Salt & Straw is such an ice cream institution. Every time we are near one- we almost always stop. This holiday season they did not disappoint. The pineapple upside down cake ice cream was truly incredible. How do they come up with this stuff?? I love that they let you sample unlimited flavors and are so nice about it- even encouraging. When you have so many funky flavors, I guess that's the best policy. They also have a new Taco Bell collab item called The Tacolate. It's like a choco taco but better. The sauces it comes with are crazy good. I loved the spicy one. Heads up- there aren't really any tables at Salt & Straw, so be prepared to walk with your ice cream or take it somewhere else to eat. Love this location! Located within the fountains it's a great spot to grab a cone & walk around. I do wish the location was a little larger & hard more seating. On weekends it can be difficult to find a table inside or outside. We love sampling all the fun seasonal flavors & appreciate the friendliness of the staff here. I was told to come here many times by family and friends. I went to this location when I was with my husband because we were in the area and wanted a sweet treat. The line was out the door! You know a place is GREAT when the line is like that. I LOVE that there was an employee at the door managing the customers and their entrance. She was sweet and asked each party how many people there were and let people in accordingly. This whole process went smoothly and was quick. After a late afternoon of Top Golf, I decided to treat my family and I to some dessert at Salt & Straw for the first time. I'm more familiar with the Salt & Strae location in the I've Blocks are of downtown Sacramento. But for one reason of another (mainly due to how busy they are), I found myself visiting the Roseville location vs my local Sacramento one. As I drove by looking for parking I could tell this location was pretty popular as well, but after arriving I realized Salt & Strae is setup to assist several people at once. The menu at first plance looks very different than your average ice cream spot, with unique Limited Edition flavors like: Apple & Cheedar Donuts, or Caramel Apple Shebert, or Classic Flavors: Honey Lavender, Pear & Blue Cheese, or even more with their "Last Chance" flavors like Goat Cheese Marionberry Habanero. Salt & Straw has to have the oddest flavors of ice cream that I've even heard of, and for that reason my son and I had to try their Last Chance, Goat Cheese Marionberry Habanero flavor. I could tell the difference in texture with the Goat Cheese, and the Marionberry Habanero combination provided both a sweet and slightly spicy combination. We both however chose from their simpler flavors to enjoy. Sampled: Goat Cheese Marionberry Habanero Ordered: Chocolate gooey brownie (single, cup) Double fold Vanilla (double, cup) Hazelnut Cookies & Cream (single, cup) Sea Salt w/Caramel Ribbons (single, cone) I ordered the Chocolate Gooey Brownie flavor which was really good. This is not your regular old ice cream shop. Salt & Straw is a whirlwind experience for your tastebuds! The flavors are like no other...so many combinations you never knew you needed to taste! The flavors we chose were the great candycopia and jack o lantern pumpkin bread...both were amazing! But what set this visit apart was the service. Ryan served us so well...he was friendly, helpful, and he didn't just pass us our samples, he explained what was in each flavor and gave us great recommendations. You could tell he really cared, and that's pretty rare these days. That's also what made our visit so delightful. We will definitely be back! Came here on a Sunday night for a friends birthday around 8pm. There was a small line, but the line moved by fast. I've been to several Salt & Straw locations and this one was no different, the service was good, the servers offered as many samples as I want to ensure I pick out the right flavor and of course they gave me a generous serving of ice cream. I always get a waffle cone with a single split scoop. Like other Salt & Straws location they don't have any seating inside but being in a plaza with many shops, this is the perfect spot to grab ice cream and walk around! We first came to this shop when it was new to the area. It has maintained its status as a delightful place to get a quality ice cream indulgence. It is roomy & clean with no indoor seating, though there is seating outside the store & around the shopping center. There is a display of merchandise to browse. A freezer holds prepackaged items. Staff has been polite, friendly, & pleasant. You are welcomed to try out flavors. Samples are given on small metal spoons with receptacles to return them located below the counter in labeled slots. You will find a variety of unique, interesting, gourmet flavor options on their Classic & changing Limited Edition menus, with vegan options. No matter how unusual the flavor combos sound, be adventurous with sampling & I think you'll find your palate pleasantly surprised. We've been amazed at what we've enjoyed, like some of the spicy & savory choices. Coffee & Love Nuts is my classic fave. I normally get their sea salt with caramel ribbons but tonight I tried the new Marion berry goat cheese habanero and I really liked it! It had a nice Marion berry flavor with a little hint of habanero. Super delicious. My husband had chocolate chili peanut butter and it was also delicious! Ok. I really loved the place the first time my wife brought it home. Chocolate gooey brownie is perfection. So we decided to take all the kids here and they were sampling things... I don't typically sample things once I know what I like. However, the kids were sampling and because it was the Halloween season, they had a selection of Halloween flavors including one called "Creepy Crawly Critters" and my son tried it, handed it to me, I tried it and it didn't taste good at all. In fact, it tasted a bit foul. But, you can't please all pallets and I thought it was a marketing gimmick to attract kids. We get our ice cream and sit outside. It was a beautiful day and I still had this aftertaste that was not pleasant. That was when my daughter read the window flyer that had all of the flavors and with the specific Halloween flavors, the contents.... Now that I ate crickets and mealy worms I don't know how I feel about it all. First, we live in California where there are signs everywhere warning people of hazards which include signs next to pools that alert people that death by drowning is possible. I mean, they even had a "V" next to the vegan options. But the flavor that had bugs? Not even a warning from the attendant. Nope- nothing. Full send. Immediately I thought, "wow, what a complete miss. It tastes foul, and even a bit rancid." It made ice cream kinda gross and keep in mind, I had no idea it had bugs in it yet. The taste lingered, and lingered and lingered. As I was sharing my scoop of chocolate gooey brownie with my wife, my daughter busted up laughing and said to my son, you sampled the one crickets and mealy worms!!! Which meant I also sampled it. Over all the ice cream here is kinda hit and miss. I have had other flavors that do not have bugs in it and find they tend to miss the mark on many of them but on some they nail it. For instance, the vegan peanut butter is killer. The salted caramel is too salty. Leaving out my experience of the bugs, I would say 3 stars mostly because of consistency. Having said that, the base of the ice cream is well done meaning it is creamy, and doesn't lack for quality. The service is solid but again, I think it would be nice if they explained the contents of the more exotic flavors. Kinda like a wine tasting. The servers provided samples quickly and they use metal spoons that make sampling much better. Finally they provide a good size scoop of ice cream for the price. Four stars. The ambiance is a bit lacking. There is an out of place retail spot and no tables or benches inside to sit. The flow of people makes it awkward to accomplish this so enjoying anything inside would be difficult. Plus, the flow itself lends to backed up lines quickly if people sample the items. Stars- 3 Would I be back? Yes, but mostly because of the flavor I love. It is wonderful. If that were to be rotated out, I would probably pass by. I do know that many people love the place and I can see the appeal. The ice cream itself as a base is excellent. There just seems to be some quirky elements that didn't land with me. I would, given the above, score this a solid three. However, I am going to give it the benefit of the doubt and provide an additional star- why? Well, any ice cream store crazy enough to serve bugs in their ice cream is part of the group of people crazy enough to change the world. That deserves praise and reward!! read more

Finally made it in to Salt & Straw today. We were greeted right away and the girl who helped us was friendly and answered all our questions. My daughter decided to get a kids scoop of Double Folded Vanilla with Sprinkles. The kids scoop was a lot bigger than expected and my little didn't leave even drop in the cup! I ordered a split scoop of Salted, Malted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Coffee & Love Nuts. Both flavors were delish! It was a party in my mouth!
