    Sweet corn ice cream!
    Caitlin W.

I've come here before for produce when I was in the area -- don't miss the in-season peaches and tomatoes! -- but this time I was on a quest: I wanted the sweet corn ice cream. I used to love corn ice cream when I lived in China (you can get these tasty corncob shaped ice cream novelties at convenience stores there) and I wanted to try the real-deal fresh-produce version. If you're in the Albany area, do yourself a favor and make the trip. The subtle, summery sweet corn ice was delicious, but the goat cheese and raspberry was also excellent, and the friendly young staff was handling the crowd with aplomb. Pick up some plants or produce while you're there, or just hang out at a picnic table and enjoy the summer weather while it lasts.

Amazingly delicious sundae with fresh peaches and raspberries.

Wow, I love this place! I wish I lived closer but my wallet is glad that I don't! Farm fresh produce, bread, cheese, local good of all sorts. An assortment of plants, gardening supplies and bric-a-brac too. They serve lunch with all kinds of interesting sandwiches and soup. Ice cream, have I mentioned the ice cream!? They have the most amazing flavor selection using their own fruits and vegetables, sweet corn ice cream anyone? I would love to be able to try every flavor. What I have tried I have liked including black raspberry and peach. They have all kinds of chocolate and vanilla flavors for those who are more inclined to enjoy that. I've heard they are open through the Christmas season so maybe I can make another trip out. I hope so.

Great place to go for healthy plants at superb prices. And everybody gets to enjoy an ice cream as well. We come here a few times a year when visiting relatives in the area. It's amazing how much bigger their plants grow compared to those we buy from our local Home Depot. We've bought tomato plants from both places at the same time, with plants of roughy the same size. We planted them right next to each other. The Sam plants were ALL twice as big within 2 weeks! So it wasn't just one or two plants. It was ALL of them. Same thing happened with various other plants. By the time they're bearing veggies, the Sam plants are many times the size of HD plants. And half the HD plants are dead. We always buy mums for the flower bed. These are the 16" mums that cost the same as the 10-12" from HD. And just as with the veggies, the size difference in a few weeks is just not comparable. The sams are full and beautiful, while the HD ones have barely grown or are near dead. Too bad it's a 150 mile drive for us. My wife would have us visiting it every weekend if she could.

Lived in Kinderhook for a month this June, and it was pure bliss. Samascott's nightly sundaes were definitely a part of that! I'd move to this town. Walk the path that cuts behind town and head to this shop for their incredible seasonal sundaes (the strawberry shortcake using their farm's strawberries was heavenly), get their vanilla soft serve with rainbow sprinkles, and their doughnuts fresh in the early morning. I also adore their local pastas, blueberries, strawberries, cherries, and snap peas. Everyone and everything about this place is the stuff of summer dreams - welcoming, warm, fresh, and outrageously delicious. 5 stars!!!!!

I came for the strawberries, but I'll come back for the ice cream. Hopefully on my next trip, I'll remember to arrive hungry so I can try the tamales. That's right. They sell tamales. But only on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. For $2.50 you can have your pick of one filled with a spicy pork mole rojo, or a cheesy rajas. Naturally, I'm looking forward to eating one of each. Although I may only be able to get one, because the priority of my next visit will be enjoying more of this fantastic ice cream. The fruit flavors are made with the farm's own fruit. On my last visit they had blueberry, and it was magnificent. I ordered one scoop, which would typically be $3, but on Father's Day I got it for free. That was an unexpected treat. What probably shouldn't have been unexpected was just how big that single scoop turned out to be. I shared it with both of my kids and it was more than enough for the three of us. No joke. Of course, we were just coming from a farm up the road where we enjoyed a cider donut. The key to eating your way through the day is to make lots of little stops for small treats. With luck, once the strawberry season is over, Samascott will take their remaining fruit and make it into a fresh batch of ice cream. Because the quart of strawberries I picked up were delicious, deeply red, and fully flavored. The only drawback is that the berries were more than a little bit firm. However, I could see these being simply perfect for ice cream.

After picking strawberries and tomatoes at the orchard, we stopped over at the garden market for some ice cream. Although the orchard did have some limited ice cream available, I was glad we waited for the excellent selection at the garden market. Soft ice cream started at $1.75 for a kiddie and went up to a very reasonable $3.25 for a large (sundaes from $3.25-4.75) and hard ice cream starting at $3 for one scoop and going up to $5 for 3 ($4.25-6.25 for sundaes). Soft ice cream covers the basics plus Dole Whip, but where the garden market really shines is with their hard ice cream. That's what you want. Flavors the day we stopped included some standards (vanilla, chocolate, coffee), but quickly got more interesting. Blueberry, raspberry, and strawberry flavors were made with the farm's own berries. Two vegan flavors were available. We split three scoops - blueberry, lavender, and cantaloupe. The cantaloupe was fine, but I was expecting more of a cantaloupe flavor (but still, cantaloupe ice cream!). The lavender and blueberry, however, were perfection. The blueberries were so very clearly from the farm and it was one of the best blueberry ice creams I've ever had. The lavender? Wow. I love lavender and it's really 50/50 as to how much I'll actually like a lavender product while out and about. This tasted like actual lavender and was 100% what I was hoping it would be. It went very well with the blueberry ice cream. I wish we lived closer so we could try all of their flavors! If I haven't been able to sell you on the deliciousness and variety of their hard ice cream, they also make "freak shakes" Friday-Sunday. I haven't been able to wrap my head around how one would actually consume one of these, but they are over the top instagrammable creations. One of the ones they had on offer during our visit had a s'mores milkshake topped with an actual s'more, ice cream, whipped cream, a chocolate dipped graham cracker, and chocolate chips. There's a nice farm market inside, so be sure to stroll through after enjoying some delicious ice cream.

Decided to take a detour on the way back to NYC. Ordered the lemon ginger ice cream, and pistachio ice cream. Both were delicious, especially since it was so hot out! The lemon ginger had a balance of both flavor - not one flavor overpowered the other. The pistachio was very creamy and full of nuts. The free range chicken coop was some distance from the farmhouse market. So many chickens in one place! And they all look lean and clean. (I'm from nyc so any type of farm animal amazes me.) The greenhouse housed much plants. The flower greenhouse smelled amazing! Everyone working there was very nice.

Their ice cream is so fun! It's delicious too and affordable! Will definitely go back. If you are traveling though the capital region look this place up! It's a nice drive but worth it!!

Nutella swirl is actually swirled with raspberry, which is an unexpected combo. I didn't care for it. $3 for one scoop, no extras.

My mom is my source of all things gardening, and she told me to go to Story's. I looked up the website (which is great) to see what they had in stock. Under "fruiting plants" in nursery stock, I found what was basically a comprehensive list of all the fruit I could think of...so we just decided to head over and take our chances. When we arrived and walked around a bit, I realized that they actually HAVE pretty much everything on that comprehensive list, because this place is massive and awesome. I don't think I can possibly list all the things they've got, but I feel pretty confident saying that their selection is better than anything you might find in the surrounding area: Trees, shrubs, evergreens, bushes, perennials, herbs, succulents, conifers, flowers, vegetables, vines...you want plants, they've got the plants. They've also got all the garden supplies you need...plant food, fertilizer, seeds, pesticides, tools, a gorgeous selection of pots, and hooks, and garden gnomes, and more. I didn't know I needed netting to keep the birds from eating my blueberries, but they did, and they've got the netting you need. I should note that my mom frowns on netting your berries, as she believes we need to share with the birds...but she's just a much better person than I am.
