Funny story. I had been going to Dr. McMullen for a while when I saw my Arizona friend at the San Diego airport. She mentioned she had an eye appt with her own doctor. I mentioned that my eye doctor was amazing and joked that mine was better than hers. She joked back that HER eye doctor was amazing and that hers was better than mine. After researching many offices - I was looking for a long standing reputable optometrist that is very experienced. I am newly blind in my right eye from a NAAION event in December. I chose Dr. McMullen and made an appointment specifically with him. Here are the facts: 1. I arrived 15 minutes early as requested and processed my paperwork and insurance 2. Led to the room where I waited 45 minutes for the doctor. 3. It was not Dr. McMullen who I researched that came in. I asked to see Dr. McMullen and was told he is with another patient. The other doctor convinced me to start the exam and Dr. McMullen will come in a few minutes. That did not happen. The exam was over, and he handed me the prescription. I was told I would have to wait 2 additional hours to see him as he was with other patients. 4. Got my PD from the glasses helper and questioned why it would go from 58 for last 10 years to 62. Was told "it just happens". 5. The next day I went to order glasses and noticed there was a completely different prescription in my 'blind' eye. Called and was told it was a 'balance lens'. Um...balance lens would be the SAME not different. 6. Was told that the doctor does not take phone calls!! Absolutely absurd that I needed to make another appointment to ask questions about my prescription that was obviously wrong. 7. Office manager "asked/begged" (her words exactly) to make an exception. I provided the entire next day as being available. The doctor called me the same day. I could not get him on the phone ever again. 8. They sent over a completely new prescription without talking to me. Just took an eraser and removed the sphere and axis on my blind eye. 9. They called me 8 weeks later wanting my insurance information again, even though they took a photocopy at check in. 10. I explained that I filled the 2nd prescription with 2 pairs of glasses and my vision is worse with them on. I will need to get another eye exam and new lens for the glasses I just ordered. 11. I will not be submitting my insurance information to them, nor will I be paying this bill. 12. The office manager Fran was extremely curt, rude and raised her voice to me multiple times and tried to talk over me just laying out the facts. 13. This was not just a bad day - this is multiple phone calls and interactions with the staff ZERO STARS!!! read more

All of the employees are helpful, makes one feel welcome. Treat you like you are their only client. Fran is wonderful and know what she is doing. Gives each client individualized time. I got new insurance so needed to find a new eye doctor. I liked that this office had a lot of reviews and was conveniently located, so I texted their number to set up an appointment. I appreciated how easy it was to do that and I was able to schedule a checkup within a week and a half. I filled out my new patient paperwork ahead of time and when I arrived, I had to do a little more. I was called back promptly by the tech who did my initial eye tests. Dr McMullen was great and answered all my questions and addressed my concerns. He has a professional yet welcoming demeanor and I felt comfortable speaking with him. I got some trial contacts which so far have been working well, as well as some eye drops for contacts. Staff was helpful and friendly as well. Other places allow you to have your eye prescription on their patient portal. Three times, I have call to request my reader/ computer prescription and they alway say the have sent it. And every time I go to the patient portal for my eye prescription, it's always the progressive prescription with NO add to show my reader strength. Don't waste your time here. Oh! And they charge a $60 fee for another eye doctor to verify prescription. Never again! read more

I had seen Dr. Madara in the past at Salt River and was extremely pleased. This time I was examined by Dr. McMullen. It was just as excellent of an experience with Dr. McMullen as it was with Dr. Madara. I get an annual eye scan at Salt River which shows issues you may have with your eyes, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration. The results are thoroughly discussed and explained to you. Dr. McMullen has an excellent personality and did a great job answering all of my questions. And, Felix helped me find a great frame for some new sunglasses and explained what type of lens I should get. Originally, I love this place. The optometrist did an excellent job. I also used to think the customer service was great. However, my opinon changed due to their error and follow up. My warning is if you are getting eye Care at the end of the year ... Make sure they process your insurance before the New Year. They waited for me and due to this I lost a year of insurance that I paid for. I requested a manager call me and never received a call back. Due the lack of care and communication I asked to be taken off of their client list. Sadly, this has changed mine and my family's opinion and we will not be returning. read more

Made an appointment with Dr. McMullen based on glowing reviews. Appointment was two weeks out. When I arrived I was told oh, Dr. McMullen is not in today so you will be seeing another dr. Wish I had walked out. Other female dr was fine and very thorough but female optician lacked professionalism. Instead of seating me and marking on the glasses she stood in front of me, and when I picked glasses up she just handed them to me. Did not seat and make sure they were right. Seemed too busy and no attention to detail. Overall experience was like an assembly line and highly disappointed. Tried for weeks to wear glasses but are not right - To use them I have to tilt my head way back and get neck pain. They are in the drawer where they will sit til next year. read more

It's a good thing that I'm blind 1/2 of the appointment without my contacts so that I don't start drooling. Just kidding. Kind of. In all seriousness, he's very comprehensive and thorough. He will go through your supplements that you list on your questionnaire and impart his knowledge. He is brilliant - no matter where the conversation goes he can draw it back to a fundamental scientific study. It's refreshing to have a doctor so excited about life and health. Outstanding experience from the moment I walk into the beautiful sunny office. I was greeted by the front desk staff, with big genuine smiles. Not long before I was taken back by Laura to be pre tested who explained each test thoroughly before performing it. She was only too happy to answer my questions. Then I saw Dr. Madera and before each test she explained what she was doing every single step of the way and then after the exam she wanted to make sure I saw the images of my eyes on the optomap which shows color photos of everything behind your eye. Truly an educational exerience. Off to see Felix for my glasses. He went through all the pricing with me and explained how a certain anti glare would be even more beneficial to me because I am on the computer a lot. It was a pleasure to purchase such a great pair of glasses from such a friendly staff member. I was told my glasses would be in about ten days. Well it only took four! I had a piece of metal that was lodged in my eye and couldn't get it out no matter how much I flushed it with water.
