Wow! What a unexpected great and different experience I had at this Salon Paul Florent! I had heard about this place... I had heard that I could get beautiful hair color and highlights along with a great cut for a reasonable price. So I thought I would give it a shot. I walked in the door.. and first thought well this place is different... very cozy and very adult. There were "adult" Barbie photography shots framed on the wall. 2 adorable dogs were the greeters. All kinds of interesting kick knacks placed all over the place, even in the ceiling. Edgy and Interesting! There were only 2 stylists there... but they made me feel right at home immediately. They offered me wine, beer or a shot of tequila... Ok... I instantly love this place already! There is even a stripper pole in the middle of the room. I wonder if anyone ever dances on that pole? I had my hair colored and highlighted. The colorist did an amazing job. It turned out so natural looking...and the color hasn't faded really at all. I love it! The cut is so well done... What can I say about this place.... This place is such a hidden gem! I went to a salon yesterday to get my ombre lightened up and retouched, but boy was that a disaster! They went super light on my roots that it didn't even look like an ombre anymore, and they toned it waaaay too much that it looked green/blue in flash photography -_- Needless to say, it was horrible. So after that dreadful experience I yelped a salon, and being super impressed with their reviews and being Paul Mitchell based since I love his products, I called Salon Paul Florent to make an appt with them. When I arrived, I was greeted by 2 furry friends and found out that this place is pet friendly... thats a plus! Then I met Connie, who was going to fix my ombre and I told her exactly what I wanted. While waiting for my hair to process, Paul offered me coffee, wine, beer, and SHOTS! Hell ya I'll take some shots! Then after about 2 hours or so my hair was amaaazing. Connie is a hair color wizard.... my hair finally looked warmer, no more of that greenish bluish undertones....and since I was a first time customer I got 20% off my total purchase. Overall, great experience.... Paul and Connie really treat you like family and they are very talented professionals who love what they do.... oh and there's a stripper pole in the middle of the salon lol! He listened to what I wanted and took his time making sure everything was perfect. WHAT?! Picture the day before you big 35th birthday celebration. I go into the salon and Paul is wrapping up with another customer. I show him a picture of what my haircut was inspired by and tell him that I just want to trim and clean it up a bit and maybe fix the back that sticks up when it hits the bag of a chair. He says cool and proceeds to wash my hair. Pause here. I am an African American woman. For those of you that don't know about African American women with relaxed hair - when you wash it, the texture may change. My hair gets very wavy/curly. Paul proceeds to stop hacking away at my hair and it doesn't look like he cut that much because it is curly at this point. Once he straightens my hair it is hacked to all bloody hell. Sticking up everywhere. He puts some oil in my hair. It did not look good. I could feel my eyes starting to tear up and he asked me what I thought and I told him that I thought he cut too much and he replied "I barely cut anything" that's because he cut my hair wet and curly and I wear it straight. Thinking he may..... I don't know.... A. Offer me a discount B. Apologize C. Offer me a future service for free or at a discount or....... D. None of the above - he simply walked away and Connie, his wife charged me for my haircut. Neither of them saying anything about the fact that I'm standing there crying over my haircut. I'm sure you can see that I did not have a good experience. I'm no professional, but I feel like cutting someone's hair curly when they wear it straight is an rookie error. My horrible experience was only heightened by the unprofessional way that it was handled after it was over. Neither of them even looking me in the eye or anything. read more

OK, I have been debating writing this because I don't want to give the horrible review I am about to give but I feel the need to prevent someone else from making my same mistake. Was referred by a friend who had an awesome hair cut from Paul. Decided to go at the start of the summer right before a trip to Europe. Worst. Decision. Ever. He did NOT listen to what I wanted AT ALL. I said long layers and he gave me a mullet! The top layer was only 2 inches long! And the long layer past my boobs! Looked totally ridiculous. I cried in the chair before I even left the place!! He said I would love him in 2 weeks. I spent the whole summer hating it and it is STILL growing out. Every hairstylist I have been to since has asked me "who in the hell cut your hair? You poor thing!" Yeah. Save yourself the tears people. If you like pretty hair, don't go here. I've been trying to get an appointment here for months and they are packed (always a good sign!) so I haven't been able to find a time that works with my schedule. I have been going to Salon PF for about 3 years now. Usually by now I have already changed hair dressers a few times, but I trust Paul and Connie to the enth degree. I have tried different colors, because of something I've seen somewhere. They listen to me when I say I want this color or that and they do it, but a month or two later I'm in and saying you pick it and they're always dead on. Of course when I trust them to pick the colors, I get complements galore from friends and co-workers. (Connie is the genius behind the color.) Watching Connie do highlights is like watching an artist at work. Paul has the patience of a saint. The same story as above but talking about cuts instead of color. He knows I can't style it well myself. So now I know to just trust him. After he cuts it he'll blow dry it etc. explaining to me how to get the same results. Then maybe every 6 months or so, he'll suggest we change the cut. I always leave it in his hands ...now. The salon itself is pretty cool. It is dog friendly, music is always on, a beer or coffee or a glass of wine is always available, It is so relaxing, nothing pretensious about it like some salons on Ventura. My first time at Paul Florent cost me $35 with the first time client discount. I was so happy with my cut and style! I have to admit I was a little startled when I first walked in with the Tim Burton-esque decor, but I quickly got over that when I was offered a drink: beer, wine, or tequila. I was looking for a place that didn't give off that faux-hollywood hype so many salons try to convey, but at the same time the skill and service level had to be super high caliber. I've now been back 4x and going back soon... I always get compliments on my hair, the color, the cut - all thanks to both Paul and Connie. They both have crazy good skills and they really listen. The salon itself is so original and authentic. I love the black paint, chandeliers, strings of light and canvases placed in the ceiling rafters (genius idea for when you're getting your hair washed).
