Otherwise takeout is an option. Or ferry food once aboard. Note that the cafeteria on the ferry heading to Sultry Bay is very minimal. Loading was efficient though the loading staff directed us to a narrow upper deck that was difficult to exit the vehicle or navigate the slender corridor between the railing and cars and mirrors sticking out. I left my walker behind. I have a handicap sticker clearly displayed on the rear view mirror so it seems the loading person doesn't take a handicapped sticker into consideration. I'm sure there are older folks not handicapped significantly that would also need to avoid the narrow ramped parking "shelf". Next time I'll let the gate person know of my need to access the elevator. Still, I'm not sure why he put us up that narrow deck when it's an suv regardless of a handicapped driver but direct the small sedans to the main decks. Then again everyone is practically driving an SUV these days. So, communication is key. Anyway you don't pay if going to Salrty Bay which I guess is local knowledge but the gate staff said nothing. Seems BC Ferry Staff give you as little info as possible and signage is typically poor in these smaller terminals. There is a small foot passenger booth/waiting area, probably appreciated in the winter. The views are scenic and the trip is of a moderate in length. I'm sure there are older ferry staff try their best.

This ferry terminal is the smallest one I've ever seen without a booth or lanes since so few people use it. It almost sneaks up on you when you hit the end of the highway.

I had the traditional breakfast with bacon, potatoes, toast and salsa. My eggs were over medium. My husband had the traditional breakfast with ham, croissant roll and his eggs were over easy. I also ordered a pot of tea and asked if I could have a refill pot of hot water after I finished this one. The answer was yes. There are many places to see on the ferry and my next choice was the gift store. Every gift store is different. This ship didn't have the British Columbia section of books for sale, but they had nice looking clothes for men and women. I took my reading selection and finished my time next to my hubby with my cup of unfinished tea. Next trip I will provide photos.

It's pretty hard to tell which direction the ferry is going next though unless you're very familiar with the routes, so make sure you ask the driver just in case. I find that the ones I've interacted with all ask you where you're going before letting you on, so at least I haven't taken the wrong boat yet. They have a zone system for ticketing and at first it was a bit confusing for which zone ticket was needed to go where. But they have nice maps at each stop so it wasn't too hard to decipher after awhile. The boat drivers were also pretty nice and were happy to answer questions about tickets. I took the boats during the Big Picnic event at David Lam park. There were other people on the boat but it was not crowded at all. Boats also came all the time and so we didn't have to wait much before ours came. The boat doors were left open when I rode the boats and so it was really nice to be able to take pictures and videos without obstruction from the windows or clear screens. The creek is relatively calm most of the time and the rides are short, so most people probably won't get sea sick.

The best part is you can just leave your car parked in that lane and walk to nearby terminal building to use restroom or eat or shop. The one in Nanaimo had decent food options. There is also a small play structure outside that kept the kid busy. The restrooms were clean. It was 10/10 experience from embarking to disembarking. BC ferry itself offered clean restrooms, cafe to eat and a small play area. They also gave crayons and a picture for coloring. The most positive experience with the way it is operated. I spent for $12 for round trip and before you get on the ferry, the clerk takes away it from your hand. However in the same room, there were passengers for Langdale. And when two fleets arrived, we were devided for two group by clerk's yelling. No digital signage. Our group for Bowen Island needed to go down stairs to get in. I just wished they had better way to sort passengers. No nead to yell, right? I understood later, due to fleet size, our foot passenger had to go in like cars. The fleet was clean enough. There is cafeteria, snack and drink vending machines for 20 min ride.
