What I have found, like many others, is that when you ask for a quote, they're all over you like flies, but AFTER the job is done, you're met by silence. We had two issues - some bulging siding and a torn window screen. No matter what number we call, we get routed to an answering machine. Does it even record? Who knows? At any rate, no one ever calls back or stops by. We'll probably, also like others, end up having to take care of it ourselves.

We never got a response, then I happened to run into the salesman from Garrety that sold us the sunroom and I expressed our disappointment. He was helpful and the next day we received a call from Garrety to schedule a time to come out and repair the leak. The repair man came out twice as it continued to leak after his first visit. Well, it's still leaking and we are concerned about the structural integrity of the roof and ceiling if the room continues to leak. For a project that cost almost $100,000, we really believe Garrety should do a better job standing behind their work.

I called several different glass companies to get estimates and lead times. Only two answered, one quoting a price of $60. Howell's gave me a price of $35, while all the others never returned my messages. It was a no brainer to place my order with Howells, although I did have some pick up concerns. I was told it would take a week. I placed the order on a Thursday around lunchtime. Howells shares space and/or has some sort of affiliation with a True Value in the city. In a less than desirable part of the city. I was concerned about parking, as that area is street, and some metered and very hard to secure parking. The weight of the glass according to my goggle research would be about 27 lbs. I was concerned about the possibility of walking some distance in a bad neighborhood with a large piece of glass. I spoke to them about this and was told of their parking lot in the back off of the Beaver Street alley and to call when I got there and someone would bring it out. To my surprise my order was ready for pick up a few hours later and was a few dollars less than they quoted me. I went to pick up after I got off work, still dressed in my work attire. The alleyway is wedged between a church and warehouses. There was a lot back there, wasn't sure it was theirs but parked and called. They said I was in the correct spot and to walk up the ramp, thru the glass shop, into the True Value to pick up. I asked why they can't bring it to my car and was told that "there was paperwork I needed to complete". It was prepaid. I assumed someone would carry the glass out. It's late in the day and about to get dark. I'm in heels. I walk up the ramp and thru a workshop where they are actively cutting glass with protective gear on. I'm not in protective gear and it's a maze to get to the store. In the store a lady hands me the glass and the receipt - which apparently was the "paperwork aspect" and I'm left to fend for myself, carrying this huge piece of glass the same way I came in. An employee did offer to open the door for me but at no time was it offered that they carry it to my car. I made it ok but wasn't thrilled about the experience especially after being told pickup would be handled differently. Note to store, they need to make this process easier for customers, especially females and at no time should any customer walk thru a working "shop". That alone is a huge liability. Also labeling of the lot and lighting would be most appreciated for safety reasons especially in such a bad neighborhood. Otherwise I was thrilled they got my order done earlier and for less.

However, their warranty service is extremely disappointing. After just one month, the screen on our sliding door developed a hole at the bottom. I called multiple times, but no one ever came to fix it. Later, when I reached out for a quote on a new siding project, the salesperson was eager to give me an offer. I made it clear that I would only proceed if they first fixed the screen under warranty. Since then, I haven't heard from him or anyone else. It's frustrating that they are quick to take on new projects but completely ignore existing customers with warranty claims. If you're looking for good installation work, they are fine--but don't expect any follow-through on repairs or warranty service.

In the last few weeks of my father's life, I was tasked with caring for his home, which was in need…read moreof various repairs and did not have spouting. The house is large and historic, so this was a bigger project than what I was used to. With my father in a nursing home, I met with the various spouting contractors and presented my father the proposals to review and ultimately decide who he wanted to go with. Zephyr Thomas was one of three spouting contractors. One of the others was a contractor I had used personally at my home with a good results. That gentleman was very personable and friendly and very open to all my questions, as well as easy to reach. I did not feel like I was a bother or made to feel stupid for asking questions. Personally, that would have been the contractor I would have chosen, but my father chose Zephyr Thomas. They were the highest in price. I thought the proposal process was very impersonal. I didn't meet with anyone initially and the price was based loosely off a google earth image of the house. It wasn't until I insisted that a picture is not going to capture the problems that Brad (one of the owners) went out. I had questions that I felt were best to be answered in person and that was the first time I actually met anyone there. Brad spoke to my dad once on the phone during that meeting and went to the house again to confirm something - making sure to mention he'd been there "multiple times now", which I felt was almost a jab. Otherwise, Brad was polite and satisfied my dad's questions. They had the design dad liked the best so that's who we hired. I will add that their showroom is gorgeous and quite impressive and would recommend anyone considering them to see the materials in person. When it came down to signing the actual work contract and dropping off the check dad's health had declined. He was in the hospital the day I was to drop it off and hospice was recommended. I had a million things on my mind and didn't feel that a day or two would make that much of a difference since it was early Feb and the work wasn't scheduled till late April. However, Brad insisted and came to my house to pick up the check saying that he wanted to be sure I was "locked in" before material costs went up. He was kind and polite when he picked up the check, but I did feel he had poor timing given the situation. Sadly, dad passed two days later, which the company was aware of but no one reached out. I felt like I was the one making more of an effort after the contract was signed to find out what was expected from me, the timeline, and scheduling. They could have been a little more hands on, like they were when they came to pick up the check. I checked on the crew twice during installation and they were friendly, they followed my instructions to leave anything that I could scrap and even carried it to my scrap pile. They left the premises clean. There was two crews and I did have to call to follow up as the work went longer than anticipated. A comment was made about how the old guys (the one guy was 70!) make up their own hours. The end result does look a bit strange to me with double gutters, and maybe that was the most effective design, although not aesthetically pleasing. It doesn't look as integrated as the spouting at my house. I mentioned this to the receptionist when I paid the final bill and she said she'd let Brad know. Whether or not he inspected the final project I don't know and haven't heard from them since. Not a horrible experience, but not warm and fuzzy either. People skills could be improved, especially for someone in my situation. But the job is completed, the gutters do what they're supposed to, and the workers cleaned up, so for that reason I feel a 4 star review is justified.
