Awesome! So helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. And Lamy inks and pens to test! Yay! Plenty of fountain pen friendly paper to try. I gave the Hahnhemmule Sketch and draw $2 notebook a shot and it works like a dream with ZERO bleedthrough and minor feathering and they also have the japanese line of Mnemosyne notebooks but I grabbed a Lamy instead. Sam Flax is a paper sanctuary for those like me who refuse to organize electronically. I realize all the advantages of certain technologies, however there is NOTHING like putting an ordinary pen to paper, and Sam Flax gets that. It's like art in every day ordinary. So many great gift items, books, framing supplies, and I love that Sam Flax also carries the Papaya line. Really great classes offered here as well--I have seen calligraphy classes offered, and have taken a Zentangle class, which was really cool. read more

Fun!! This place is a creative heaven. It's like Michael's or Jo-Anne's totally cool older brother or sister. The cover all the basics in here as well as go well into the experiences creative world. You can find anything that has to do with coloring, painting, scrap booking, framing, photography, etc! They have tons of how-to information as well as an extremely knowledgeable AND friendly staff. The building alone demonstrates the amount of creativity help within these four walls; the entire building is covered in beautiful graffiti! Students and teachers get a discount so make sure to take advantage of that by showing your ID. I have recently gotten into painting and this place was just amazing to finally venture into. Had everything I was looking for and more. The store is very centrally located and staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. The murals outside of the building are stunning. Sam Flax is a great place to buy presents and art supplies. I've been visiting Sam Flax in downtown Orlando probably for the last 10 years. This current store location is large and you could easily spend a few hours getting lost in there while browsing. I love that they have a wide selection of novelty items, unusual gifts, and almost any art supply you can think of. One of the things I absolutely love is all their beautifully designed big sheets of paper. I had a chance to go to Sam Flax this week to do a little shopping, and the staff is always so helpful. This was my second time at Sam Flax. The staff here was incredibly friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I had a project I was working on and needed to find a paint that would work on a textured plaster surface as well as fabric. After a quick chat I was recommended to buy the Posca paint pens (which are amazing!!!). Another thing I love is that they support local artists. They have events frequently and they even do a big mural event once a year that allows multiple artists to paint the front of their building. Pro tip: they offer student discounts here. I purchased over $200+ worth of Posca paint markets and ended up getting $60 off with my student discount!! Whatever art supply needs you have Sam Flax has you covered. read more

I went to San Flax to buy a key ring. The three sales people behind the counter said that they had no idea where they might be. There was one other customer there. They said things are moved around all the time without them knowing where. Someone suggested I look in the gift section. No one offered to help. I left without finding any key rings. read more

I love this store! I could spend all day picking out pens. And I love their collection of books on art and artists.

I've always been a believer that it was important to support local businesses. It promotes the diversity of access as it fuels the commercial energy within our local communities. Today at about 3:30 pm it was very, very hard to remember why I walked into the store, after encountering the snotty, abrasive, self absorbed young woman whom I believe was put there to assist the customer, which by the way happened to be me, at that moment. Upon approaching her, as she was engaging in an apparent casual conversation, I decided to wait. After she completed her little chit chat, she reluctantly looked my way with a very surprising remark - what's up! Not may I help you, are you finding everything you need, are you being assisted. Everything went downhill from there, well at least from my experience. The goods she directed me to had no prices, so again I was caught in the very unpleasant energy of this young woman. She abruptly left my items and walked away, leaving her colleague to finish serving me. It was very clear from her behavior and attitude, that she must have owned the store. If this was the case I could easily see the store quickly going out of business given such an attitude. Ok let me cut it short. Sam flax is not the cheapest store around. Stores in the very close vicinity has the very same products for 30 to 40 percent less in some cases. Yes they have a greater variety and greater range in quality, but such is the case on line, with added advantage the products are shipped to your house and you don't have to put up with such rude and unpleasant behavior from people who are there to assist the customer, instead of acting like they are doing the customer a favor. May I kindly recommend that Sam Flax Art store invest in staff training. People contact and products experience is mostly all this business have going over the competition. Product experience is great, personal interaction really sucks. Not sure if they are college kids, but this is a problem and it needs fixing asap. Ill be watching. read more

This is such a cool store! Whenever I need fun little gifts, for a birthday or something, I go here first. I also go here, when I feel the need to draw someone naked, like one of my french girls. (That's a joke of course...since I like boys) Back to the review... Its a really cool place, fun just to walk around. If you are an artist, this should be your number one store pick in Orlando. Great art store with plenty of supplies to keep you busy 'til after dark. The layout is very easy to navigate. Much better than the original location. The Mondrian theme is overdone though. I don't know who was in charge of the art direction, but it's kind of a train wreck. It's like someone said, "Hey! Let's exploit the sh!t out of Mondrian's artwork and re-purpose it as our own signature store brand." Prices are fairly high on most items, so shop around if you can. However, the selection is hard to beat in this one horse town. You may have to bite the bullet while pulling the trigger. The framing department is actually worth commenting on. I got 5 custom-sized mats cut today in under an hour. The process was painless, and I'd go back again tomorrow if I had more art to frame. One final advisory: The parking situation is awkward and there aren't many spots. You may have to park on a side street or get your sweetie to drop you off. read more

My first experience with Sam Flax was in 2005 when I was just starting out. The products were marked up to over %100 at the time. I looked around there to see if this had changed, now that people are more aware of the variety of art supply stores and online art shopping. Thaaat's a big NOPE! Same amount of markup. Double and quite close to double. No thanks. At least they now carry a wider variety of items. There are other art supply stores in the area for emergencies or shopping local. read more

Sam Flax has moved! About 2 or 3 blocks east at 1800 E.Colonial. They painted the outside to look like a Mondriaan, very eye catching, very hard to miss. The inside is HUGE! Everything is spread out and displayed nicely, easy to find. So much easier to browse around and more space to put more STUUUUUUUFF! If you haven't seen it yet, go by and check it out, it's really nice. read more

Awww, this Samflax is pretty spiffy. Not sure if I prefer my hometown one or this one, but they roughly carry the same items, more or less. It's a really easy to spot building colored blue, yellow, red, and white. We came here to see about their custom framing. I have never done it before, so it was a curious matter. Fine art pays a pretty penny for lovely custom frames, so be prepared, but to all the vets out there, don't mind me. I certainly wouldn't mind using some of their anti-reflection UV protected glass. For other people, who do not know, they also are able to scan/photograph canvas paintings so you can have a nice quality digital image. Or so they say.... For the crafters, it's probably not your cup of tea. Sam Flax and its sister stores all cater to the heavy art laden spheres, but there is still plenty to craft and behold. I'm unsure of the price difference to a Michaels or Hobby Lobby to Sam Flax, but I think you might end up paying a little more at Sam Flax if you happen upon the nicer paints and mats, but they always seem to be running deals too. They also include a mild selection of artist chairs or office chairs, whichever suits your skill set. The drafting tables are pretty spiffy, but anyways... you can probably spend a long while here perusing the various materials and interesting trinkets. If you're an artist or into the arts, then it's a must stop. read more

You would never know that this is the same Sam Flax that used to be a few blocks away. This new location is incredibly bigger than the old one. More importantly though, the selection is much larger. All of the types of items they've always had are still here: art supplies, crafting supplies, little gifts and trinkets, framing supplies and services, studio furniture. There's just a lot more of it. They may not have the exact tool or supply you're looking for, but they've got an option for you. The new Sam Flax is like the Toys R Us for artists. My wife described this place as "the most dangerous store in Orlando". When we go in, she has to focus on what she's in there for and keep from wandering off to look at other items which catch her eye and demand to be bought. If she doesn't control her urges, she'll end up spending her entire paycheck each visit. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, and you can usually find someone without trouble. They've also got a sort of artist bazaar set up outside on the weekends where you can meet some local artists, and more importantly - buy from them. I love the idea of this, but I'm not sure it's the best place for it. Trying to get artists who are coming here for supplies to buy art is going to be an uphill battle. read more

I forever love this place. Local art stores are the BEST hands down. It's a small store but I could literally spend hours in there. They have most of the things I need at reasonable pricing (student and military discount available), as well as new things to find. The staff is always so friendly and helpful. Parking is usually never an issue when I go, which is during the week, during the day (like before 4pm). These guys have the market cornered on variety. Its amazing that I visited Michaels prior to coming here, thinking that the prices would be more competitive based on the fact that Michaels might be a bigger chain. Not so, the oil paints were more expensive, and the canvases were also more expensive and nowhere near the variety that this smaller store has. The guys working here are VERY helpful. I went in with intentions of rekindling a painting hobby, and started grabbing handfuls of material.....and soon had more than I could carry. I turn around, and there is one of the guys with a basket. Its those little things that happen that make it a great shopping experience. You will think that a smaller specialty store like this will have less inside it, as well as higher costs. Fight that thought and go in, you'll be blown away. read more

With the new location they now offer Artist's Market's now every Sunday. They showcase local artists and their work and from time to time a great local food truck for lunch! I will still say their Scrapbook items are pricey. For example, my local scrapbook store offers a Smashbook from KCo/EK Success for $11.99 whereas, Sam Flax priced it at $15.99. This store is the mecca of all things artsy! An amazing selection of paints, canvas, brushes, basically anything you need to get creative, they've got it. In addition to that, the customer service is phenomenal! Whenever I have a question, no matter how random, they always answer it! Their staff is consistently friendly and seem like they genuinely enjoy their jobs. I've been going to Sam Flax since I was a little girl and I've always loved it because of the super cool knick knacks that they have scattered around. You always find little neat things that you've never seen before and the inventory is ever-changing. They offer custom framing and printing as well, if you ever need any of that this is the place to come to. Their prices are reasonable and their work is always done well, I've had a few pieces done here over the years and have always been pleased. I love the new location, even more room for more stuff! I've also found that if they don't have something you're searching for, they can order it for you at no cost and have it shipped to the store!
