Queens, NY (Flushing, NY) - I popped in here as we were having lunch next door at You Garden and my…read morekiddo needed a haircut. $10 (!) for a boy's cut that puts to shame every $40+ "kids salon" experience I've had in the NY/NJ metro area. The place is totally no frills - no cute decor, race car chairs, or streaming entertainment - but they did a way better and more professional job than the fancier places. We were going from shaggy to short and for some reason the stylists at the kid salons always had trouble with this transition. But the barber/stylist here clipped my son's hair with sure-handed confidence and efficiency. Found my new hack: Flushing food crawl, roast duck, and a $10 haircut (men's). Delicious, effective, well groomed.

The first time my bf came for a haircut, the owner charged us $10. Second time.. my bf and I (i…read morehave waist length hair) came for a cut, before tips, our total was $50. So basically $10 for his and $40 for mine.. We were totally taken by surprise as their sign said $8 and up so we thought it would've just been $25-30 max for mine even with hair washing, cut, blow dry. I like my hair thick and should've specified this but I showed the guy a picture of someone with long layers and he said he got it. However, he thinned out my ends (which I actually hate** as I have and love thick hair...). But once it's done, what can I do, right? It'll grow back by summer.. The guy did spend 40 min cutting, blow drying, flat ironing my hair and I think they triple washed my hair. However, I think if you really want the cut you requested to come out right, you have got to be super specific or they might assume you want to thin out your hair.. As we were caught off guard by the total, we tipped just 20% and made it a total of $60. On the fence about whether or not we'll return or look elsewhere..

I gave this salon a second chance because my first visit was about 70% of the way there. The first…read morevisit, it was still too dark and the line of demarcation was visible, but it was close enough that I thought with a little feedback we'd get to the result I wanted. Instead, the second visit was worse. I brought reference photos and clearly explained that I wanted the color lighter and warmer. Instead, I left with an even darker, splotchy gloss and the same visible line of demarcation. When I pointed this that the color was not what I requested, I was repeatedly told it "looked good" and would fade instead of fixing it while I was still in the chair. Throughout the appointment I kept hearing about how busy the stylist was and that she had no idea how I'd been squeezed into the schedule. As a paying client who booked in advance, I shouldn't feel like an inconvenience. During my first visit I explained I was recovering from a concussion. Before this appointment, I explained I'd recently been in the ER because of neck issues and couldn't comfortably lean back at the shampoo bowl. I said I didn't mind getting a little wet if it helped. Instead, the back of my dress was completely soaked. The stylist joked that she'd "never gotten anyone this wet before," said she'd dry it, then walked away within seconds and left me sitting there soaked. The stylist also didn't bother drying enough of my hair to properly check the final color before I left. The atmosphere was equally strange. One stylist greeted me with a hug when I walked in despite only having met me once before. It all felt overly familiar and performative rather than client-focused. Why hug me? We aren't friends, and frankly - I don't like you. I don't mind paying premium NYC salon prices. What I expect in return is technical skill, attention to detail, and someone who listens to what I'm asking for. Instead, I felt like the salon projected confidence while missing very basic fundamentals. Listening to the client, executing the service properly, and checking the finished result shouldn't be optional. I'm genuinely not sure why so many NYC salons cultivate this kind of self-important atmosphere. It doesn't feel client-focused, it feels like you're expected to trust the stylist unquestioningly, even when the technical execution falls short. I'm not looking for a refund. I'm sharing this so other clients know what my experience was before they book. I won't be following up with any outreach or response.
