I stopped by for a coffee as I was drawn in by the Japanese-style decor. I didn't really expect anything out of my cup of coffee but I ended up really enjoying my cappuccino. Been here twice, don't come here if you're looking for a good cup of coffee. the barista was nice and said the owner doesn't train anyone how to properly dial/weigh the espresso, so naturally the latte tasted like sh**. Came in another day for a drip coffee hoping that it might be better, but the owner was behind the counter having a loud and inappropriate conversation with the people in the front of the line, and everyone seemed pretty uncomfortable. guy is a total weirdo. The staff was top notch and not snobby at all. In fact we took the time to chat which made my day, as someone from the South it's those little connections that make Life grand. My daughter stored her luggage while we cruised all over town. When we returned we bought a bunch of kickass snacks for the plane. This is the type of place that if it's in your neighborhood you're blessed. It's a hangout, a quick stop, and above all else functional and friendly. You can sure tell hipsters and food fashionistas have taken over this corner market because I didn't see a big lottery machine or worn-down lucite cases with stale bear claws and what were once cheese danish. What a neighborhood gem! We were very surprised by the goodies we found in this store. Not your typical corner liquor store. It's definitely an upgraded version with an Asian twist. We were in the area for a Ritual latte but the line was down the block ugh and thankfully we remembered this place had a La Colombe sign hanging outside and so thought it would be a decent plan B for caffeine. We thought right as there's a full service cafe inside. No latte is better than a Ritual latte and the one I had here wasn't great (tasted overly strong to me) but to my delight, they do serve Third Culture mochi muffins and donuts. Say what?! Big plus was that we were the only ones here initially so no line. A gentleman came in after us and seemed to be equally as surprised as us by this place and was raving about their sake selection. I didn't peruse the alcohol but saw lots of Japanese non-alcoholic drinks up for grabs ie. Pocari sweat, Royal milk tea (one of my favs), Calpico as well as Japanese ice creams (matcha taiyaki!) that you would find in Nijiya. Such a cute corner store! I live around the block and always walk by it but never in. I finally made it inside and was pleasantly surprised! I lived in Japan for a few years as a child and was so excited to see all the little snacks available here. Everything from unique kit Kat flavors to shrimp chips to Pocari Sweat! Brought back a lot of memories and I was excited to share the fun treats with my partner as we perused the aisles. We left this time with 2 mochi muffins and would definitely recommend you give them a try if you're a fan of mochi texture. The flavor is light and the characteristic mochi sponygness keeps you full without feeling like you downed too much sweetness. I was waiting past the New Year to try a different taste of matcha even though it's the same color, not hojicha. Tonight is the right time at Dolores Outpost to enjoy a cup of plain matcha straight from Miyazaki prefecture. Usually, the matcha we currently have was once grown from Uji, Kyoto. Then the other came from Kirishima. When it comes to fruity vegetal notes, not all green tea powders are created equal. Like tea leaves from China, taste depends on climate. Anyway, I'm dying to try Miyazaki's matcha. First sip, never too bitter. After few more sips and a waiting period, sweet stringent aftertaste kicks in. I want to assume that the aftertaste is different to Uji matcha, perhaps less strength. Matcha latte isn't always my cup of joe, so I choose plain matcha which is the same as the bowl form, for only $5. Same with hojicha without hot frothy milk. I admit that I haven't stir the powdered content when it gets clumpy on the bottom. Or maybe the store clerk just normally stir rather than whisking it. But matcha is matcha. If you're looking for the authenticity of matcha, head to Dolores Outpost. It'll be worth your time if you like the fruity vegetal aftertaste. *w- read more

Great experience! My phone died mid trip to SF, so we stopped at Dolores Outpost to charge and rest. The employee was extremely kind and even offered a phone charger to us. Came here to try out the Banh Mi sandwiches, and ended up getting the Almost Thai Beef Banh Mi. At about $10 a piece I was expecting something quite a bit better than what I got. The sandwiches were cold as they are refrigerated in the back, and while they offer to heat it up for you, it still ended up being pretty cold, and we waited for quite a while for it too. The banh mi itself wasn't too bad, but it wasn't that great either, partly because it was cold. The meat tasted of pretty good quality, and the flavors were good, but had they been served fresh they probably would have tasted much more enjoyable. read more

As I'm browsing my isles and she's attempting to use the bathroom the overweight man working the cash register screams at my friend "UM EXCUSE ME WHERE DO YOU THINK YOURE GOING" disrespectfully. She responds "oh sorry I thought there was a bathroom" to which he said "I don't care what you thought you don't just walk around my store like that" (what are you supposed to do at stores?) and continues "the restrooms aren't for public use" and we respond sorry we thought if we bought something we could use them (totally plausible) he then states "I don't care what you thought" we then decided to leave and not spend our money there. So disrespectful, never have I been spoken to or treated like this in an establishment I was trying to spend money. I live a couple blocks from here and I go out and get cappuccinos fairly often. But I've only been to this place once. I came in to order a cortado, pleased that it's cheaper than Ritual and Linea, etc. It took a couple minutes to get the order in because the woman behind the counter was busy talking to her friend. She barely acknowledged my order; she just pointed at the credit card reader without even saying anything. She kept chattering with her friend. Eventually she put the coffee on the counter. No "thank you" or anything. Not even a grunt. I learned all about her friend's friend's new boyfriend who she doesn't approve of. The coffee wasn't very good. My guess is that she wasn't paying attention to making it any more than she was to me ordering it. You pay less here, and you get what you pay for. I walk by here nearly every day. Considering we have three full punch cards from this place, it's high time I reviewed it! Even though we no longer live around the corner, we walk five blocks up Guerrerro to stop by every few weeks. For one, they're the only third wave coffee spot in the area, especially considering the long line at Ritual, Fayes' Video shortened hours, and the too long of a walk to Philz or Noe Cafe. In addition to their coffee drinks, we also come for the Third Culture mochi muffins, the Japanese snacks, and the rare bottle of wine when we forget to pick one up at the store. They recently started a wine club which we heard about from one of the owners who offered us wine info and sips! We love the Outpost and will continue to patronize it :) read more

An amazingly curated little corner store filled with Japanese goods, unique indie beers, and desserts too! Stopped by here on a smoggy weekend to buy some beers to enjoy at the the park nearby with my s/o. It caught my eye from the outside as I was looking for parking and after scanning the yelp page, I couldn't resist coming in. I saw that D.O. carried the delicious mochi muffins I really enjoy in DTSJ and was so stoked to buy them here. Staff member here was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. His helpfulness made things a lot easier for me. Something that is a huge plus from small businesses. He helped me grab the lilikoi kepolo beer I wanted and separated it into single units for me to buy. They're not bad at all for $3 a can~ They have a wide selection of beers, Japanese ones included. It was so nice to see them divided into both single beers for a day at the park and packs too. You won't have to worry about committing to an entire pack here if you're trying something new, which is an amazing perk! Some of the beers/alcohol were on the crazy pricey side but I think it's to be expected from imported and rare goods. Space was clean and didn't have the cramped feeling that most tiny corner stores have. Very clean, well-organized, dim-Ly lit, and had a very nice urban vibe to it. There's also a bento/sushi selection here that's average in price. Overall I loved this lil hole in the wall place. I am juiced to come by again to try new things while hanging out at the park. I stopped in because I saw a Hojicha Latte on the menu, and there aren't too many places that do a Hojicha latte. I got it hot and sweetened and it really hit the spot on a Tuesday afternoon. This store carries an interesting variety of drinks and snacks. They are mostly Japanese snacks like chips. Most if the beer here are craft so it's a little expensive but they had tall cans of Modelo too. I wish they had more dark beer like stouts and porters but they have decent about of IPAs, Pilsner, etc. They have canned wine too. There's a decent selection of canned coffee too. It's good to know that I don't have to go far to buy top shelf Japanese whiskey like Hibiki. Dolores Park is just up the block so it's very convenient to grab a beer before heading to the park. read more

Happened to be in the neighborhood and saw that this place carried third culture bakery- Mochi muffins. Something I've been after but lacked enough motivation to actually go find. This place carried three flavors. I was recommended the churro and chocolate but going against the grain tried the matcha which I think was the original. Def Heavy on the matcha but not in a bitter way. I love the consistency of Mochi so wrap that in a soft muffin exterior and my hearts content. Would def try the other flavors! I walked in because I saw "La Columbe", a brand that makes good coffee. I've never been here before so I was confused since it looked like a convenience store. There was one person behind the counter watching something on his phone. I asked him if they make coffee and where the menu was. He was really rude. I asked him if I could get a hojicha latte. Didn't know what that was and he explained it to me very rudely. I don't know how to describe it other than that it made me feel really, really bad. I'm not sure what I did to make him behave so horribly to me. I asked him if there was a problem and he said no. I was gonna leave and not get anything but he'd already started making it? He wasn't rude to my friend that got something after me. I attached a picture of our lattes here. Mine was a Hojicha Latte and as you can see it doesn't look like a latte; it looks like milk and water (flat). My friend got a regular latte and it's foamy and looks good. These pictures were taken about 15-20 minutes after we got the coffee. Neither of us drank any because we both felt bad. It was 5$ and I regret coming here. We came here on Sunday around 5:15. These guys did a huge upgrade from the previous corner store here! First, the interior with the plants and overall setup is pleasant and welcoming. This is the spot you want to come to if Bi-Rite is too crazy. They also have a great selection of snacks, drinks, and food. I stop by to get the sushi a few times a week. The sushi is fresh and there's a good variety. Most importantly, it's a really good value. Not sure what his name was, but one of the guys working there was incredibly rude to no reason. My friend bought a $6 matcha latte and asked for a cup of water. The cashier said "oh we have bottles of water for $1". I said "he can't just get a cup of water?" and the cashier responded "well we have bottles for a reason" with a very rude attitude. This place is a great addition to this area close to Dolores Park. A great option to pop in for some local/specialty treats, beverages, baked goods, etc. - particularly on sunny/nice days when Bi-Rite is crazy busy with folks stocking up for a boozy picnic in Dolores Park. My husband and I stopped in on their opening day - we checked out the offerings, made "mental notes" of things to pick up another time when we were looking for some fuel (sushi options looked great), and ended up purchasing some beverages for the road (a local beer for my husband, a nitro-brew coffee for me). The nitro brew I had tasted a bit "tin-y" - could just be because it was a brand new canister (husband thought it tasted similar to a Guinness that he's had in the past that was off and had the same tin-like characteristics). It was their opening day, so I didn't and won't hold it against them. Will ask to sample the Nitro brew before purchasing in the future, however. read more
