snack bags (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=w8lpu14g1uB6YAIG4eSncg) on my way out and grabbed a small bag for later. Besides what I mentioned, I noticed that there was a variety of tobacco products behind the counter. The store is sandwiched between a breakfast place and a corner bar so their variety of products make sense. There are a number of businesses across the street (framing and furniture, I believe) as well as restaurants scattered around the area. Normally, this store type would rate a four for me but I was happily surprised with my interaction with the cashier who was very laid back and cordial. After wishing him a nice weekend, he surprisingly replied with enthusiasm, "You too!". When I'm able to leave a business with a smile and a warm heart, the fifth star is earned in my book.
