Sam Flax is way more than an art supply store and framing shop. They have all kinds of gift items, books, premium name brand ink and fountain pens, home decorations and more. I had not been to Sam's since they moved across the street a few years ago. As a customer I went for some colored pencils and the staff was extremely helpful in finding items for a gift. I was walked by a staff member to several areas of the store and items to choose from were placed in my hands while the staff member explained the features and made recommendations. The level of customer service and help is something you don't commonly see in retail stores these days. The store has a tranquil vibe which makes it fun to browse the many gift items. Their stock is unique in that they carry a breadth of items that are high quality at a range of prices. You can spend a lot of time here finding inspiration and treasures. They offer art classes and during the Christmas season they offered free make and take craft classes. They had a small cardboard 'house or cottage' setup inside the store with tables stocked with all the supplies you needed for that weeks's free project. This was not just for kids. My friend and I had fun making gift tags the day we were visiting the store. The store is beautiful inside and out. The beautiful murals that cover the outside walls echo the beauty and fun you will find inside the store. Since they are popular the parking lot can get pretty full. read more

Paint, graphite in a variety of hardnesses, notebooks, and of course all the things needed to frame items to. Can't order anything online from this store. What kind of store doesn't provide customers with the ability to order online. Not even a product list to search online. These people are living in the dark ages. The alternatives are HobbyLobby and Micheal's who both have capabilities to order online. At least their Atlanta store has an online store but it's out of stock of simple items like a T-Square. What kind of ART store is out of stock of T-Square is simply baffling. read more

Jenna did an amazing job adding a pin to an existing frame for me. I thought I would try Sam Flax because all the framing shops I have used in the past have told I "need" to have a new frame custom made so the pins all fit. Jenna not only added my newest pin to my existing frame, she left plenty of room to add many more later on! And it looks amazing! 1st time visit for a watercolor painting class :) So glad I did! I had a different expectation on how the class would be instructed (was more "self taught" in my opinion) but nonetheless such an enjoyable experience! It was nice to spend some time by myself just zoning in and letting the art flow! I didn't have a chance to browse the store itself but it looked beautiful. I had the pleasure of visiting Sam Flax Orlando recently, and I can't speak highly enough of my experience! My daughter had shopped there for supplies for her upcoming semester. The night before she left she realized she had purchased the wrong type of paints in many colors. She had misplaced her receipt and was concerned that on a college budget, her mistake would be costly. As she had an early morning flight, I was the one who went to the store. At the store, I worked with Vanessa, the assistant manager. Vanessa went above and beyond to help us. Vanessa was so helpful. She was able to give us store credit and helped me shop for what was needed as I was not confident in my ability to find the correct items on my own. Additionally, she helped come up with a solution to get these items to my daughter out of state as shipping oil paint has restrictions and I was not knowledgeable in how to do it. It's rare to find customer service like this--Vanessa's even emailed us later in the day to provide more information on our shipment. Leaving some local love for my favorite art store. I've been coming here for a long time and nothing's changed. They're still the coolest art store in town. I love supporting a small business normally but especially during this pandemic it's so important to show your small business community love. Why go to target or Walmart (large corps) and risk not finding the supplies you need/want? You can come here and literally find everything and more. I drove here today and treated myself to a mom art supply spree for Mother's Day. I found everything I needed and more. They also have all types of art inspired Knick knacks perfect for gifts. You simply can't miss their business as there is local art adoring the walls outside. Bada** at that!!! As far as Covid 19 goes not only were all the employees wearing mask they were kind enough to have a table with mask and hand sanitizer available for people who needed it. 5 Stars for an art supply store that is able to provide more to the community than just palettes and paint. Right of the bat, you'll notice the exterior walls at SF. They have rotating artists submit plans and execute beautiful, provocative, and evocative murals all around the outside of the shop. Some of the artists are well known locally and some are new names, but regardless, SF provides this platform to have art prominently displayed and the neighborhood/community/Colonial Drive is better for it. Besides that, it's a great art store. I've gone in needing everything from watercolor markers to canvas, so special paper for printing, and always found what I needed. The back of the shop is the framing store, run by an artist who has a great sensibility and artistic eye for framing. He's given me great advice when picking matting and frame colors and widths and the jobs they've completed for me have always been impeccable. I get all my art framed here (when it doesn't fit in standard frames). I'm glad we have a local option rather than having to go to a nationwide chain for art supplies. They may not be the cheapest, but they'll help you find exactly what you need and do it with expertise and a smile! read more

Love this place. Since I was a kid, I have had a pretty major obsession with art supplies and any kind of paper/pens store. Back in the day, they were called "stationery stores", and they were awesome. Anyhow, this is one of those never-ending stores where you could easily waste a few hours if you're not careful. They have a good selection of half priced books and tons of fun writing sticks (as my dad used to call pens). I blew a few bucks and about 2 hours because why not. They also host classes, I'll have to check that out because nothing says fun to me more than a calligraphy class! read more

You'll find more unique inventory here- but maybe fewer things for scrapbooking and decorating than a Hobby Lobby. I also frequent their custom framing department. I am not an artist (far from one) but I do enjoy walking through the isles to look at their vast inventory of all the things that will allow you to create your masterpiece. Before coming to this store, I honestly had no idea just how expensive art supplies are! I have had many professional degrees, artwork and pictures framed by them due to how dependable they are (again, $$$$ but you get what you pay for!). Their work is always timely and high quality. The framing department communicates with customers well. Best art supply store ever! I'm really into lino printing, which is a pretty niche type of art. Stores like AC Moore and Jo Ann don't have the supplies I need. I will often find the rubber speedy cut blocks around, but I was so happy to find real linoleum blocks here! Also super reasonably priced. They also have a plethora of printing inks available and other supplies as well. I've ordered a lot of these items online and some of them were cheaper at Sam Flax. If you need any specialty craft supplies I'm sure this place would have it. Also took a look at the amazing framing selection and I will definitely come here for my next framing needs. They also have a cute area with little gifts. I didn't need anything so I didn't shop around, but it looked like they had some unique items. read more

Pro tip: check with a sales person, they can check if the item is suppose to be in inventory and help you hunt through the pencil racks to find it. Been there; done that (more than once). Sam Flax also carries different sizes of artist portfolios, useful for transporting your creations with minimum damage. With its large inventory of artist supplies and a huge array of novelty gifts, this store should come with an OCD warning label. Some of the artist supply aisles are narrow and stacked with free standing displays of products. The shelves are overflowing and clearly shopped (in OCD language that means in some state of disarray that will drive you nuts). Sam Flax is not a bookstore. It carries a small selection of art items and books for young kids. I found the offerings appropriate for beginners (i.e., kindergarten) or high school. I had a hard time finding drawing books appropriate for middle school, especially for realistic people. With the help of a problem-solving sales associate, I finally settled on a manga how-to and sketch book combined, forgoing realism because the how-to covered some goods basics. If you are looking for specific art books for children under high school, try a huge bookstore instead. read more

This is the craft store of all craft stores! It does not cater specifically to card making or scrapbooking. Or other kind of small crafts like candy making or fabric art. But for the serious artist this is the place. It has so many options of paints and papers and posters and stationary. It also does custom framing. There is way too much in this store for me to put in this review. I have been there several times and I've always found just what I needed that I couldn't find at other craft stores and I've always had courteous treatment from everyone who works there. Also in the section upstairs they have a clearance selection that also has amazing to choose from.
