I went to this restaurant wanting Korean food. Unfortunately food was mediocre at best. I should have known based on the menu offering of various Asian food. Yes, it's good to have options but often place that is offering Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Vietnam...it fails to deliver and this place was no different. I ordered Yakimandu and Yukgaejang. Dumpling fillings had no flavor and Yukgaejang came in incorrect large soup bowl, way too much broth, and had bok choy in it, which is also wrong. Soup did resemble Yukgaejang flavor but was far short of being Korean dish. I would have gave 1-2 stars if it was based on Korean food that I eat. The giant mirror on one side of the store makes it look bigger than it really is. It helps you feel a little less claustrophobic, because the space between tables is kind of small. Sam Oh Jung was able to accommodate a large group of us on a Saturday night, so I was appreciative of their service. The sushi boat is a good deal for us. It included three rolls and a couple nigiri. We also ordered a sashimi combo, and it had the white tuna that I like! The udon wasn't that good, in my opinion. It didn't have any garnish other than some flakes of seaweed. I have wanted to try this spot for awhile, and I typically will not review somewhere without actually eating the food, but I walked in to this location and was hit with an immediate horrible smell. I am not even sure what the smell was, maybe old fish or something, but it was so overbearing and unsettling that I knew I couldn't eat here. I got a sticky menu from the very nice waitress and sat down in a dark booth to a water with an off-putting taste and had to leave. This would be a two star place in Annandale, VA, but since we're in Bradenton/Sarasota, it's as good as it gets for Korean and the sushi is fresh and well-prepared! Their galbi (beef short rib) is pretty darn good. Good marinade, decent amount of charred parts and it's not swimming in oil. The kimchi jigae (pickled cabbage soup with tofu and pork) was okay. They put way too much sesame oil in it in my opinion, but to each their own. It's a shame though b/c their kimchi is so perfectly ripe, flavorful, sweet and pungent. It would make the best soup, but the sesame taste overpowers it. Don't request brown rice unless you want the hardcore brown rice. I expected the typical fluffy light brown rice served at most restaurants, but their brown rice is uber healthy and not the best accompaniment to sushi. (see pic) Ban chan (small sides) were minimal but more than I expected in a Manasota restaurant. They served standard kimchi, radish kimchi, marinaded radish/carrot and bean sprouts. The other Korean restaurant in Bradenton only serves kimchi, so they are more than generous in comparison. Restaurants in Annandale fill the table with anywhere from 5-10 ban chan plates, but you take what you can get here. Oh, how I long for the Korean restaurants in VA, but I'm so grateful for Sam Oh Jung. Best Korean in the area for sure and service is fantastic. Highly recommended! read more

I like the dark ambiance of the restaurant but it's not for everyone. I got their jamppong and it was so good, the seafood was fresh and the udon noodles were nice and tender. They give you a side of pickled radish (which were soooo good) and kimchi depending on the dish you get. The waitress was nice as well. I will say though that their Korean options are very slim and they are mostly a sushi restaurant but if you want to try some korean staples then you should definitely come here. read more

I love Korean food. And this place is so conveniently placed in the center of Bradenton. Our whole shop loves going. We order take out quite a bit. They have never messed up a single order. And they are very pleasant when you order or eat in the restaurant. Now I would love to see tabletop bbq added in the table but I'm a dreamer ;) I love some galbi! They serve pho, ramen, and sushi too. So it's a pretty wide selection of food at a very reasonable price. Only hard part is, you want to try everything!! Can't wait to go back. First of all it's not a Japanese place. It's mainly Korean, and then whatever Chinese food they could add. The menu is a hodgepodge. Each type of food is what you'd expect from a restaurant opened by someone trying to satisfy everyone while satisfying no one. I went in at noon on a Monday, one person at the sushi bar, and a couple at a table. That was it. The waitress brought a menu fairly quickly but her command of English was very limited, so it was difficult to get questions like do you have cold green tea or do you have cold tofu answered. I'd have liked to know if they served the small plates of Korean vegetables one normally gets with a Korean meal. I waited... then moved to the sushi bar thinking the service might be quicker. The waitress brought my menu back and told me to place my order through her... I still assumed the sushi chef, who was staring down, would make it and hand it to me. He never, in the half hour I was there, looked up. Not when I said hello, not when I put my order in. About 15 minutes after I put my order in, again only two other patrons in the place, he disappeared for 10 minutes. I was just about to leave when he returned after the waitress went looking for him. He finally made my order, handed it over the counter without making any sort of eye contact or looking up. All of this might not have bothered me if the sushi were any good. It was a very simple order. Two pieces of ikura sushi and one order of salmon sashimi. One glass of club soda. Mind you, not Perrier but club soda. The ikura was someone tasteless, though edible. The wasabi was old enough that it had started to turn brown. The sashimi came on shredded daikon so old it was brown & limp. I ate a small piece of the sashimi and then left it because it was awful. Ask for the check, the waitress looked at my plate but didn't ask what was wrong, I paid $22 for this miserable experience and left. Very much do not recommend. 40 minutes I'll never get back. read more

The food and customer service here was top notch. I had the CS Roll and Carlson roll- both extremely fresh. The egg roll is one of the best I've had. And finally, we ordered the Kung Pao Chicken (mainly because I'm less familiar with the Korean style menu) and it was different than your typical Chinese KPC, but incredibly flavorful (a bit spicy which is great!) and a huge serving. I can't wait to go back and try the more Korean dishes. Very impressed. read more

This place is nestled into a shopping center next to a publix. I love Korean food and I eat it all over the country whenever I can. Me and my girlfriend wanted some Korean but didn't feel like driving to our usual spot in Tampa . We were both really surprised how great the food was. I feel kind of strange writing this review. I've been going to Sam Oh Jung since I moved to the area back in the 90's. But never wrote a review. There was a period of time where I went there about once a month and then that tailed off when I got too big for my britches. But know what? This placed saved this poor west cost boy. Asian food in this area was really bad when I moved here and Sam Oh Jung was the only place that was good. So I lived there. I let them down a few years by not going often, but I've been going there for lunch recently as it is close to work. So I figured I better wite up a note and according to my criteria of being consistently good they need 5 stars. 14 years of good means here, how can they not be 5 stars? And they are still good, still friendly, still serving some very good sushi and Korean food. I'm a big fan the Gal bi and the Dolsot BiBimBap. My DC loves the eel as well. Always fresh tasty and yummy. The choice of Korean dishes aren't huge, but what they do are very nice. As for the sushi, it is always nicely prepared and very tasty. Try the sweat shrimp with the fried head for a nice treat. Service is always excellent and friendly. Actually more friendly now than they were all those years ago when I first stumbled upon them when I was shopping at the publix next door. Go, go now, and get some gal bi and some eel. Ignore the Chinese things they have on the menu, they have those for the crazy blue hairs that don't know any better and just get sushi and tasty Korean food. read more
