I've lived in the neighborhood for 35 plus years and never thought I would step foot inside Salty Dog bar. Being a non frequent drinker, hole-in-the wall bars just never caught my fancy. And, only then will I entertain a night out unless I'm with the right group of people. I've been to this bar several times now and it's been nothing but good old fashion fun. You can be yourself and no one bothers you. It's not crazy crowded, at least when I've been there during the weekdays. I can actually find a seat at the bar or just lounge in the back area on a couch. There are also tables and chairs to choose from. There has been a DJ, live band, karaoke or just plain music jammin. The highlight for me: the bar tenders ! They were attentive and friendly. Shout out to Justin and I forgot young looking female bartender's name. Shout out to her too This bar may not be as lit and inviting looking from the outside, don't judge. Was not expecting this bar to be as cute as it is! The whole bar is clean and nicely done inside, the ceiling is gorgeous! Tues is Trivia night and we had a blast, they have large screens that show the questions. My absolute only complaint about this place is the music is so loud! Hard to hear yourself or others. Attended a 'sold out show'. So appreciate that it wasn't packed. Also, not overly loud. So refreshing. Comfortable. And may I say, their popcorn is as good as my husband's stove top, butter and salt homemade! Never have had popcorn anywhere as good as his!!! read more

This is a fun little bar. It's definitely divey, if you're looking for something like that. So, as you might expect, drinks are affordable, and there is no cover at the front, thankfully. The front area is mainly for live music, and most of it tends to be local rock bands with some occasional variation. There is a back area for billiards, which I haven't partook yet. It is perhaps a nice area for some other activity that would put the music in the background. The crowd is somewhat eclectic. They get their fair share of locals as well as those who are there for particular bands or types of music. The clientele is generally nice and interesting. Parking: Street, anywhere you can find it, which is likely off the main street and into the residential areas. Thankfully, there are no meters. Alcohol selection is better than most especially for a dive bar, and they have a good beer selection(tap and bottle) as well. Highly recommend checking it out! Took my mom and a friend here on Halloween. I had been warned that an employee named Raven was very rude and to avoid the nights she was there but I took a chance since it was Halloween. We hadn't even been there 30 minutes when she started yelling at me and my friend about clinking our glasses. Her attitude started an argument where she then took our drinks away that were still half full after we had paid for them. Then kicked us out screaming at us the whole time. The fact that this place employs such a person and so many people know of her attitude just makes me realize that this is not the bar for me. I go mainly on Tuesdays because of their deal they have from 6pm to 10pm, they flip a coin, if it comes up tails your drink is regular price, if it comes up heads you get your drink for a quarter. so either regular price or a quarter, no downside! the bartenders are cool, one of them is a hot chick with tats, two dudes that me and my friends have gotten cool with Its usually a chill bar randomly gets packed. there's two pool tables and a shuffle board table which becomes fun when drunk lol. also lots of tvs either showing sports, or cartoons which is pretty funny getting drunk while power puff girls, robot chicken, and football is playing at the same time. There's also a Kinect set up so you can bowl, or do the other sports games. I have tried downtown and in Hillcrest; No other place has the epic crispness of their Blue Moon beer on tap! 2. Coin Toss Tuesday, I try to come regularly every other Tuesday with friends. I took all my siblings there and they had fun with the coin toss. It adds a little excitement of gambling with no consequence...well if you keep winning you keep drinking...and drinking....and drinking :P 3. Full bar! If they don't know the drink they'll look it up/ask you how to make it. My friends are very picky with the drinks and they all love it. 4. Reasonably priced and very affordable. 5. Totally dive bar which is the best kind of bar! Casual and no need to dress to impress, beachy atmosphere. The IB area doesn't have a lot to offer but Salty Frog's for sure blows Scoreboard and other bars out of the water. The bartenders are all chill, the female bartenders are nice and helpful and the one male bartender that was there tonight was sweet and helpful(and cute), anyone know his name? Hey, when it comes to Imperial Beach, CA, you don't have many options in... many things, however, for some reason, this town is a breeding ground for dive bars and shady spots. THATS not a bad thing! Unless you're a graduate from Mar Vista High School and looking to escape any memory of your past - then, of course, its an awful truth to know that all the bars of Imperial Beach are second homes to 53% of Mar Vista Gradates and 47% of their teachers. I am not judging, on yelp (irony), I hardly frequent the local bars of my home town, but I wish I did. Too often are they small quiet gathering spots to meet your friends and have a laugh. Salty Frog is not the epitome of dives in IB, but in terms of being available, it's there. GOOD: A pleasant variety of beers that you can purchase in pitcher form. From urine colored mega-brews to slightly darker colored smaller-batched brews - like Kona Fire Rock. BAD: A trough in the men's bathroom makes me feel like the days I partied out in Tijuana.
